I kinda skipped the whole awkward sex discussion with my parents at a youngish age because they left a copy of this out and my insatiable curiosity took care of the rest. Which was actually probably pretty fortunate as I went to a Catholic High School and the sex ed was basically 'lol love is like giving a gift to someone so pre marital sex is like re-gifting and nobody wants a present that has been opened before, am i rite?' And also one year the principal took the female half of the student body and basically told us to stop dressing like sluts. I should note we had a uniform. You don't get to complain that our low rise pants are too short if those are the goddamn pants you sell us. Ugh anyway sex ed is important because we don't all have parents who would surreptitiously leave around medical software for our benefit. ,

I think one of the pieces of American sex-ed that got overlooked was the tendency to ignore special education/individuals with intellectual disabilities. I've worked in a psychiatric hospital for teens for several years and we've had several kids come through that have gotten in legal trouble for sexually acting out. These kids are 16,17,18 years old but cognitively are closer to 5 or 6 so people assume they don't need any education. Meanwhile they get themselves arrested because nobody ever told taught them how to safely control their feelings.

My wife works in a school for kids with severe autism and other disabilities and was shocked at the lack of sex ed in a place where these hormone filled kids that just don't understand are acting out sexually. She started an initiative to create curriculum for a specialized sex ed class and was basically told by higher ups at the school that it was inappropriate and "They tend to figure these things out by themselves" and "They are incapable of understanding what you're trying to teach them." She's the head of the Behavior department at a school which pretty much ignores applied behavior analysis so she was just completely dismissed by an executive with no clinical training and little familiarity with people with these conditions.

The biggest obstacle to good sexual education tends to be on "moral" grounds, so it doesn't really matter how qualified the teacher is because it's a subject that some people just don't want being taught.

Most of these kids are non-verbal and when they want to go to the bathroom they show a card with a picture of a toilet on it, and a staff member will take them to the toilet. The school is a residential school so the kids also live in group homes managed by the school staff, so the cards are their method of communication in school and at home. She was proposing a new card so the kid can ask for private time so they can jack off in peace and have the rest of the kids in the school/home be uninvolved, just like they do with going to the bathroom, as if it's a regular bodily function. The kids were able to be taught that when they feel like they need to go to the bathroom they know enough to get the toilet card out and find a staff member. The same could be taught for when they get a boner they can't stop paying attention to, but the school administrators found the whole idea inappropriate and not realistic.

That and the sexual behaviors of people with dementia and alzheimer's are serious issues, old people randomly sexually assault each other because they not longer have the mental faculties to understand basic consent. As a society we don't do well with mental issues however.

That's also one of the things people take for granted with that population. A simple "just go to the bathroom" doesn't always make sense so you pretty much have to do a lot of teaching and coaching, breaking everything down to simple steps. That's not even including the complexities of consent and interpersonal relationships.

I had to talk to a 3rd grader about outside time and alone time. Never give your kids sweatpants, especially if they are special needs. I suggest that all residential facilities give their patients skinny jeans to solve this problem.

I grew up in Jeb Bush era Florida. My sex ed class was pretty bad. The tape thing Oliver showed was used in my class, and we were told condoms are useless. Sex was only spoken of positively when referring to a man-woman monogamous married relationship.

I was taught that all gay sex involved shoving lightbulbs or arms (it made sure to emphasise that most did it up to the elbow) up your partners rear end before dying of AIDS. This included lesbians. The standard "condoms are useless" bullshit applied as well.

Fun Sex Ed Story: In seventh grade we finally got a week of education about Puberty and How Our Bodies Work. Girls got a female-focused talk in fifth grade and they just had us watch Cool Runnings a bunch that year. Finally, we get sex ed in seventh grade! Woo! Except the speaker they had planned couldn't make it or something (PTA boards are fun for gossip) and so the youngest male science teacher was stuck explaining to us how things work. This included the super fun and super awkward "I can tell you contraception exists but I can't talk about it, please don't ask me." One kid raises his hand and asks if Sex Feels Good. And my science teacher just stammers and stumbles and finally mumbles "Well God wants us to have lots of babies, so of course he made it feel amazing."

Its odd that anybody here expects a level of sophistication and nuance from sex ed that doesn't exist in any subject taught in the sixth grade. "As an adult, I feel my sex education was wholly inadequate." Well, no poo poo. For sixth grade history we built pyramids out of sugar cubes for our final project on ancient Egypt. It's amazing how bad abstinence only sex ed is vs the ladder which is what I had which ended being like 2 weeks of sex ed when I was in 7th grade, and it was pretty cool. We even did the question box where the teacher answered any question you dropped in the box so it was anonymous and honest. Also funny because kids came up with absurd question to try and break the teacher but at least you learned. gently caress me how and when did you end up learning all of things you need to konw about sex florida men.

Since I guess we're giving accounts, my memories of school sex education in the UK were that around the age of 10/11 they told us where babies came from and we watched a probably not overly graphic video of a birth, and the whole pregnancy process. Not too much detail on sex, just the biological basics. One girl apparently fainted and a couple of kids with very religious backgrounds sat it out. We got a lot of talk about puberty throughout the years. (I'm always legit freaked out by old stories of times where women just didn't talk about periods and how much it freaked out teenagers when it happened) One teacher showed the old condom on the banana thing. Then around age 15 they split the classes by gender and had an outside specialist teacher come in and give a detailed presentation about STDs (complete with horrifying photos) and different methods of protection and general genital information. So yeah, all these anectdotes from America are shocking to me.
