Pastry of the Year posted:This sort of reminds me of when I saw a chocolate chip cookie in a vending machine that said NEW! IMPROVED RECIPE. It made me feel like they were sort of loving with us. Cookie technology didn't just experience some sort of huge, previously inconceivable advance. The best chocolate chip cookie that our culture is ever going to make has already been made, guaranteed. If your job is making chocolate chip cookies and you're still working that poo poo out in the twenty-first century to the point that your announcement of an improvement is something you've got to advertise, then maybe I'll just keep waiting until you catch up with anyone who's ever put the slightest bit of effort into baking. 10% of the time this means that they've swapped out an expensive ingredient for a cheaper one. 90% of the time this means that they've adjusted the amounts of expensive ingredients down and the amounts of cheaper ingredients up. 100% of the time it is to head off customer complaints about it tasting weird.

Re: Beats, I worked at Best Buy when they first came out. We stocked them near the iPods for obvious reasons, but since they were MONSTER brand at the time, they had their own little display that showcased the Monster bit as much as the Dre bit. Everyone thought they looked cool, but they were like 3 times the price of the other "nice" headphones from Sennheiser or Bose because they were made with Monster quality components. Something like $180 for the low end ear bud, and $350 for the over ear ones. Hell, I think they may have even been priced at $450 at one point. Well we stocked them and played with them, and they were nice, but not anything ~Amazing~, and they sat on the shelf collecting dust with maybe one or two sold to a college kid with too much money on his hands. Most customers thought they were nice and sleek but thought they were way over priced and mocked the displays. Then the Dre commercials started and the marketing blitz happened and we couldn't keep them in the store. We'd have ipods and other devices sit untouched while people just ate up the Beats stuff. It was "cool" to have them even though the pricing didn't matter. People didn't care about the Monster part either, they just cared about the Dre thing or having it look cool, even if they didn't have the device to play music through them. I guess it was a Good Move in Marketing, but people Dumb with Money. The quality is decent, but not ~Amazing~ and the range isn't anything to write home about, or at least it wasn't when I worked at Best Buy.

Anyways, I only use the big "cover your ear" style headphones. The impression I get is that Beats are only barely better than the twenty buck headphones I got from Meijer's (think Super Walmart without the Walmart level of customer). My son has a chintzy pair from five below that lost stereo function due to him having all the care of an 8 year old, but are still not terrible. Very little of that absurd cost is explainable beyond brand recognition. I grabbed a pair of '5 Below' headphones for my kid and they died about 20 minutes into a 21 hour car ride, so you're doing pretty good with just stereo lost. I listen to radio streaming, and they have their own commercial playlist separate from traditional radio. I absolutely hate Progressive's commercials, where Flo does a bunch of terrible-sounding voice impressions. I mute every one of them. I don't begrudge the actress making a living, but whenever I hear " HEY IT'S FLO!" I think about how the Erin Esurance commercials got removed because of porn and wonder if the same trick could be done... I'm not a good person.

The Flo actress was about to quit acting all together since she was bombing all of her auditions and no one liked her as a serious contender for daytime TV. She would only find voice work and bit spots in (at the time) obscure shows. Did a random casting call for some throw-away commercial gimmick gig. Flo was born. Progressive is now the largest carrier of personal lines auto policies (May not be directly related to the marketing though) THE MORE YOU KNOW.

Well that's because the people who switch save an average of $500!* *(because the people who were quoted a higher price than they are currently paying didn't switch, so there are no negative numbers in that average)

Insurance companies all have like 3 commercial themes, is weird. Think GEICO had the cavemen and gecko and another one. I spoke about this before but the end of the cavemen one is weird because it had been years since the "so easy a caveman could do it" would play. So all the back story was gone. So I wonder if people that didn't know that part were confused why there was hairy men in an insurance commercial.

There were commercials, but it never saw the light of day. I wanna say because the commercials portrayed it as painfully unfunny.

When everyone thinks of the product category they think of your product, combined with a product category virtually no-one would have previously thought about. Actually, from the company's perspective, that's bad. They work had to trademark their names, and hate it if the generic/competitor's version is called theirs.
