Yeah, I uninstalled heavenstrike and bought FFTactics screw IAP and very heavy RNG. I'd prefer Disgaea, but no dice except ancient emulator stuff.

I'll report on chess hack tomorrow , but for now hearthstone it is. I drunkenly spent more on it than any game, so I guess I'm in it for the long haul. It's not too bad.

I've been playing loads of mazebert td, but I'm getting burnt out on how long rounds can last, especially combined with how reliant you are on the rng to keep your carry strong.

Any other good td games that are similar (fewer towers, predetermined creep lanes)? I don't mind paying, I'm flush with survey credit.

Yeah there's nothing like spending 10 minutes on a level then getting a phone call, losing focus and losing all progress.

Also yeah the music thing is kind of dumb.

Honestly that is my primary Lady sapphira usage. Eat pure damage you armor gaining rear end in a top hat.

Gems of War arena infoburp:

I've found the best luck with going for straight/cheap hitters (targetting is a bonus) and taking out threat cards straight away - this usually means the glass cannon in position 3 (or the rock worm, dear lord the rock worm).

Once you've made your picks, it's best to exit out of the arena with the cross button and pick a new home kingdom to make the most of your mana (I.E. if your main hitter is a certain colour, or something is 8 mana to activate, pick a colour or two to get bonus mana on, for example if I've scooped up an rockworm and equip a black dagger I'll choose broken spire so both can activate on two matches instead of three). You can exit out of arena ONCE PICKING IS COMPLETE (never do it mid way or it'll pick for you) without penalty; just pick Arena and you'll be returned to where you were.

Changing kingdoms costs 50g, but it's worth it to give you a better shot at the 1500g.

Obviously try and cover your colours well (if you don't have a generator) by making use of your weapon swap. I like to use either the black dagger with a blue bonus, or the spellbook without a bonus so I can fill up other creatures on demand. Don't discount a boosted crude club either - every match being a +5 punch in the face for their leader is nice and handy if you'd like to hand them turns matching colours they don't have and chip away at their leader.

Usually it's best to chuck your hero in first place as he's usually the best at eating damage and not being that important, unless you have a legendary weapon or other ideas, in which case you don't need to read this anyway.

Here are some quick lists (shamelessly stolen from some chap on their forums here) to help with arena and kingdom selection:

Top Common Picks
• Goblin - nb: no need to boost green if this guy is your first pick.
• Reaver
• Rock Worm - nb: you shoud boost brown if you're using this one, can pick another brown/other colour if you're feeling frisky
• Satyr
• Pride Hunter

Top Rare Picks
• Boar Rider
• Frost Giant
• Owlbear
• Vampire Lord
• Warlock
• Wolf Knight

Top Ultra Picks
• Herd Master

Mid Common Picks
• Centaur Scout
• Musketeer
• Scale Guard *Becomes top tier when paired with poison spreading troops, ability will do 12 damage for 7 cost*
• Skeleton
• Golem
• Warhound
• Lance Knight

Mid Rare Picks
• Alchemist
• Banshee
• Bombardier
• Dark Maiden * Top tier when paired with Scale Guard*
• Dwarf Lord
• Deep Borer
• Valkyrie
• Archon Statue *Top tier after taking 1 point of health damage, deals 13 damage*
• Paladin *Becomes low tier after losing some armor, use at your own risk*
• Templar
• Goblin Shaman * Top tier if common draft was Goblin, Satyr, Reaver or you want to use a green hero weapon*
• Night Terror
• Wight

• Sabertooth Lion * Top tier after first ability kill*

Mid Ultra Picks

Kingdom Bonus List

Adana: Yellow/Red
Broken Tower: Blue/Brown
Dominion Fields: Purple/Yellow
Forest of Thorns: Green
Ghulvania : Red/Purple
Karakoth: Purple
Khaziel: Brown
Khetar: Purple/Blue
Mist of Scales: Blue/Red
Pan’s Vale: Yellow/Green
Pridelands: Red
Swords Edge: Blue/Yellow
Whitehelm: Yellow
Zaejin: Green/Brown
Zul’Kari: Purple/Green

nb I think the list is missing Dire Wolf and Druid - the former is a pain in the arse to fit into a team and therefore is a situational 'mid' for me, and the latter is a pain in the arse to fight AGAINST but does good damage and so is top/mid.

I'm not super far in and it's finally getting halfway difficult, and there's some iffy mechanics showing up (like gear breaking when your guys go down, unless you buy fancy super gear... and good luck not having guys die, their AI is not so good) but overall it's fun and the energy and recovery mechanics aren't too punishing.

Also for the love of god do not use rock worm if your opponent has a rock worm until they use their ability first. The first skill is unlikely to chain where as the second skill is very likely to chain. I took about 5 uses in a row to learn that lesson. Lady Saphirra - Whitehelm W/B
A very strong carry that does true damage and boosts her attack and health.

