Asimo posted:I can kiiind of forgive lockboxes. It's still gambling bullshit but everything can be resold on the exchange and the boxes themselves persist and aren't in short supply even months after they've stopped dropping if you really felt the urge to open them. The contents have improved a lot over the years too, overall. And what's great is that it lets anyone with a brain make obscene in game profits just by buying the limited time promo packs on the exchange when they're available and cheap, then waiting a month and a half and selling them at a big markup to the gambling addicts. And using the proceeds to buy up whatever the next limited run poo poo is. On and on forever. So it's a lovely mechanic for compulsive gamblers and people who don't really pay attention, but an excellent feature for people in the game who want to profit from them. hakimashou fucked around with this message at 14:35 on Aug 17, 2015 |

The sperg having a fit in the trading channel and saying he had reported STO to the FBI for being an illegal game and breaking the lottery law was reddit user JustTray. He spent 200 dollars on zen and did not win a ship. He made a thread on reddit about how his bank's (bank of America) lawyers are going to sort it out with cryptic. "I'm just going to dispute the charges and let my bank's lawyers deal with the rest. When they shine a light on this operation, with the facts I've given, well, I like their chances. At a minimum I'll get my money back, and if they want to get pissy, which I doubt, they'll turn my account off. I mean, if you want the honest truth. Of course I don't want to have to sue anybody, but those aren't my only options. And they aren't Cryptic's either. Besides, this has 'class-action lawsuit' written all over it, not something an individual should try to battle. And again your analogy to the casino is funny because online gambling is illegal in my country, and all transactions are blocked to any company operating it." https://www.reddit.com/r/sto/comments/3gz3v6/opened_100_boxes_and/

Lagomorphic posted:The odds of opening that many boxes without getting a ship is about 1:24,000. The interesting thing is that the rate we're usually expected to get 'rare' drops in any game is usually far worse than that. So in a sense, this guy just got his Destiny Hawkmoon/WoW Artha's sword/whatever in the form of a long unbroken string of lockbox duds. Measured like that, it's almost mundane. He's probably going to experience several strings of bad luck as bad or worse than that in MMOs if he continues to play them. Kind of reminds me of the last great idiot-thing I did in an MMO. There was some long-rear end process to get a thing that let you turn into a dragon and give people rides in WoW, and I decided I'd go for it. I think I might have tried for about 4 weeks worth of time, and at one point, made the mistake of comparing my progress to the 'expected' timeline. I think I had doubled it by the time I decided to unsub (again). I don't know. I always am on the fence when it comes to these yahoos. On the one hand, yeah, a normally developed person should be able to see that it's a scam and when you get scammed you can't then get outraged. But on the other hand, if not for childish outrage, nothing would get done. We'd just all hang out letting the state oppress us. In other words. Nazi germany. There's no source for this, it's just parody.

I've always tried very hard to control the price of master keys by buying out under-cutters. then alternating prices so it looks like people are trying to get more keys than the rest. They get so entrenched or entranced on clicking "buy," that they don't realize I'm slowly rising the price to near or even more than what it was when it was stagnant and no one was buying keys.

It doesn't work, because it's never been implemented correctly. For some reason, corruption undermines its high ideals. Also, I'm a moral person, so I rip people off so that other people don't rip them off even more. I'm like Robin Hood, except if he had an awesome house, and spent all his cash on sick block parties and home theater systems. Edit: I have a ton of respect for people who waste their irreplaceable time to provide the raw materials to make me rich.

Just got one of those fun emails on one of my contra-farming accounts. Doesn't help me much, but nice I guess. All of the characters were pre-60, so there's a possibility that may be a factor. The reward I got in the promotions tab was two separate things, a ship and a booster to level 60 from 50 with any excess going into spec points. My KDF did not have a ship they could claim, but could claim the booster, which becomes immediately bound to your character who claims it. It's O.K. The base systems are there, shooting things in air and ground have few problems and feel decent. The biggest problems have come with raising the level cap, obsoleting the previous top end and the issues inherent in the possibility of having a Level 40 ship at 60 with nowhere to go, ship-wise. Before that, even the upgrade system can be said to work decently. Being able to upgrade your stuff as you go is a decent thing and can be done for relatively cheap. R+D is also problematic. The encounters of the game seem to be getting faster, or perhaps 'more hectic'. Lots more stuff thrown about, lots more hazards and things, lots more firepower. Better than being bored? I don't know. It's hard for me to judge fairly, because I've been at this so long. So after a while everything becomes 'Meh'.

Ground never worked for me, but space seemed really great. The 2 parts of it that worked the best IMO were the cloaking/canon boat style of play, and the beam boat style, but with weird extra abilities that required you to occasionally face the enemy. Like torpedoes or the science stuff. If they could have figured out how to automate all the stuff that ends up automated by the 'hold spacebar' macro that everyone here uses (like, BOFFs that automatically used their abilities whenever relevant, or could be set to autofire, and got extra copies from having buddies with similar, complimentary abilities), then, at least the (space) bar to pass in order to be competent in a challenge would be a little lower (man, I have to say, I'm thrilled with that pun. Is that like a quad entendre?). The other thing missing, I think, is some kind of reason to pay attention to teammates. Other than just watching which way they go and following them so you can all FAW together. I'd like it if there was some kind of pool of science-magic stuff that you could use to help each other during a fight. Like somebody get's put on plasma fire ,and instead of just hitting their own 'clear bullshit off me' button, you have to clear the bullshit off them with giant fire extinguisher attachment to your deflector dish that covers space in white foam for an entire parsec in front of you. Or if somebody is debuffed, you could aim a disco beam of rainbow and catchy music at them to boost morale and drop the debuff. Or fireworks that repair your hull. Every space instance should be like Drozana during mardis gras.

There ARE a few moves that are other-only rather than just self or self-and-ally; Extend Shields comes to mind. No one uses them these days because why would you beyond being new and lacking knowledge? That's another thing. This game, like most MMOs, is fairly obtuse about things. I wouldn't say that. They're throwing enough stuff around as is and hell, too many things hurts the engine and makes it chug, and no one benefits-see the mess with Command Powers.
