PleasureKevin posted:Stephen elope the dude who convinced Microsoft to buy Nokia is now leaving ms lol he didnt convince ms to buy nokia. this is basically what happened: - dude quits ms and becomes ceo of nokia - dumps basically everything nokia has been working on (including their symbian followup, meego) in favor of nokia using windows phone - nokia marketshare and stock mysteriously plummet - ms buys nokia, elop joins ms again and gets a crazy bonus & similar position to the one he had before he left

like meego wasnt going to crash horribly anyway 3 years late with no unique features and developed by a hardware company with no previous experience writing real software? if only they had kept going they could be as successful as blackberry

in like 2010 someone who used to work at nokia wrote a big long blogpost at how busted their software development was, they had a full team of product, design and devs for each handset and no mandate to align them at all [and this is when they had 30+ models going at a time]

the standard kalleboo/mroach lament was that all these defunct euro dumphone vendors made like one decent phone with good features but spread it out among a dozen kinda poo poo phones the reason iPhone was the first good phone wasn't because it had all the features, but because it had most of them and there's not some ridiculous matrix of which model comes with which

the sad part is they knew where they needed to go and just hosed up royally like the official line was that "we don't make phones, we make multimedia computers that are connected to the Internet and happen to make phone calls", and they were saying this in 2005

does anyone have that thing where the board changed elops contract to give him a big bonus if nokia was bought out for a premium above the open share price? and then he tanked the share price so that microsoft could swoop in. and he got his sick bonus, and it was somehow a big surprise to everybody???
