I know we bitch about how the thread unfairly compares good cartoonists to Rall or Muir after one dodgy cartoon, but did we ever decide if it was fair to compare Muir and Rall?

Have some Clovis, on the house! August 6th was Jamaican Independance Day. It's 51 years since they broke away from the UK. Clovis likes Barbados so much WHY HIM NUH MOVE THERE?! Jamaican police were really proud of seizing 11 weapons in a recent operation. No one else is impressed. Also Clovis weighed in on Cecil the Lion. Its The White Man and African Leader's fault (but we already knew that).

We're all overly inured to racism for shock value in humor, and disinclined to take it seriously as a result. Jarlsberg is so jokey it's easier to forget that he's just as much of a hateful, bigoted poo poo as he comes across; there will never be any halfhearted apologies or attempts to real it back in the name of saving face like you get with a lot of other 'edgy' comics who deal in the same bullshit.

MariusLecter posted:"Axe" is a perfectly cromulent word. Just in case anyone was curious, Oxford English Goddamn Dictionary posted:The original long į gave regularly the Middle English (Kentish) ōxi ; but elsewhere was shortened before the two consonants, giving Middle English a , and, in some dialects, e . The result of these vowel changes, and of the Old English metathesis asc- , acs- , was that Middle English had the types ōx , ax , ex , ask , esk , ash , esh , rear end , ess . The true representative of the orig. įscian was the s.w. and w.midl. ash , esh , also written esse (compare ęsce ash n.1, węsc(e)an wash n.), now quite lost. Acsian, axian, survived inax, down to nearly 1600 the regular literary form, and still used everywhere in midl. and southern dialects, though supplanted in standard English by ask, originally the northern form. Already in 15th cent. the latter was reduced dialectally to asse, past tense ast, still current dialectally The short of it is that "axe" was an older English pronunciation that was preserved longest in the dialects that colonized the American South and that's where the slaves picked it up. And of course, the descendants of those colonizers will say that using "axe" for "ask" is a result of illiteracy and "lazy tongues" (I wish I were making that up).
