Rick might be a genius, but he's used to all the crazy poo poo he experiences/causes constantly. Morty on the other hand is forced to reevaluate his perception of reality all the time which might give him an edge in terms of lateral thinking.

Hell, perhaps he was off researching with Evil Morty for fifteen years, hence his cryptic comment to end that S1 episode.
