I accept that Goku isn't actually a bad dad, but choose to believe he is because I find it funny. I will continue to post Goku is a bad dad in internet discussions about DBZ.

I think the problem is the show isn't really aware of how weird Goku comes off. Like he has the Cell scenes, the completely inexplicable wife and children and the general unawareness of anything unrelating to punchmans, but then it still writes scenes where he's this wholesome family guy everyone loves even though this never seems to be the case at any other time. I mean seriously, show me one scene in the entire show where he and Chi Chi have the slightest bit of chemistry and they actually have a reason to care about each other, it's just not there

Darko posted:- Goku's idiocy and disconnect with family makes perfect sense, since he had a "father" for like 4 years that taught him martial arts before he killed him by stepping on him, and grew up as a wild kid in the wildlands for the rest of his life. Vegeta aint much better, really, but still. The idea is that Goku has a good heart, but he's still going to always be that wild kid, and not fully "civilized." Huh, I never thought about it, and I know this is way overthinking things, but this is a lot like reactive attachment disorder. It's a rare thing, but if a child fails to form normal attachments with their caregivers during their first few years, for whatever reason - including abrupt separation - kids can develop this really, really awful disorder that's extremely difficult to treat and permanently, seriously fucks up their ability to have any kind of appropriate relationship with other humans. But, point is, there's two types. It can either present as inhibited form, or as disinhibited form. Disinhibited presents as "indiscriminate sociability, such as excessive familiarity with relative strangers", "poorly modulated peer interactions", "not having a discriminated, preferred attachment figure" (arguable, but I'd say Goku treats Roshi/Kami/King Kai as pretty interchangeable) "not checking back after venturing away from the caregiver", "lack of reticence with unfamiliar adults", "a willingness to go off with relative strangers", etc. In other words, Goku's actually just a pretty realistic representation of what a kid raised by wolves might actually act like.

In the manga, there isn't really a disconnect. Goku only barely acts different from the kid fishing with his tail that Bulma ran into, and is pretty much going to stay that character.

Krillin is sort of absurdly the winner of life. Yeah, he died a couple times but the end result is that he basically has a dream life while also being pretty much strong enough to effectively be a god in any other series.

The original Dragonball never got a run when I was a kid so I didn't see the honeymoon stuff, but that he never really changes from the preteen kid is kinda my point, which is that he's a perpetual manchild who just likes fighting that the plot occasionally pretends is a functional adult person

Since Dragon Ball Heroes has playable Kai characters, I was thinking of adding them to Parallels. The question is, do I call them "Kai" or "Shin"? Or "Shinjin", I guess, but that's too close to "Saiyan" for my liking. I'll probably stick with "Kai".
