I listened to The Reaping today. You know, up til the last few minutes, I was kind of impressed. Not the tightest story ever told, but it more-or-less held together, and certainly a downer, but the emotional beats felt more-or-less natural rather than HA HA HA gently caress YOU I AM LIDSTARR DESTROYER OF LIGHT. The various attempts at American accents were pretty sad, of course, but that's a minor enough complaint. And then, of course, that final scene. It wasn't just pointless misery porn, though it certainly was that. It was just dumb. Minuet In Hell dumb. And at least I got some laughs out of Minuet In Hell.

It really is godawful, though at least this time it actually kinda sorta went somewhere in a future story instead of being dropped forever and having ZERO impact on anything at all.... but only because Lidster himself wrote the next story!

Tom was granted a single wish, and that was to get narration for his life from the best possible choice for narrator there was. That was the easiest day of work that genie ever had.

A more muted, vaguely angry Doctor doesn't need some crazy expressive firebrand as a Companion, he needs someone who can tolerate his general bullshit but tap him on the shoulder and go "Hey, yo, you're being a loving rear end in a top hat" when he gets to be too much, which is exactly what Clara can be. Well, he's done it again.

Having read the Toxx thread's write up of Time of the Doctor, I found myself wanting to rewatch some 12th Doctor episodes, and am quite annoyed that they're still not on Netflix. When do they usually show up? Shortly before the new season?

I wonder how the Doctor would have dealt with time travelling terminators?

Angela Christine posted:I wonder how the Doctor would have dealt with time travelling terminators? Depends on the Doctor. Eleven would probably go back to the dawn of computing during World War II and put some kind of persistent virus that would cause SkyNet to blow up when he said "rutabaga" in it's presence. Seven would manipulate SkyNet into being a counter for a Cyberman invasion and get them to kill each other off, leaving the humans to rebuild. Three would discover it was the Master behind it all along, get into a slow car chase, disable a T800 with Venusian Akido, then fiddle with something and watch the whole thing blow up in an explosion that wasn't as impressive as it ought to have been. Four would blunder around, let Romana do all the hard work, then happen to be there when it all paid off and then would claim all the credit. You know, just like always. Which is why we loved him. jng2058 posted:Beats me. I went dark for a couple of weeks before the 50th just to avoid spoilers. Given how bad the spoilers get online about Who, I guess I assumed that the spoilers were out there. If they weren't, it's a pretty impressive feat for Moffat and company, even more so given that whole fuckin' episodes got leaked for the first quarter of season eight. Continuing a discussion from the Toxx thread so I can talk about Twelve without spoiling Occ, it's interesting how spoilers or what you think are spoilers can warp your perception of a season. In my case, I'd heard around here someone say that they "knew" that Danny was going to replace Clara as the new companion at the end of the season. I believed whomever that was, and so when Danny got run over in "Dark Water" I was floored. Then when it seemed like he was coming back at the end of "Death in Paradise" I was like "ah-ha! Here it comes!" Then...he stayed dead! And finally, when "Last Christmas" hit I was sure that Clara was going to leave/die, and no, that didn't happen either. Granted that last one was a last minute decision by Coleman, but still, nothing happened they way I thought it would...which is a good thing! Anyway, the point is that even "spoilers" may not be. They may just be lies, or they may have been true when they heard them, but then changed.

Big Finish just announced a whole bunch of new series related content:quote:Leading this new wave of adventures is Alex Kingston as River Song, the beloved Time Lord archaeologist who first appeared in 2008's Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead. That's... quite a lot! Mixing old Doctors with new series enemies is really interesting. It seems like they're basically being allowed to play with anything that isn't a new series Doctor at this point.

It could just be too soon for Tennant or especially Matt Smith. And we know Eccleston is unlikely to ever want to do it.

River audios sound cool. I'd rather they just went ahead and had her meet the classic Doctors, though, that sounds like it would be funny and fun. They might have to do a little continuity wangling to manage it but it's Doctor Who, that kind of thing happens all the time.

Didn't River say she went and met all of his prior incarnations anyway? I recall some line where she said she met all of them, but did something to make them forget about it. (E: Of course, this directly contradicts her telling 10 that his eyes are "the youngest she's ever seen them" but I swear I remember this)
