For those of us not going to buy a brand new video card over this, ATI is just going to miss out on hotdog intestines and splatoon gore right?

I'm not expecting the KF2 devs to gently caress things up to the point where the game is basically unplayable if you are using Brand X. So things should be fine unless you can't sleep without watching innards do a slinky impression.

AMD was the king of hashcat until recently; might still be if you can't afford a Titan X.

Funny thing is I had an 8800GTX back in 2007 and switched to AMD when Nvidia's new drivers broke textures in goddamn Vampire: Bloodlines. Now that DX12 is going to eat Mantle's lunch I might switch back but my R290X is still doing great.

Hey Questioner and assorted TW staff, I deeply implore you to add, if you haven't, a penetration mechanic to the Demo class weapons. Be it perk based dependent or always on, I would adore you if you could do this. What I want to see is RPG's and 40mm's penetrate fleshier, softer targets before detonating, unless using contact munitions. An RPG 16 rocket could travel through several clots before going up, a 40 could probably penetrate two within minimum arming range. Also if I saw a grenade explode inside the gut of a Bloat I'd be delighted. The reasoning for this is all there realistically, and I believe it would be very fun. Oftentimes grenade and rocket based classes in video games can be a bit annoying if all their ammunition is contact based, dudding harmlessly within minimum distance. Another thing you could easily do is having different types of grenades and rockets. Use "switch fire mode" to cycle to a different kind, reload weapon to load it. They could even draw from the same ammo pool if you don't care about complete realism, I don't think anybody would mind. There are many different types of explosives that would make great sense in KF2. High explosive, fragmentation, incendiary (probably want to keep this for a potential firebug weapon), heat, many specialist rounds and combo shots such as HEF-I. Swarm of clots and gorefasts? Use a fragmentation grenade from the launcher. Scrake? Heat rocket to the facemask.
I support this poster's ideas but also think their purchase history should be carefully monitored.

Another unfunny, threadshitting knob-end.
Why is anyone even mildly concerned about PhysX being an option in 2015? It has always been and will always be a silly gimmick that sometimes results in neat effects (and often looks laughably out-of-place for a lot of reasons) that just acts as a bonus for people posh enough to own high-end Nvidia cards. We've known for a while that Tripwire's got some dealio with Nvidia, so hey, why not implement their silly proprietary physics thing for more goofy gibs? It's completely inconsequential to gameplay and isn't even a huge visual bump. It's neat for 900-series owners/Titan nutjobs owners, it's meaningless in every sense of the word to everyone else.

You can get a card that runs PhysX a year or more ago for a couple of hundred dollars. That is and has always been what a good price-to-performance card costs. You have never needed to spend more than that, this isn't a feature where you're spending more than anyone else who wants a machine that can play Killing Floor 2. If your Nvidia card is too lovely to run PhysX then you need to upgrade because you are probably hurting in a lot of other areas too.

I think this and Borderlands 2 are the only two games with significant PhysX that I can think of. Metro has some too. It's a cool feature because it makes the physics more monkeycheese, which is good in a game that is basically Dead Alive: The Movie: The Game.

That's pretty much what I'm reading, yeah. It's not a big deal at all, much like whenever I get around to playing Tomb Raider I'm sure the entire experience will be ruined because I can't turn on the hair effects.

Or you have the ati equivalent, which runs fine in most cases minus physx, thus they would spend more than others if they want to make the jump. I'm not sure why your reasoning ignores ati users, unless that's :thejoke:.

The same is true of FreeSync and their Shadowplay-like screen recording tech. In fact, I can't remember a proprietary AMD tech in the last few years.

Actually, physx shouldn't be that crippling to AMD cards now, maybe if you're still running on an HD4870 or 5850 you'll notice, but GCN uarch is fine with physx.

Also, Nvidia is a company of shitlords and they won't get a drat penny from me unless they start going open source. Plus every single Nvidia card I've had has died spectacularly on me :colbert:

TrueAudio, but that's because it requires hardware built into the GPU.

PhysX runs on the CPU for non-Geforce cards so what AMD card you have doesn't really have anything to do with it.

Not completely true as we've seen with Witcher 3. While AMD cards can't run PhysX since they lack CUDA acceleration. Not all PhysX depends on it. Hairworks for example is based on the tessellation throughput of the card. This allows for varying performance on AMD cards.

Edit: I'm dumb hairworks isn't PhysX. It's VisualFX.

You can however use an old nVidia card for PhysX alone, leaving your AMD one to play gaem.

E: you can also buy a dedicated $30 PhysX card, it's made for specifically for PhysX and won't do anything else

You can't use an nVidia card to accelerate PhysX if an AMD card is being used for rendering. There's a way to hack drivers to make "Hybrid PhysX" work, but good luck with that. This is probably the most bullshit and least defensible thing nVidia does, because gently caress if you paid for a compatible GPU you should be able to run PhysX!

Also note that the dedicated PhysX cards (PPU cards) pre-dated GPU PhysX and can no longer be used. You do also need a relatively current and powerful videocard to do PhysX acceleration, the practical minimum is a Geforce GTX 650 Ti or equivalent (meaning ~1.3 TFLOPS with GDDR5). While theoretically compatible, lower-end GPUs (even the GTX 650 non-Ti) don't have enough compute performance so will still bottleneck rendering. Be cautious that you can find plenty of old articles from people using lower-end cards for older games, but modern games need a lot of compute performance for PhysX. If buying a PhysX card now I'd consider a GTX 750 Ti to be the minimum, but KF2 may have higher or lower requirements than current games when finished, its never very smart to try to project performance or buy hardware for unfinished or unreleased games.

It's bullshit and indefensible to not spend hundreds of software engineer hours making drivers work for a really weird hardware workaround that almost nobody would use? What?

This was previously a thing that worked and people did until nVidia artificially locked it out in their drivers. There's no technological reason to prevent the use of PhysX acceleration on a Geforce card just because another card is being used for graphics.

I feel bad for all the videocard chat in this thread instead of pro-tier commando strats (click heads) so those of us that care can go hang out in the GPU Megathread - mean ol' NVIDIA making our AMD cards run slow :( (yes that's the actual thread title)

Tripwire lied, no zeds died.

Was kinda hoping for gunslinger since my favorite thing to do in KF1 when not commando was be a sharpshooter loaded down with pistols. Wonder if there will be any automatic pistols, like a 93R or Stechkin APS? That'd be cool.

Totally understand their "no comment on stuff til it is done" approach cause people got unjustifiably pissy when they couldn't meet deadlines, but total blackout is nearly as bad in my opinion. Though it sounds like they have even more stuff on their plate now, rather than just KF2. Forgot the name of that game they were partnering with another studio to work on, but I really don't care to look it up.

I'm really hoping they eventually balance it so that the later half of a match isn't "go Support or die". Shotguns are really fun, but when at least half of the team has to go Support to stand a chance on anything higher than Normal in the second half (unless they have very good Medics), it gets annoying.

out of a six man squad we usually have what, two supports? Sometimes three? and that gets us through Suicidal no problem. Medic, Commando, Berserker, Support, Support, Random Mystery Class of Choice.

I mean yeah right now support is the best class because it's the one that can do the most damage to groups of enemies (penetration) and to bosses (AA-12 dps) but that'll change when they add new classes. I envision a day where there are ... no supports. And that day is when I will complain about running out of ammo a lot.
