That makes me wonder, assuming the torque:horsepower ratio to be similar in the SS United States, it should be producing more than a full mile-ton of torque.

if it was single shaft maybe, the wiki talks about 4 props so only 60khp per
also steam turbine so the rated rpm is gonna be far higher with an associated drop in torque

Horsepower is (torque x rpm)/5250

109000hp at 102rpm is 5.6 million lb-ft. Or 1062 lb-mile or .53 ton-mile

I've read somewhere that the Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 had a nasty issue in how it would always land wrong because of the transverse engine (e: it was more complicated than just bad weight balancing but I can't remember the details)

e: and of course I can't find any gif of the T16 jumping

...tbh it's probably radioactive and involves a floating airport. But hey, as long as we've got iron we can build biggerer blocks and turbocharge our supercharged turbos, right?

edit: Like I'm not even high right now and I'm still imagining, like, this fractal thing of turbines and exhaust lines and supercharger belts and literal tons per square inch of boost. Radial superchargers, pretty much.

Mother of God. I've just imagined a radial engine with a roots supercharger for every cylinder, between the cylinders. Then I though of a multi-row one. Then compound turbos.
