Ah! That's actually their second game, but found Last Scenario right next to it. Thanks!

i know exit fate wasn't the one you were specifically looking for, but it's better, so if you're only going to play one goon made rpg maker jrpg throwback make it exit fate

I think last scenario's writing is way tighter

i never actually got super far into it, so maybe it is. this is a very rare occasion, but perhaps in this situation, you can ignore my opinion

It's too bad that guy disappeared, in today's world he probably could have been making some money with new RPGs on Steam.

well he would need to not reuse the poo poo out of other game's music and tilesets, but otherwise yes, i would buy his games on steam

That reminds me of Terra Incognita, which also blatantly traced its sprites from Suikoden http://store.steampowered.com/app/347560/

I'm actually amazed at the success VNs have had on Steam. CYOAs as well. My wildest dream is to see translations of some obscure NEC PC era games in a GOG style effort. There's a bunch of non-porny ones I can recommend like J.E.S.U.S. and Metal Eye 2. I mean, recommend as in "they have pretty pictures" you don't know what's going on unless you read Japanese.

Wendell posted:That reminds me of Terra Incognita, which also blatantly traced its sprites from Suikoden http://store.steampowered.com/app/347560/ That happens an awful lot with Suikoden assets. One guy (maybe the Terra Incognita guy?) even claimed he "bought" the sprites directly from Konami.

i knew a guy in high school who claimed he was internet best friends with the composer for symphony of the night and that's why he could use the music from that game in his crappy rpgmaker project

Trails in the Sky has been cool so far but I'm in the last dungeon full of identical looking hallways and every chest that has something interesting in it is also full of monsters that take ages to kill and I'm really ready for it to be over soon.

the last dungeon is butt, and you should use a map and only fight the monster chests

I didn't have the override in place when I played it myself but my current TitS installation has this version of that music from the Zanmai CD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvTsPjCgFXY

al-azad posted:I'm actually amazed at the success VNs have had on Steam. CYOAs as well. It's kind of funny because this already exists in a way--Project EGG in Japan is basically Japanese GOG with all those games ported to Windows. I can't see why someone enterprising enough couldn't strike a deal with them and translate some of them. Actually IIRC there's some European company that did exactly that, though the selection was pretty small. There are some real gems from the PC-98 era in all sorts of genres. The early Falcom RPGs like Xanadu, while simple, are still really good. Hell, IIRC Xanadu is entirely in English anyway, you could just straight port it. The Record of Lodoss War RPGs were also really good too, with a mix of overworld/first person dungeons and the option to do battles in traditional JRPG fashion or a top-down tactical manner. Also the PC-98 version of Inindo is amazing--we did get that one, but it was the SNES port which was awful. Kind of a shame that when the NEC PC platform collapsed it took the entire non-porn Japanese PC gaming industry down with it, there was some good stuff there.

It's worse on Hard and Nightmare, where the enemies physical resistances and speed are jacked up so magic and S-Crafts are the only really effective thing. On Nightmare, I just skipped fighting anything after the halfway mark (because I carried over levels and gear and so didn't need anything). I like the concept of the dungeon, it's an interesting change and the music is fantastic, but yeah it just drags on so long. and there are like 16 monster chests. But persevere, because some of the most incredible stuff happens once you reach/pass the end. Amppelix posted:I stopped playing Trails at the final dungeon like a year ago Yes, absolutely.

Got the final phase of the last boss down to only needing two more hits to finish him then he wiped me out in one attack so I'm taking a break.

I'm finally playing Lightning Returns and have a question: can I ignore this perfect timing mechanic? For whatever reason I am not really able to trigger it reliably except on guards.

Yes. You can just hold down the attack buttons and you'll pretty much be fine. Guarding on time is more important, because some enemies get staggered from parrying, but the only benefit from timed attacks is some extra damage. e: eventually you can build a schemata with enough defense to block through anything regardless, and with proper use of debuffs you can stagger everything pretty easily corn in the bible fucked around with this message at 06:29 on Jun 21, 2015 |

You can ignore perfect timing on attacks without trouble. You need it for guarding but that's about it.

The most important thing the game never tells you is that any time you kill a boss (a monster counts as a boss if the game gives you a star rating for the fight) be sure to check the ground for your reward. main quest bosses give you weapons and side bosses usually give you accessories, but if you don't pick them up manually you can miss them.

i like breath of fire iv, but the psx era rpg of it annoys me. you never really just do anything, any goal you have will multiple inconsequential roadblocks requiring two+ dungeons and a minigame.

BoF2 is awful just because you have to use field abilities of your party members to progress, and you can't switch the party anywhere but the infrequent save statues.

And god loving help you if you haven't been keeping Sten leveled up, because there's a stretch of game that assumes you have. It locks you into a few rooms and only gives you a basement of critters to grind on if you haven't.

God Phantasy Star III is a mess. I'm up to Sean's generation right now, but the flaws are obvious. The gameplay seems to be about endless fetch quests. Ayn's generation is a particular offender; you have to collect jewels, one of which appears to be completely pointless until you meet the NPC that wants it at the end of the generation. The game pads out time by making you do the same dungeons over and over with the occasional monster change. Going through generic techno dungeon #4 is fine the first time around, but when I have to go through them over and over to go to different worlds, then it gets very obnoxious and it's obvious you're just wasting my time. Combat is busted. The only techniques that aren't useless are the healing ones and maybe the attack-boosting ones, so combat boils down to everyone attacking, then having your healers cast Gires when your team's HP is low after a few fights or in-battle during a boss. The only hard part of the game and combat is grinding for the money needed to get the latest weapons. The characters are somehow even more lifeless than the PS2 ones. The only characterization in the game so far...is for Sari, the amazon girl in Ayn's generation, and that was removed in the translation for some reason, and Rhys at the start. There is zero reason to care about anyone, from your MC to the characters you can marry. You could replace the entire cast with clones of the Dragon Quest 1 dude and nothing would change. What's sad is that the character designer has fun personalities for the characters in the unofficial character book she released many moons ago. One character's bio in the book has more personality than all of the characters in the game do combined. Having things like Rhys and Lyle constantly be at each other's throats, even if you marry Maia, Mieu doing fortunetelling about the MC's future wife when the generation starts to wind down, Lena being a Rappy farmer, and Sari and Thea building a friendly relationship would seriously make the game a lot better and make you give a drat about what's going on. Despite this, I...kinda like it so far. It has a weird, enjoyable charm for some reason.

I'm bitter that in the first game there's no separate ending for when you take the mcguffin gloves and immediately leave the island with them.

Ahaha thanks for posting this, I love it when people involved in a game's development make dorky fan-oriented stuff like this. I feel like I was a little too harsh on PS3 back when I LPed it; it's kind of a poor sequel, what with being completely different from the previous two games in everything from setting to visual design (and in hindsight it especially suffers in comparison to PS4, which plays a lot better and was jam-packed with callbacks to the first two games), but on its own merits it's at least a playable RPG with some interesting ideas.

PSIII is probably the one game in the series that would benefit the most from a remake. There's an amazing concept buried in there somewhere, but the actual game design completely lets it down and there's barely any narrative whatsoever to back it up. Maybe it was an ambition vs. grasp problem and a better team could've pulled it off, even in 1990 on a relatively young Sega Genesis, but something about that game felt like they made the attempt five or ten years too early. Hats off to them for trying though.
