Lighting during storms is so epic.

Low sun coming in from the side, dark clouds overhead.. it always looks amazing.

A boombox is not a toy!

I'm jealous of that first Smart picture because my chase partner was right next to that tornado and I skipped that day because of a sinus infection, and I haven't seen anything remotely good the rest of the year.

I can't stand Smart's garish processing though. If you're looking for storm pictures with more relaxed processing, Mike Hollingshead is awesome:

This is his shot that was used for a cover of Nat Geo a few years ago:

Yeah the processing on that Smart fellow's other stuff is pretty lame but that first one that was posted is great.

A lot of storm chaser photography doesn't do a very good job with composition, it feels more documentary than anything. It's just "here's an epic storm cell, isn't it nice?" and that's all you get.

I appreciate there isn't a lot of time to think about composition, you're either trying to catch up to the storm or get the gently caress out of its way, but it does mean the rare shot that gets everything right stands out a lot more.

Yeah, you definitely don't have time to look for decent foregrounds, plan shots, try to find better lighting, etc.

Almost forgot to mention the thing with Smart's first shot that makes it even more rare is that it is the anti-cyclonic twin of another tornado. In the northern hemisphere nearly every tornado is cyclonic (counter-clockwise). Out of the 59 tornadoes I've seen, only one of them has been anti-cyclonic. Here's an earlier shot of the same storm from Kevin Saunders (cyclonic tornado on left, anti-cyclonic on right):

TBH I was more just tired of mediocre storm photos, and I happened to be browsing Alec Soth at the time because of what Thoogsby posted at the top of the page. I definitely *like* the shots I posted but I'm not so in love with them that I feel like they should be defended.

e. I take that back. The first one, I really like. Do you feel like that one needs an explanation or do you agree that it is the strongest of the three?

What can I say? I, like many photographers, writers and may other artists for that matter, am drawn to images inspired by family and the one's closest to us. There is a certain intimacy that comes through an image when made from within any relationship whether loving, difficult, conflicted, or otherwise. But then, aren't most relationships in one or more of these states at given anytime? Dog Days Bogotá by Alec Soth is not these images of interaction; it is a prequel to this. It's more like a promise to bring someone—someone innocent and a bit unknown—the most unconditional promise of love. It is a beautiful monograph of images made in Columbia, the birthplace of his adopted daughter, Carmen Laura. The introduction reads, in part:

Carmen's birthmother gave her a book filled with letters, pictures and poems. "I hope that the hardness of the world will not hurt your sensitivity," she wrote, "When I think about you I hope that your life is full of beautiful things."

Alec Soth took those words as a mission statement and began documenting the city where Carmen was born. I read somewhere that he did not originally set out make a book, rather to document this hard place for the beauty that remained among man's failures. Either way, the images are wonderful.

The metropolitan area of Bogotá has 8 million in population. In an area so densely inhabited, crime, pollution and corruption make life dangerous. Among the struggles in such a place are good intentions and honorable actions and life in earnest pursuit of good. A place where there is hope. This book is proof.

The pictures are square. A different approach than we are used to seeing from Mr. Soth. This format sets this body of work apart from the rest of his imagery, furthering emphasizing the personal nature of his efforts. The book is stunningly printed and small, which is a lot like flipping through a handful of five-inch prints. This format and the natural, gentle colors throughout beg for quiet contemplation at each image.

Guns and saints. Feral dogs. Military. Faith. Crumbling city buildings. Life making life beautiful. Handing each other compliments and insults. Giving and taking and taking and giving. Dog Days Bogotá shows what life holds for us, what we have let pass by us, where to find what we are seeking.

Sorry, the ones I posted admittedly weren't awesome. The watermark abuser's image was just for context in showing the rare event that the original picture captured, and the other ones are just interesting examples of one of the better weather photographers out there - although still rather bland from a fine art perspective. Bart Radfucker lives on.

If you're interested in finding more awesome contemporary photographers Selektor posted a list of 100 photographers on tumblr http://selektormagazine.tumblr.com/post/99981569945/100-photographers-on-tumblr-fr-commence-en.

The list only contains about 8 ladies on it, prompting another photographer to post a list of women photographers on tumblr: http://tammymercure.tumblr.com/post/100120734876/first-let-me-apologize-for-preaching-to-the.

Lot's of blogs in there and lots of good contemporary work (in my admittedly ignorant opinion).

Since Jim Richardson has been posted already (if you're ever in Lindsborg, Kansas, visit his gallery), I've enjoyed some of Stephen Locke's work (http://tempestgallery.com/index.html). He does a lot of weather and great plains landscape photography, and some time lapse cinematography of storms and supercells (a good example here).

The scale and distance he gets out of some of his shots is impressive, I think.
