MGS1 is like 8 bucks through PSN and it is legit the best game that ever came out on PS1. It is worth playing through, some people will say the controls haven't aged well but it's really still a lot of fun if you don't go into it with ridiculous expectations. If you've got time to kill between now and TPP being released, I would say buy and play MGS1, and watch an LP of MGS3, at the very least. You can spend 10 minutes reading about Peace Walker on the wiki and get what you need to know, story-wise.
