I listened to The Reaping today.

You know, up til the last few minutes, I was kind of impressed. Not the tightest story ever told, but it more-or-less held together, and certainly a downer, but the emotional beats felt more-or-less natural rather than HA HA HA gently caress YOU I AM LIDSTARR DESTROYER OF LIGHT. The various attempts at American accents were pretty sad, of course, but that's a minor enough complaint.

And then, of course, that final scene. It wasn't just pointless misery porn, though it certainly was that. It was just dumb. Minuet In Hell dumb. And at least I got some laughs out of Minuet In Hell.

It really is godawful, though at least this time it actually kinda sorta went somewhere in a future story instead of being dropped forever and having ZERO impact on anything at all.... but only because Lidster himself wrote the next story!

From what I gather Twelve's probably gonna be a miserable cynical sarcastic rear end in a top hat, mostly because, one, that's what you cast Peter Capaldi to play, two, that's what Oxxidation is and Twelve's his Doctor for a reason, and three because then it makes Clara's sort of disinterested, bemused good nature make more sense. A more muted, vaguely angry Doctor doesn't need some crazy expressive firebrand as a Companion, he needs someone who can tolerate his general bullshit but tap him on the shoulder and go "Hey, yo, you're being a loving rear end in a top hat" when he gets to be too much, which is exactly what Clara can be.

Well, he's done it again.

Having read the Toxx thread's write up of Time of the Doctor, I found myself wanting to rewatch some 12th Doctor episodes, and am quite annoyed that they're still not on Netflix. When do they usually show up? Shortly before the new season?

Depends on the Doctor.

Eleven would probably go back to the dawn of computing during World War II and put some kind of persistent virus that would cause SkyNet to blow up when he said "rutabaga" in it's presence.

Seven would manipulate SkyNet into being a counter for a Cyberman invasion and get them to kill each other off, leaving the humans to rebuild.

Three would discover it was the Master behind it all along, get into a slow car chase, disable a T800 with Venusian Akido, then fiddle with something and watch the whole thing blow up in an explosion that wasn't as impressive as it ought to have been.

Four would blunder around, let Romana do all the hard work, then happen to be there when it all paid off and then would claim all the credit. You know, just like always. Which is why we loved him.

jng2058 posted:

Beats me. I went dark for a couple of weeks before the 50th just to avoid spoilers. Given how bad the spoilers get online about Who, I guess I assumed that the spoilers were out there. If they weren't, it's a pretty impressive feat for Moffat and company, even more so given that whole fuckin' episodes got leaked for the first quarter of season eight.

And I was just about to put a bunch of season eight spoilers here because I forgot which thread I was in. Whew. Lemme take it to the main thread.

Continuing a discussion from the Toxx thread so I can talk about Twelve without spoiling Occ, it's interesting how spoilers or what you think are spoilers can warp your perception of a season.

In my case, I'd heard around here someone say that they "knew" that Danny was going to replace Clara as the new companion at the end of the season. I believed whomever that was, and so when Danny got run over in "Dark Water" I was floored. Then when it seemed like he was coming back at the end of "Death in Paradise" I was like "ah-ha! Here it comes!" Then...he stayed dead! And finally, when "Last Christmas" hit I was sure that Clara was going to leave/die, and no, that didn't happen either. Granted that last one was a last minute decision by Coleman, but still, nothing happened they way I thought it would...which is a good thing!

Anyway, the point is that even "spoilers" may not be. They may just be lies, or they may have been true when they heard them, but then changed.

Big Finish just announced a whole bunch of new series related content:

quote:

Leading this new wave of adventures is Alex Kingston as River Song, the beloved Time Lord archaeologist who first appeared in 2008's Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead.

River will be stepping into the era of the Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann) for Doctor Who: Doom Coalition 2, alongside Liv Chenka (Nicola Walker) and Helen Sinclair (Hattie Morahan). But how can River help her husband if, in this incarnation, she must never actually meet him?

River will then return later in 2016 in Doctor Who: The Diary of River Song, an epic four-hour adventure that takes River across space and time, seeking out the secret rulers of the universe. Paul McGann will reprise the role of the Eighth Doctor in the final instalment.

The New Series adventures will continue in Doctor Who: The Churchill Years, in which Ian McNeice returns as the indomitable Winston Churchill. In the four-hour saga, Winston relates a number of encounters with the Ninth, Tenth and Eleventh Doctors in his memoirs, battling alien incursions, metamorphosing creatures... and a Dalek! The stories are told by Ian McNeice, supported by a full cast of guest actors, including Danny Horn as Kazran Sardick, in a story taking place within the 2010 special A Christmas Carol.

Finally, the Fifth, Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Doctors will face a new generation of monsters in Doctor Who: Classic Doctors, New Monsters, a brand new, four-story run featuring creatures from the New Series. Peter Davison takes on the Weeping Angels, Colin Baker encounters the Judoon, Sylvester McCoy will meet the Sycorax... and Paul McGann will face a new clone batch of Sontarans on the edge of the Time War...

Maybe they can use new Doctors now, but none of the actors are willing to do it yet. It could just be too soon for Tennant or especially Matt Smith. And we know Eccleston is unlikely to ever want to do it.

River audios sound cool. I'd rather they just went ahead and had her meet the classic Doctors, though, that sounds like it would be funny and fun. They might have to do a little continuity wangling to manage it but it's Doctor Who, that kind of thing happens all the time.

I think the 8th Doctor, being a kind of bridge between Classic and New Who, is the perfect one to introduce River Song to the Big Finish audios with.

Didn't River say she went and met all of his prior incarnations anyway? I recall some line where she said she met all of them, but did something to make them forget about it.

The Churchill one says that he'll be telling stories of 9, 10, and 11, sooooo . . . maybe it's just a case of actor availability at the moment? Tennant's filming Jessica Jones and has Broadchurch 3 coming up. One can only PRAY that it's simply a case of getting scripts and storylines and schedules all synchronized.

edit 9, 10, and 11 ARE on the cover to The Churchill Years!
