It's disputed that the damnatio ad bestias was ever performed int he colosseum. It's also disputed that it was used against christians. But they did use elephants occasionally. The macedonian greeks as well.

cebrail posted:It's disputed that the damnatio ad bestias was ever performed int he colosseum. It's also disputed that it was used against christians. Well this makes sense given the decline of North African forest elephant population during the Roman Empire and the length of time between the first encounters with elephants and the appearance and persecution of christians. Also wouldn't be surprised if Carthage used an elephant at some point. Either way though, it appears the execution-by-elephant map is incomplete. Speaking of elephant executions: It's politically loaded because it was created by the Vermilion Valley Dam, which was built in the 1950s as part of a multi-dam project to provide water and power for Los Angeles. Like pretty much every other dam, this reflected an ideological commitment to urban sprawl and irrigated farmland over the needs of the environment or the rights of indigenous people.

Well that's why I said at most. A lot of the time you'd just ban it altogether because it makes it way harder for people to do the payment under the table but the surrogacy aboveboard.

In France it was about to be legalized along with same sex marriage (which got legalized), but the government backed down because of opposition both from the anti-gay religious right and the anti-gmo/nuclear/science gone too far!!! left.
