For live action things, I personally find it less distracting reading subtitles. For anything animated or CG'd, I prefer dubs. The only care that I have with dubs, is that I'd rather a natural sounding flow, over stilted accuracy.

The worst attempt at localising stuff is things like the Polish lektor - a bored monotone voice saying the characters' dialogue, played over the footage, but with the background audio slightly muted. Here's an example (ignore the choice of film).

People in fights tend to make noises of effort that you can't really replicate on a dime. This is a problem in any language for any fight scene, I've only seen a few protracted fight scenes in anime or games that don't sound weird.

No VA vs. VA is basically the same argument as sub vs. dub, where it's the former wanting to keep that illusion that they're playing something cool instead of it being dumb all along

Like the peak days of this thread that FF6 was not silly and japanese anime

didn't one of the call of duty games have the entire plot outlined at the start in unsubbed russian, so if you knew russian you just knew the entire story and every single twist

In Training posted:

It's not a weeabo to care about the original direction of a work. There will always be a translation barrier of course, but the subtitles will always be the least obtrusive option.

Yes it is. "I want to hear this game just like they do in GLORIOUS NIPPON :japan:" is pretty dumb and lol if you think games made with a worldwide audience in mind have some sort of loving "original direction" priority for Japanese or any other language. You're approaching the territory of the FFXIV OF posters who bitch and moan that the English text isn't a literal word-for-word translation of the Japanese script.

The only reason to use subs instead of dubs is if the dub is completely phoned in and :effort: as hell. At that point it's less about sub vs dub and more about "wow the English VAs for Eternal Sonata are even worse than the gameplay itself why does this little midget girl speak like a retarded cowboy."

Sakurazuka
Jan 24, 2004

NANI?

Some people prefer to hear things in the original language, some people prefer it in a language they understand without being distracted by subtitles. This is a completely subjective thing and neither side is inherently right or wrong.

I wish someone would pay me for every time I've had to listen to subs vs dubs in the past twenty years, I could buy my own loving ADR studio.

It's not a subjective thing when most of the time it's brought up, it's on a topic about the business of localization and "Why can't they just translate it without the english voices???" and objectively your game will fail if you're trying to reach beyond a very super niche group.
