Is there any particular reason UPS doesn't want their trucks to make it to a secondhand market? If it's just a question of they only retire vehicles that are no longer safe to operate that's one thing, but the fact that they need an employee present at the crushing seems a little excessive.

I just want to add that UPS trucks and their drivers are impressively competent in the snow. We'll get some stupid amount of snow that even the bro trucks are afraid to go out in and yet there's the UPS guy hauling rear end with a 1 storey high wake of powder behind him.

Couple years ago I saw a FedEx truck centre punch a UPS truck on dry roads in broad daylight. Just-in-time cross-courier delivery, I guess.

Probably something like the MUTT - "This vehicle is, in fact, dangerously unsafe and can't be safely used by folks lacking ~specialised training~; crush 'em". The training amounts to kegel exercises so you don't poo poo yourself when the vehicle rolls over, allowing salvage of the upholstry for depot spares. (I don't know).

This is probably true... ups doesnt want the added liability of being a truck dealer. Their truck is also kind of their brand.. so they are probably looking to keep the look exclusive to UPS and not Eds Crack Filling: concrete repair.

Slavvy posted:I got told this by a Mercedes Benz technical assistance guy so I don't know if it's true first hand: evidently the first generation ML in the north american market had an all-white wiring loom with the terminal connector locations and function of the individual wires stencilled on each wire, like a built-in wiring diagram. It was meant to aid diagnosis or some other germanlogic poo poo and was brutally expensive to make, which gives it the flavour of being true. Freightliner has been doing this since the late '80s, so I imagine the global Merc heavy trucks have been doing it at least that long and I'd be shocked if that hadn't made its way into a lot of other Merc products. It aids diagnosis massively, but that's mainly because monocolor wire is extremely effective at scaring away all the people who shouldn't be loving with electrical stuff so you spend less time correcting hamfisted repair attempts. The markings do have a tendency to be not entirely permanent though (because we all know Mercedes to pick only the very finest wire suppliers ).

UPS as far as I can tell have a huge hard on for their brand. There's always been a story on the Internet and in shops about a large number of UPS uniforms that had either been stolen or misdelivered or otherwise erroneously purchased by an outside party on ebay. UPS almost instantly bought them up as that story goes because they were trying to protect their image as reliable dependable couriers.

They were such pieces of poo poo that when they were retired for HMMWVs, our maintenance sergeant got down on his knees and wept in joy. Unsafe, unreliable, and trying to do any fording or amphibious work (It supposedly floats IF all the seals are intact which of course they aren't) was an exercise in frustration. If anybody wants one, they are an idiot and you can use that for a reference test.

They also run informal contests to see who can wear their shorts the furthest into winter. This is actually not an uncommon challenge among delivery companies, but the first time I heard about it was UPS drivers in Alaska, they got a story in the local news because one guy made it through one particular January where the area had an average temperature of -5F. I can take cold better than many but working a delivery van for 8 hours in subzero temps with shorts on would probably do me in.

It looks like the typical design-by-committee military vehicle. Once upon a time it was probably a simple, robust transport vehicle on some bright young engineer's drawing board, but its conception as an ARPA project left it ultimately doomed to feature creep like "unified-vehicle modularity", "multi mission capability" and other buzzwords. Of course every time ARPA tossed a new spec change their way the manufacturer happily nodded with dollar signs lit up in their eyes, while the original designer quietly wept at his drawing board. Speaking of, is it too early to post the F-35 in this thread?
