The best you can really hope for with Doctor Who and canon is that things remain consistent throughout the given series.

Usually it's just throughout the given episode.

One of the supporting characters who was being built as a sort of vague antagonist just up and vanishes.

Like, literally we go to commercial and the dude is GONE. No word is spoken of him again, though I think he pokes his head out on the space ship at the very end. It's like they cut the entire scene where he got injured and taken away, and then no one mentioned that happened.

I suspect he's put in enough research to not explicitly ignore or discount something like I, Davros. Cardiff does have a fairly active relationship with Big Finish that is only growing. We're at the point where the audios and show are explicitly the same continuity, with characters crossing back and forth. Only some of the novels, comics, and loosely connected spinoffs are being ignored, or at least not directly considered.

Is there any info on how Big Finish finally got the rights to use stuff from the new series? I remember for years there was supposedly the legal barrier between them, so they had stuff like making obvious references to the Ninth Doctor and the Time War but couldn't explicitly state them as such... did their old licensing contract expire and their new one just included the new series, or was there anything more complicated?

Nothing announced but it looks like BBC Worldwide is testing the waters with ancillary characters like they did with Bernice Summerfield before giving Big Finish the rights to Classic Who. The contracts are still separate, buy if Big Finish delivers their usual level of work I'm sure the new series rights will be expanded.

It would make things easier if there was a copy of their licence arrangement out there to read, as we don't actually know the specifics of the licence.
They've slowly been creeping towards revival series stuff for a few years now - probably to see how viable it is. It was probably helped with the projects that occured during the 50th anniversary involving official cross-overs between the two.

Diabolik900

Are we sure that they don't have full rights to the new series at this point? Maybe they just can't get any of the actors yet. Eccleston is unlikely to ever do it. Tennant and Smith will probably do it eventually, but they both have busy careers and might want some time away from the franchise before going back for this kind of thing.

Chairman Capone
Dec 17, 2008

I can't imagine they don't have full rights to the new season, I mean they're doing the four classic Doctor/new monster stories, they're doing River Song stories, other than the new Doctors themselves (who like Diabolik said are unlikely to be available at the moment) it seems pretty well integrated.

Before Night of the Doctor, before all the New Series properties coming to audio, a case could have been made putting the audios solely in the realm of supplementary media like books and comics. At this point, though, it'd be harder to argue that they don't take place in the same continuity.

I mean, Moffatt loves River Song - she's a major companion from the new series and almost as important as the Doctor himself in the past couple years' worth of stories (for better or worse). If he's giving Big Finish (mostly) free reign with her, I'd be surprised if he completely ignored their contributions to the franchise. Remember, everything still has to go through Cardiff. If they didn't give a poo poo, they wouldn't bother growing the relationship further.

I don't expect 9, 10, 11, and 12 to join the monthly range, but the model of a box set recorded over 2-3 days seems to be working really well for Big Finish and the actors who take part in them. It'd be hard to argue that actors like David Tennant and Matt Smith wouldn't do it. I mean, if David Tennant has a week to record the audio book for How To Train Your Dragon, why wouldn't he pop in for a session?

Because actors don't like to be typecast/pigeonholed. I'm sure that Tennant (and probably Smith) will eventually do it, but I wouldn't be shocked if they want some time away first.

Well, BF's The Churchill Years is going to have Churchill tell stories of 9, 10, and 11 (they're even on the cover). My guess is they're just waiting for scripts to be commissioned and actors' availability. Tennant's filming "AKA Jessica Jones" and a load of other stuff, so it's probably hard for him to get a week off (if they go the route of a box set or a series on single audios).

Tim Burns Effect

It should also be considered that because such a large amount of time passes between audios being recorded and announced (much less actually released), for all we know they might have already recorded some 10th Doctor stories by now.

I'm loving the idea behind Churchill Years because Ian McNeice guest-starred in an episode of the 8th Doctor Adventures in 2007 and in the behind the scenes interviews he talks about how much he would love to be on the TV show. Now he's come full circle :allears:

My biggest problem with the Dalek episode ideas speculated on isn't revisiting Genesis, but them going to a Pre-Genesis Skaro. Much like Capaldi's idea of doing "Genesis of the Cybermen" it's already been done by Big FInish, and would put Moffat into a position of having to either use the BF concepts of those origin stories wholesale (and probably pay authors for rights) or blow out the BF continuity which he's professed to being a proponent of.

They already paid Marc Platt for Rise of the Cybermen.

It was basically for that scene where Ten finds that Cyberman whose emotional inhibitor was switched off and it was talking about her upcoming wedding. He wanted something similar to the Yvonne Hartley scene in Spare Parts. That scene was basically the impetus for Rise/Age.

I think part of that was costume choice. They were just big clink clank robots, more than the older cybermen ever were. Part of that of course was necessity, older Cybermen were made with less advanced materials and stuff...but when you get down to it, Old School Cybermen and Old School Robot enemies looked VERY different. They were made different.

There was no such distinction with the Cybusmen and that trend has sadly followed.

I'd have loved to of seen some of those prototype designs and concept art done in live action. Then again maybe Doctor Who couldn't have pulled it off at their budget. Who knows

I'm wondering what would be more appealing to watch, an adaptation of an audio that's very similar to what we've got, or one that's very different.

I haven't listened to any audios, but I read people's reviews around here, and I feel like a straight Twelve adaptation of Spare Parts might falter because they're probably the two most different Doctors there have been. Again I don't know how Spare Parts really goes, but I feel like Twelve wouldn't just behave differently in the same story as Five, he'd demand a very different tone because of who he is. In contrast, I'm sure Twelve would match very well with a straight adaptation of a Six story.

So Skaro is definitely in the trailers, as is Misty interacting with the Daleks, and the crack in time allowing Time War daleks onto Skaro, so if seems all the leaks about the first two parter rewriting Genesis are true. I mean, you do realize what a tremendously prejudiced reading of Moffat's motivations this is, apart from everything else.

I mean, to declare that any time-travel story that revisits past stories and alters them, or toys with the idea of altering them, is somehow an egotistical act of "leaving a mark" is kinda bizarre.