Atlanta - Divinion Plains Y/P
Massive team damage, but expensive to charge. High attack if Saphirra gets knocked out.

Raven - Mist of Scales R/U
10 damage, and returns 9 mana if it does a killing blow.

This is my team with the addition of Barbearius, but he was a special reward from a weekly event. Fill in with your hero with a green weapon, and you'll do fine. Make Whitehelm your kingdom to boost yellow mana and ride Saphirra to victory.

This isn't the only combination that will work, but the required kingdoms are close to the starting point, so its an easy team for new players to get. Barbearius on red/green is a great mana generator for Saphirra, since his damage is boosted by destroying brown gems. If you have an Alchemist (R/B) you can use his ability to generate lots of yellow too. Adana is a good kingdom as well.

Yeah, I put a note at the bottom that a couple of cards were missing - presumably those most recently added like Druid and Dire Wolf. I put it as top/mid - the damage is bloody strong, but the random nature coupled with the cost doesn't give me a reliable way of putting a threat card down quickly. It is a pain in the tits to be against though :)

On the subject of teams, I've had a lot of fun in pvp with my cheap team of lame arses - I'm using a hero with either black dagger, deepstone or the tome of wizardry, a wolf knight, a dark maiden and either a tyri or a serpent (dictating which hero weapon to use) and broken spire as home. It's a really cheap team with no legendaries and provided you can get the poison out quickly and match carefully / use your explodes and removal carefully the wolf knight will cheerfully rip apart their fancy pants leg-end cards before they can fart skulls everywhere. I've won the majority of my pvp matches with it (rank 1 with a couple of losses, one against a double druid team and some astoundingly tosspot cascades) and it's fun to carefully plan your moves with the removal and exploders.

However, the semi-randomised levels, coupled with the fact that the birds are far more specialised, has already stopped me playing.

Player skill can be completely negated by the random starting bird selection and role set-ups. It's common for a level to start for instance with a wood and stone tower with a base of ice close to the player and stone on the other side. If your opening hand doesn't have a bluebird and the grey looper, then you may as well quit, because the red guys war cry won't move the base, the yellow gut can't do enough damage to the top, and the egg bomber can't get high enough to stop an egg on it. If you do have a bluebird and a looper, it's an easy level, but if you don't then it's impossible unless you've used a spell.

Crap design, which is a shame as the graphics are gorgeous.

We made a small game. Mobile gaming is fascinating, and we wanted to take part in it. What better way to dive right in?

Chess Hack is now on beta in Google Play. Beta version is ad free and has all the achievements available. It's still missing some buttons on the main screen but other than that, it's a complete experience. Join the beta: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.kakku.chesshack

Chess Hack is a combination of chess and roguelike dungeon crawling. Get to the bottom of dungeon and capture the opponents king to win. There's three game modes which play quite differently, and going for achievements can change the experience rather significantly.

We used Unity to build the game. It let us create a web version (which unfortunately ceased to work on Chrome) and get preliminary feedback. It also made testing easier. We went for an early prototype to see if the game was fun at all. I was responsible for setting the level paratemers. While I think the core concept was solid, I accidentally made the game much too hard. Now it should be pretty well balanced for a fun experience on each difficulty level and game type. The early feedback made us add a couple navigational helps.

For graphics and sound we wanted a clear, consistent style. For the next project this part needs to be planned out much more clearly. Even simple 2d takes a lot of time if you want it to look halfway decent. UI worked surprisingly well for a touch device, even on a smaller phone screen. Pinch zooming helps quite a bit.

I'd be happy to answer questions about developing the game. You're also welcome to follow us on Facebook; we're about to start the next game project soon. And of course all feedback is welcome.

Worked for me. Unfortunately it doesn't run well on my aging GS3, which is somewhat surprising because the graphics aren't too impressive. It has weird scrolling behavior, I end up overshooting by a good amount.

Overall it's pretty underwhelming. It doesn't feel like a game. The goal seems to be "keep moving toward these doors on these huge maps", and that's it. Maybe there's more to it if I had played more than a level or two but I was bored enough to quit at that point. Also the scenery was pretty bland.

I had a couple ideas to improve it, like making the maps smaller and using fewer, more interesting enemies that are only loosely based on chess, but I think the end result of that would actually turn out to be Crypt of the Necrodancer. So that wouldn't be too helpful. Unless you want to make a clone/pseudoclone of that, I guess, which might not be a bad thing?

I thought there was an email to send criticism to on that beta page but I don't see it any more, so sorry if posting it here isn't the desired venue.

The scrolling problem is known and we're working on it. As for the game, it's strictly limited to chess pieces as a design choice. The only thing you missed were stronger pieces on lower levels.

Thank you for your feedback. All of it is welcome, even and especially negative. How otherwise would we know what should be improved?
