Checking out Whoracle though, and it's pretty good. Not what I was looking for but still.

Already quite familiar with Killswitch, At The Gates, and Scar Symmetry. Generally I'm looking for more obscure or second-string recs because I've mined the big stuff already. Scar Symmetry is right on point for what I'm after though. Thanks for reminding me that they exist.

M-A says they broke up in 2012. A pity, they were good. Gorod are the only modern tech death band I'd put on par with Martyr in that specific style of tech death, and even then they went downhill after Leading Vision.

A page or so late, but I feel like the best Motorhead Album is Bastards. it has good solid production and includes all the archetypes of Motorhead songs - fast songs, bluesy songs, slow and heavy songs. The whole album is solid, too, which is a rarity. Its also one of the few albums they did as a 4 piece.

If you wanted a good place to start, thats what I would suggest.

Highlights:
Death or Glory (this song, to me at least, is the perfect Motorhead song, gently caress Ace of Spades.)
On your feet or on your knees
Bad woman
Lost in the Ozone
Born to Raise hell
Liar
Burner

its also a 90s album. The band consider it one of their best works too.

Martyr is great. Warp Zone was some of the first death metal I heard, and it took me quite a while to wrap my head around it. There's nothing quite like it, with the atmosphere of brooding tension built through sharp instrumentation and every-changing contrasts.

Not quite the same thing, but I'm also a fan of their friends in Capharnaum - especially "Reality Only Fantasized" and "Plague of Spirits." They were friends with Martyr back in the late 90s. This friendship also spawned the band Gargamel, the Legend of Zelda symph-black metal one...

Don't forget Don't Let Daddy Kiss Me, which is just :wtc:

I have a soft spot for Overnight Sensation. I Don't Believe A Word is a decent ballad-ish tune, Civil War is their heaviest song by a mile and basically sounds like old Discharge, and Eat The Gun is hilariously stupid.

I did say Highlights :P

Overnight sensation has some great songs too (title track is the best of them.) Motorhead have heaps of great songs, just not that many on any single album. Bastards and possibly Inferno have a decent ratio though (and OS now that you point it out)

Kingdom of the Worm is a pretty heavy song, from one of the more recent albums.

But yeah the last 3 albums have been pretty much Motorhead by Numbers and arent worth listening to when they have such better stuff in their back catalog.

Focus your Orochi.
Are there any modern day bands that have the same sound and feel as classic 80s heavy metal like Savatage (particularly Hall of the Mountain King) and Dio or is the market for that sort of thing just non existent? I would also be open to hearing lesser known/underrated bands from that era. I think it's more the vocals than anything that do it for me.

I guess it kinda depends on which bands you're already familiar with. Is it just the vocal style you're after because that might be hard to find. There's lots of cool 80s bands kicking around though and newer ones too.

Upwards of Endtime is a newer (though sadly split-up band) that plays 80s style metal very well. Barbarian Wrath is doing a re-release of all their stuff on one album though. https://barbarianwrath.bandcamp.com/album/beyond-infinity

Then there's Omen of course, a classic 80s band.

Well I've gone on about him in this thread a few times, but if you want Dio-like vocals, Nils Patrik Johansson is your man.

Sadly not all the bands he sings in are very good, but Astral Doors have done some good poo poo.

Also, seconding White Wizzard. Shame about all the Spinal Tap horseshit drama around them, but I just read on their FB page they're (all two of them) making good progress recording a new album and "hope to have an upcoming single release very soon". Here's hoping it's any good.

And lastly I'm gonna use that WW song symbolic posted as a segue, and pimp Monument again, the current band of the vocalist Peter Ellis. They're more Iron Maiden worship than influenced by Savatage or Dio, but god drat if their debut EP and album aren't some of the best 80's style metal I've heard ever.

In Flames chat: Lunar Strain is a good if really weird album. There's an abundance of cool riffs and guitar work, strange folk interludes, a random song with a female vocalist, and lots of long instrumental passages. It's really ambitious for a first album but tried going in too many directions and suffers a bit for it. Overall still an enjoyable listen if you want to dive into their 90s stuff, but don't expect it to sound all that similar to The Jester Race.

New Amorphis coming out. I haven't followed them since Skyforger - started sounding a little too samey. This is pretty interesting though - I get a real Elegy mid-90's vibe with the riffs and folky plinking/flute, but it's still pretty "pop".

I mean, he was declared clinically dead for five minutes after he ODed back in 88 or 89. Then he escaped from the hospital and went back to someone's house (I think Slash's?) and shot up more heroin. Bless you Nikki Sixx.

Last year I read Lords of Chaos about the history of the black metal scene. It wasn't especially good, but doesn't have much competition and helped me get a background in how different bands relate to one another. Nergal's (Behemoth) autobiography is awaiting my attention but I'm hesitant to read it (don't meet your idols and all that).

While not metal the Anthony Kiedis biography is a great read. Basically in relapse throughout his entire life, even when the media thought he was clean (during Californication). It's hosed but such a good read. When your best friend dies of a overdose yet you keep using? Your brain is loving broken. Tales of Kiedis jonesing for a hit and traveling to shady areas of town -- when the band was super famous - and still getting poo poo.

It's called Scar Tissue.

Indeed it is, which reminds me (I don't think I mentioned it before):

If you guys don't read the Black Market on Stereogum, you're missing out on a lot of great poo poo--I found that Scythian record there. It's a bit too black metal focused sometimes, but they really do cover a wide variety of bands both in style and popularity, and the writing is much better than you'd find on Metal Injection or whatever. I've been listening through it at work every month and found a bunch of great albums just this summer.
