Wesley Clark said the same thing about McCain during the 08 campaign, it was barely on the news for 2 days. Don't underesteimate the ability of someone to totally warp their valus to justify their current opinions. John Kerry is far more deserving of being called a war hero than McCain, and he's been called a traitor for 11 years by everyone on the right wing.

America deserves only Victory and they are the sort of people that can't stand losers sullying our military record with a loss. Just because it hasn't been said in a while because McCain's generation has become the establishment doesn't mean that animosity doesn't still exist and is very palpable for a base that would love to fry any RINO for any reason, let alone not being Audie Murphy and coming back to the states in a USA themed Roman Triumph.

Or just because he tends to want to talk and even occasionally sell compromise rather than hold a child like stance along party lines against the gay/feminist/black/Jew/Muslim/pro choice menace. McCain has never been a far right poo poo bag and has a history of going against his party's line when the time is right. He's willing to actually work with the Democrats sometimes and is perfectly willing to vote for what Democrats are putting up if he agrees with it. He's still a right wing prick to be sure but as the party has gone further and further to the right he hasn't gone with them and they have increasingly hated him for it. Now that politics have gotten so incredibly polarized and the right's policy is "do what we want or we burn the whole thing down" anybody that's willing to compromise on anything, ever, at all is branded a RINO and cast out.

I know it's still really early in the interminable hellscape that is an American Presidential Election, but what is the Good Thread's honest opinion about Trump's actual, realistic odds of getting the GOP nom? Yeah you guys really don't get the whole Trump phenomenon. He's out there saying dumb poo poo and that literally is the best thing he can do. The fact that he's saying poo poo with no filter means he's not 'controlled' by anyone, he's not focus grouped, and he's not a politician. People are sick and tired of politicians and will accept just about anything from Trump as long as he isn't a congressperson or a governor or whatever.

The base may like him, but will there eventually come a moment where the party brass takes The Donald's ball away, tells him playtime is over, and puts forward someone else? It's genuinely difficult to say at this point. Trump has turned into one of those genuinely weird candidates who doesn't fit easily into the established way of doing things. There's a lot of reason to think the GOP establishment will refuse to condone him, but he's struck a powerful populist vein in the American far right. Basically, Trump is the logical end result of the Tea Party movement and that's something the GOP never intended. He is not going to be president bar freak circumstances, though. If he gets the GOP nom, holy poo poo is he doing to piss off moderates and undecideds, and there's a good chance he'll mobilize more people to vote for Hillary than the Democrats ever could. If he runs third party like he's threatening, the Democrats will get a historic victory. Probably the biggest question mark for Trump is just how much of his own hype he believes versus how much is showmanship.
