I'm amazed at Tinsley's continued inability to understand that he's the rear end in a top hat in this scenario. You give her $3, let her punch some numbers on a keypad, and give you three pennies. The only reason you would give extra pennies is if you want to feel smug when the cashier is confused at receiving such an unusual amount of money.

A lot of cashiers prefer have more pennies so the next time they have to break a twenty they have change available. People who use it as an opportunity to lord their arithmetic skills over someone who didn't even know they were playing the game is an rear end in a top hat.
