Doug Fehan told me they were going to use the Larbre car at Mosport too. Fun fact: that chassis was also the #4 car last year.

Yep, have been for decades. Saves weight.

e: I'm googling and it seems that for vibration/crash absorption purposes engines may have very specific casings or some such? Somebody else more knowledgeable please answer, I'm curious. :)

I'm sorry to inform you that car laws in many parts of europe are much worse than those in the US.

And if you want to be gearhead in europe I hope you have really deep pockets because everything car related (except beat-up economy shitboxes) is expensive.

Engine swaps? Ha!

One of my big envies is that the US, for the most part, does not give a poo poo about cars compared to most of Europe, and you can get away with a lot more as a gearhead.

And cars are so cheap over there! You can get a Mustang for like $30k! You can get a Corvette if you're not a banker! And fuel is so cheap you can actually drive them!

Of course I'm sure there's plenty to be jealous of over here. Grass is always greener and all that.

Pretty much the only thing I can see that's bad about being in the US is the 25 year wait for old Japanese cars.

But yeah, grass is greener, definitely.

Exclude Italy from Europe then. One of our most infamous car laws is that engine swaps can only be done with the original manufacturer's written permission; other parts replacements (even wheels) are outright banned if the new parts aren't included in the original registration. There have been people forced to go to Germany to certify and register their EV conversions or tuned cars (in Germany you just bring your car to TV or DEKRA, pay, and let them certify whether it's road legal or not; Italians usually opt for TV because they have a branch in Italy), and Italian police will still sometimes disregard the German documentation and take your car away. Forget about being refunded after you successfully prove the car is road legal and it's given back to you years later. Another way around the laws is to get registered as a manufacturer: you are then given a (small) number of registration plates that you can slap on your contraptions (I have no idea of the fees and limitations to being a manufacturer)

The only good car law in Italy is that they will (mostly) honor the laws from other EU countries

Also doesn't Denmark tax cars at some ridiculous amount meaning if you want to buy a car you'd better have at least 150% of the actual price of the car?

*edit: 180%

Apparently people are paid well though since this was brought in so it's less dumb than it sounds. Only like 35% of Copenhagen's population (530k) own a car though.

Technically, it's a registration fee, not a tax. If you buy a car that will not be used on public roads, you only pay basic sales tax on it.

The registration fee is 105% on the first 81,700 DKK (~$12K) and 180% on anything above that. For motorcycles the values are a bit lower, the first 9,200 DKK (~$1.3K) are free and the changeover from 105% to 180% is at 25,800 DKK (~$3.8K). There are also various penalties and bonuses based on fuel economy, safety features etc.

As an example, some friends of mine who live in Dubai just bought a Porsche Boxster GTS. They paid the same as you would for a mid-spec Opel Insignia in Denmark. And gas costs ~11 DKK per litre ($6.08/gallon).

And yes, we do have relatively high wages, but cars are still relatively expensive. That and the amazing public transport and bicycle facilities in Copenhagen account for the low car uptake. When literally 99% of your everyday needs are within walking or biking distance, it's much better to just rent a car for those rare occasions where you need one. And Denmark is very flat in general (tallest point is less than 200m above sea level), which makes it ideal for cycling.

Outside of the larger cities, cars still rule the road, though.

Start here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lotus_49

Basically yes, the engine is a load-bearing structure in F1. So is everything else- if it's on the car, then if at all possible, it's also load-bearing and part of the crash structure. The carbon fiber cockpit is, essentially, the "frame" of the car. The driver's seat is more or less a shaped bit attached to the frame with some foam. The engine is assumed to be the rear crash structure so you only need to worry about adding one up front to cover both sides. Everything else is held on with the minimal necessary structure for aero / stiffness / safety regs.

To see a modern car's internals, the Sauber F1 cutaway:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Wn1EFLa2C8

In a way this makes total sense. The car is built almost like a rocket. You have your engine, on top of that you bolt fuel, and on top of that a closed compartment to keep the crew safe. Anything else that's not mandatory is just adding weight. This is just so far from what you could ever do in your garage- anyone with mechanical inclinations first thinks of welding a tube frame chassis together.

(random image of a slot car that's built remarkably accurate to tube frame racing)

Start by looking at that model and figuring out which parts you potentially could do away with. All of a sudden making the engine a load-bearing member looks obvious.

e: And all of this is very oversimplified. Basically, the whole car IS the frame, the side pods help with rigidity as does the running board as does... etc.
