I thought most of the attention for Hatred came from Valve removing it hours after it was greenlit, not from some organized campaign to have it banned. Hatred played gamers like a drat fiddle!

Quote-Unquote posted:How did people feel about the last Tomb Raider game? I thought it was pretty good imo. It was nice to see a protagonist out of her depth that starts off really reluctant to be violent, is kinda disgusted with herself when she realises what horrible things she's capable of and then basically goes full on Linda Hamilton doing whatever the gently caress it takes to survive and ensure the safety of her friends and loved ones when faced with an unstoppable supernatural force. Also it cast aside a dumb romance angle and kept on reinforcing how dumb it was to have anything romantic going on during this serious poo poo trying to kill everybody. Unlike every single Bioware rpg where you press the 'nice' button a handful of times while trying to save the universe and get a sex scene for your efforts even though you're all about to die. The new Wolfenstein has an excellent woman character in it that gets even better if you start investigating her history more. My av is a flayed pony skin over a Necron. I don't think I've ever loved it this much.

The new Tomb Raider was actually pretty rad, if you can get past the dumb rebar impaling part that ultimately had no consequence. I can even forgive the generic Gears of War combat, since it was fairly solid anyway.

Yeah the beginning part seemed to border on gratuitous torture porn with as much poo poo the game throws at Laura that it made me feel almost uncomfortable to play. Not because she's a woman, but because it's so needless and senseless. But a few hours into it picks up and because a competent if ultimately forgettable cover shooter.

This is just like walking dead and dark knight, because we know you guys are totally into that." It thankfully improved once it got away from the whole death-murder-simulation sections and returned to just being an action game with interesting scenery.

Sure, we can talk past each other for a bit: You have to stand up for poo poo you don't want to if you're going to stand up for anything, and there's always someone who only wants to talk about how disgusting it is that you're defending something disgusting, and they're often the one that insisted you defend it to begin with if you defend anything they don't approve of.

Smudgie Buggler posted:Are you just complaining about the fact that arguments like those Gaiman lays out are compelling? Because that's sure what it looks like. I hate to answer for this guy, but I definately think he's getting at something wayyyy different so I'm going to take a whack at it: He's more or less just noting one way that arguments about censorship can be shut down is by a escalating and derailing the subject in a way that exploits the ignorance of whoever is arguing against censorship in general. Let my try to show what I mean with an example: Now take Joe, the incredibly boring Internet poster, who is arguing that videogame violence should not be censored because doing so would censor compelling media which, in context, is about how violence and war are bad. Joe can make this argument without coming across as a sociopath because he's played Spec Ops: The Line, a game which is extremely violent but also shows that violence is a terrible thing. Now let's say Jane, the remarkably boring Internet poster, yanks the general free speech principles Joe advocates and applies them to fictional media that sexualizes children. Joe internet poster doesn't know much about that media, he never read Lolita or Lost Girls or really much of anything, as he's wasted his life consuming Adam Sandler movies and Let's Plays. He's totally unprepared to pursue this argument without coming across as a pedophile and the absolute best option for him is to completely back down from it entirely. Gaimans argument, on the other hand, is a pretty compelling one, at the very least you don't walk away from it thinking he's a pedophile. But he can only pull that off because he's thought about it and understands it and can talk about it at length in a thoughtful and nuanced way while pulling out a lot of detailed examples and personal experiences. Most of the arguments Joe and Jane get in, on the other hand, are restricted to 140 characters and thier intellectual background is nonexistent. As an aside, please stop reading this thread, you're one of the better posters here and I'd hate to see your brain leak out your ears from looking at this too long. Hell just the other week I peeped in on this thread and suffered a huge seizure due to its awfulness, which has subsequently hosed up my ability to speak properly. OK, maybe that was just the temporal lobe epilepsy and not gamer gate, but nobody should take that chance.

The New Order is a great game that shows you can have strong, non-sexualized female characters with a ton of agency, and a great male protagonist character who actually expresses his emotions in a non-noir way. McIntosh made a good point that, in contrast to this, the difficulty screen is typical eye-rolling "are you MAN ENOUGH' clicheness.
