Pretty much most 2-3 year old used cars at a dealer were a lease, they're as fine as any other used car all other things being equal. Obviously that car had another owner in the intervening years which is again totally expected given the terms of most leases and the age of that car.

I am a little surprised that the car had a coil replaced very early, though it doesn't seem like there have been any subsequent issues.

I just got my first job out of grad-school. I'm moving to Boston from NYC and I am going to need a car. My wife also needs a car, so this is going to be an expensive time in our lives. My car: Proposed Budget: $5K cash, willing to finance + 11K (So 16K total) New or Used: Whatever Body Style: Hatchback How will you be using the car?: Daily commute (2 - 15 miles, housing is still being decided), monthly trips to family (160 miles round trip) What aspects are most important to you? The most important things to me are cost and fuel economy. I would like something fun to drive and I strongly prefer manual transmissions. Also I grew up driving in California, so snow is going to be an experience. I'm an aware and calm person, so I don't expect it to be too big a hurdle if I take it slow. Also, my job is non-essential and I can do some work from home. I'm thinking right now about a Mazda 3 or a Ford Fiesta. Honda Fits are nice too, but I don't like how they look. I also take great care and pride in equipment, enjoy working on cars, and tend to own things for a very long time. Our current thought is for her to pick up something cheap but reliable (probably a early 2nd gen Prius) with cash on hand, and then finance my car. I'm thinking of buying a new Ford Fiesta SE (the 1.0 with the eco-boost). I expect to own it for 7-10 years and when I calculated out the cost per mile over that time-frame the new car actually came out cheaper than the used, assuming a 250,000 mile lifespan and equivalent maintenance requirements. But I'm also a new grad thinking of buying a new car and could probably use a stern talking to. Are we being reasonable? Are there better cars for us to be looking at?

Poeple forget light weight cars have less momentum so they are much easier to control in those oh crap situations. My BRZ with a set of blizzak tires handles just about anything the Great Lakes decide to dump on me. Modern traction control is pretty amazing and combine that with the benefits of driving a lightweight manual car, you can prevent those little oh crap situations from turning into oh poo poo situations. If main roads have 6" of snow on them then I won't be driving no matter what car I own.

Are Chryslers still godawful deathtrap unreliable pieces of poo poo? Part of me sees the 200c and says "That's nice and stylish and the interior looks pretty awesome and I could almost see myself in one" and another part says "CHRYSLER LOL"

The general opinion of people in this thread is that the 200 is a large piece of poo poo. Yeah, it's a nice looking car but for the price you can do a lot better. I am not a big fan of Chrysler products but I did look at them when I was looking for a new car. After comparing them to every other manufacturer I still did not feel compelled to buy one based on what I have read here on people's driving experiences with them. Edit: the two stories below mine seem to reflect what I have read here, they cite specific examples of why you should not buy a 200. I've been driving rentals for the last month or so and I can easily say that the modern Chrysler 200 is one of the worst cars I've driven in my life. Check out the car and driver review on this thing. They do a good job of tearing that car apart. THAT SAID - it isn't a bad idea to take a 200 for a test drive. Its exaggerated weaknesses will let you understand what not to take for granted in a car. Edit/Safety Disclaimer: Be aware that when you test drive it the blind spots are a bit more extreme than a normal car, so be more vigilant than you are used to. On a similar note, be pensive about trusting the backup camera. It's not as honest as backup cameras in other cars. Edit2: Yes - UConnect is actually pretty nice, but don't let that distract you from the issues plaguing the rest of the car. I had a Chrysler 200 as a rental for a week. The car looked good. That's where the good stopped. Blind spots everywhere (this might be every mid-size sedan in this segment now?), lots of highway noise, gutless engine, etc. It made the 2015 Jetta SE 1.8T I had the month before seem like a BMW. edit: Also YES to to the previous poster, the backup camera is complete poo poo

Things have changed slightly. We landed an apartment a 10 minute bike ride from my work and a 5 minute walk from transport into downtown Boston. Which means we probably won't need 2 cars. Yay! The place is a little more expensive than the stuff further out, but not paying insurance on a second vehicle more than makes up for it. So we're shifting to buying a single car, looking for a maximum of 6-7 k. We're still thinking about a Honda Fit or a Prius. The Boston used car market seems pretty expensive, at least for the cars worth buying. People in Boston also seem to have actually driven their Prius's, with a lot of them on the high side of 160 k.

Are there any huge known issues with the latest model year RAV4? My wife is pretty stressed out post-accident (December) and feels like she wants something with a little higher seating position and better safety rating than the 07 Prius. It's still worth a bit on trade-in (low miles) and her commute is short enough that we won't see a huge difference in gas $. I haven't seen anything major in a tacit googlin', but you guys are a really good source of known issues--and I know some newer Toyota engines have had TSB oil-drinking issues. Thoughts?

I haven't been able to find much of anything else bad about the 2AR, but my mom's car (10 Highlander) runs the 1AR-FE and it's been dead reliable for them. I just know some of the Camrys and older RAV4s were noted for drinking oil out of a McDonalds straw. She took my Prius and we bought a 'beater' (old 4Runner  ) for me to drive when her car was totaled, but she has sort of gotten progressively more paranoid about being in another accident. I was a passenger in a pretty serious wreck when I was 16 (unhurt) and it made me jumpy as hell, so I can see where she's coming from.The Prius is rated really well, but she's used to an SUV (had an Escape) and feels way more comfortable in a larger car. RAV4 was a top safety pick and she loves the way it looks. Not like we can't afford it or anything, but letting go of extra money always feels bad. I hate dealers. Wish me luck.

I make part of the engine for the Chrysler 200. I would not buy one. What you have to remember about it, the fiat 500, and whatever model Jeep has the same powertrain is that Chrysler went full retard and decided to fit an all new 9 speed automatic transmission built at an all new factory in South Carolina staffed with all new and somewhat clueless workers, into a series of low cost econoboxes. This is definitely a recipe for quality.
