my big issue with 40k (even if you practice it in a cool way and avoid the cost issues) is the lack of modularity in the models you collect the troops and vehicles and monsters tend to have a bunch of different options in terms of how you can kit them out (with some vehicles having dozens of variants and loadouts) but they don't make it easy to swap parts out, unlike with, say, a lot of Gundam stuff. so if you want to switch from having a laser-tank to having a flamethrower-tank, it's not as simple as just saying "well, I'll take the laser out and put a flamethrower in", you have to either buy and paint a different model or risk damage by detaching glued-in parts.
