If you enjoyed alternating between seething and laughing throughout this episode, check out "An Honest Liar" on Netflix. A decent portion is devoted to James Randi's takedown of one of the bigger televangelists in the 80s.

I've known about this bullshit for years, it's nice to see it brought to light on HBO. It is absolutely disgusting and the fact that it is legal in this country just makes me loving sick. That being said, I am sending $20 to Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption in the hopes that it will cure my Devil Lupus. #notmychristian

I've seen some glimpses of televangelists while messing around with the TV and assumed they'd be at least a bit off-kilter, but I never knew they were that blatantly exploitative. All that "seed" poo poo is just amazingly transparent in how scummy it is, especially when they go out of their way to make it absolutely clear that their aim is to target the financially downtrodden.

Larry Wilmore did do a few bits a few weeks back mocking the Dollar guy. I'm also getting a Colbert SuperPAC vibe from this. Nonetheless, this was in a few months making and Oliver is the best guy to pull off a "let's start a mock church" without coming off as a punchable atheist.

I thought the actual post-establishment church bit fell a bit flat, but the correspondence with Mr Tilton and the checklist of becoming a church made up for it.

TurboFlamingChicken posted:Oral Roberts: http://content.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1677098,00.html Actually, because of the tax laws I bet he'll let the church run for a couple months before dissolving it entirely, the stated rules saying that upon the dissolution of the church all assets will be released to MSF so legally there's no grounds for the IRS to dick with them. quote:The church is now open to the public and has its own site. On it, Oliver encourages people to send cash, check or money orders to a New York PO box. The fine print states that should the church choose to wind down and dissolve in the future, “any assets belonging to the Church at that time will be distributed to Doctors Without Borders, a non-profit charitable organization that is tax-exempt under § 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (EIN: 13-3433452) and which provides emergency medical aid in places where it is needed most”.

As his usual obnoxious correspondent, he was at risk because he could not afford to get arrested for anything — deportation loomed. So when he wandered into a restricted area and was pursued by security, he sought refuge among some veterans invited by pro-military politicians. The one who helped Mr. Oliver hide out was a female vet, Kate Norley. He was grateful, took down her email and married her three years later.

Let me see if I remember this correctly off the top of my head (don't take it as gospel, wait for someone to confirm): Kate was a...combat medic, I think? Anyway, she was an Army vet, and the GOP asked her and some other members of her unit to speak at the 2008 RNC as part of their SUPPORT ARE TROOPS routine. Oliver happens to be there doing a remote, and when the organizers get wind of this, they order security to physically escort him and his crew out. At one point, they have a close call that sends Oliver and his team booking through the upper floors of the hotel, knocking on doors, looking for a place to hide. One of the doors they knocked on was Kate's room, and the rest was history. Interestingly enough, John once told David Letterman that Kate doesn't find him all that funny. Must've married him for his looks. EDIT: Looks like I was beaten...but mostly right, at least! DivisionPost fucked around with this message at 04:35 on Aug 18, 2015 |
