there was some major dramabomb today where an administrator got fired out of nowhere and they had to shut down r/iama, r/science, r/games, and a whole bunch of others but i don't know why any of this happened

oh okay. they fired the person who organized all the celebrity amas and won't say anything about why it happened even the other admins didn't know until they got mails asking "uh where is the ama?" from the person who called the administrator to get everything set up, and the admin said "oh i got fired today, sorry" quote:It's not a matter of brinksmanship, it's that we honestly can't function the same way without Victoria. so just to summarize someone exited from reddit staff. they still had an account, though and said they'd still help IAmA no one knows why they exited, either fired, laid off or quit basically every subreddit with more than 1000 subscribers self-immolates by going private so no one but admins can see the subreddit every other subreddit vows "solidarity" with the self-immolated ones, still no one knowing why the person left reddit as staff in the first place pretty amazing that multiple presumed adults across dozens of "respectable" subreddits could all be so stupid

I was being slightly facetious, Kevin. The ama person they fired was a paid admin who managed the ama talent and was uniquely crucial. Everyone else gets paid in rare pepes and has no particular loyalty to reddit itself.

i could see paying out to mods of high-traffic/default subreddits...maybe. i mean the reason for this whole "protest" thing in some subreddits is because the volunteers mods lost the only person they knew who was actually paid to deal with redditors.

reddit calls itself an "open platform", not a media company. they want to be more like a communication protocol and they pull this out whenever they get called out for hosting links to child porn or whatever. paying someone to use your open platform/protocol seems weird, especially when the "mods" don't really have any rules to enforce besides posting personal information.
