What's the deal with Source 2? I guess Dota 2 uses it in beta? Is it something they could just throw TF2's assets into with little to no issue (lol)?

Art assets could probably reasonably ported to Source 2 as the file types are iterative enhancements, but all the game code would probably be a massive effort.

Might as well make TF3 at that point.

Nope, it's a terrible idea! But there are a lot of bad/newbie engies who seriously think in terms of "this is the good place to put a sentry".

It's compounded by the prevalence of bad players who, when held back by a sentry, think "I should go spy" not "I should go demo" or "we need an ubercharge". Like you said, that clustering of sentry nests is weak to explosives but strong against spies, and so these engineers actually get rewarded for their behavior as long as they're playing with fellow low-level players.

Seriously, I can't tell you how many times in this last week I've seen a cluster of sentries on RED, and half of BLU gradually changing to spy only to get taken out by all the engineers watching each other's backs. It lasts until the one or two knowledgeable players on BLU get competent sentry-busting setup ready.

This is never truer than when I play spy. It's my favorite class, I've been a despicable pub spy for literally years. I only ever switch to spy when we don't have one, because from experience any number of spies higher than one results in diminishing returns very quickly. And I usually do pretty well, which isn't that hard. At some point I'll be feeling pretty good, near the top of the scoreboard, then notice another spy on the team. Then I'll check the scoreboard and notice we now have two extra spies, invariably at the bottom of the scoreboard with single digit points between them. Three Stooges music plays over the rest of the map as one of the spies routinely manages to spin enemies around to face both of us, and the other sits in the enemy spawn with the cloak and dagger, waiting for The Perfect Kill.

It's like having an annoying younger brother coming in when you're trying to work on something. Go play outside idiots, I was doing fine without you.

I've seen this described as the Little Brother effect before. If you're doing well as a class people will invariably swap to that class to try to do well too. I've had this happen with every class except medic, because people loving hate playing medic.

Only the dead can know peace from these hats.
Back in my early days of playing I never really touched the Engineer class, though if there was a teleporter outside our spawn, I knew enough that it was helpful to briefly swap to Engie and upgrade it and then go back to whatever it was I was wanting to play. While doing this once I accidentally went through the teleporter and ended up in the owner's nest, where I panicked because I was still pretty new to the game and had no idea how to do anything as Engineer (and the fact my fps was between 5-15 didn't help matters). I ended up building a sentry next to the other Engineer's on the last point of Gravelpit and used his dispenser to get metal for it, too.

I must've bothered that poor Engie so much. :(

It never seems to work for me for classes that it's fine to have lots of, only when I'm pubbing around as a spy/sniper. Wrecking poo poo with booties/stickybombs/eyelander, just laying waste to the entire (terrible) enemy team? I rarely get more demomen. Get some nice stabs as a spy? Spy horde.

Did the gun mettle coins not count the first two contracts from the start of the campaign? It says I've only done 4, but I've received 6 contract drops so far. It probably won't matter either way, just losing out on a less shinier coin. Assuming there will only be 24 contracts for 3 months anyways.

I had an idiot moment playing today.
Playing Soldier I got set on fire near our resupply on Snowplow. So I started running back to spawn to grab a med kit. As I opened the door I was so low on health I realized if I continued to burn I was dead, so I just stopped and was going to let myself die. At one health left the burning stopped and I when I realized that I wasn't going to die I grabbed my mouse to resupply, hit the button on the mouse by mistake and killed myself with splash damage.

I almost wouldn't even care about Heavy getting buffs all that much if they'd just do something about the crit problem. At the very least, make it so long-range damage falloff applies to minigun random crits, getting instagibbed from sniping range is annoying as hell.

Heavies still have a damage penalty against sentries, it's just smaller.

I used to complain about mini-sentries, but then they were nerfed, and then they were nerfed again, and they no longer bothered me, even as someone who most often plays scout. This was months and months ago. Maybe like a year? I forget.

This most recent nerf seems totally unnecessary, but I guess they had their reasons among all these competitive-facing changes.

Minis aren't underpowered, players have gotten used to a lazy gunslinger playstyle that should never have been effective to begin with. Just plop a mini down in a general area and let it be annoying, shoot mens as they come, build another mini as soon as it dies. There was no reason to do differently, it was just what worked best. Now building minis in front of enemies is a thing that can be punished, they build slower and only start at half health. But the engie can repair them and there's reward in hiding minis in nooks or bushes keeping them alive a while longer. You get a health bonus and a sentry more suited to that style of ninja sentry play, that's what the gunslinger was supposed to be all along.

The gunslinger engie making GBS threads minis out in plain sight is a thing I'm happy to see die. Of course he isn't dead, gunslinger engies still continue to do exactly that and probably will forever because that's what they learned to do. But they are now an ineffectual annoyance, which is good.

I think it's cute when you see a new player in over their head but they're in there trying to pitch in and bail out that sinking boat.

First match I ever played in TFC we spawned in Well and I surged out the door with the rest of the pack, terrified and anticipating instant slaughter from digital huns. Seeing death at in every corner I screeched in alarm as the press of bodies carried us into the ramp room - with its high balcony and multiple doorways it seemed a killing ground. I swung my gun upwards and mag dumped, at nothing, in my own base, about 10 seconds into the round. The surge of team mates cleared the ramp room and stepped out into the yard; I sighed with relief - I'd suppressed the enemy as we passed the kill point, I'd done my part.

From what I'm hearing, it's the same filter solution they've used on all the open-pit maps like Upward, just applied to all the remaining closed-pit maps.

Which means custom maps are still exploitable unless the author has added the same filter.

Very few custom maps rely on a physics collision to trigger their finale. I mean there's certainly some out there as some people probably C&P'd entities from the Valve map, but for the most part mappers saw Valve's solution as stupid and did it a better way.
