A simple google search of smoking by city turns up results from 2013. http://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/data_statistics/by_topic/adult_data/ AFAIK, the the CDC is pretty much the only publicly accountable source keeping tabs on such info. (I'm sure companies like Phillip Morris have their own marketing research, but for obvious reasons, they don't post it online.)

Since smoking rates have been dropping across the board, it is mostly likely anecdotal.

You're probably seeing a lot more people smoking because you're spending more time around people who smoke, and/or, you've started paying attention to people smoking, when you likely didn't care before. For example, if you go from working at a Starbucks to an office job, odds are the older office workers are more likely to smoke than college student barristas.

How stable has your life been over the the last two years? Any major changes in your life like a new job, new family members, or plans to get healthy? That might cloud your perception on smoking rates.

Thanks. I feel like I have like 10 posts ITT asking questions that can be answered with Google, but I honestly do try first and usually go to broad or just don't use simple terms that should be obvious.

Actually I didn't think about that stuff, but my life is different now from last year, working with larger teams and meeting way more people. I've also had more free time recently so I've been playing a lot of shows and I'm exposed to much more of a nightlife crowd, and even people that just bum one or two a week smoke when they're out drinking etc. It just kinda bums me out because smoking really did a number on my body and I'm not even that old, but I'm seeing people that look like they're 19 lighting up and I thought that was completely out of style. My generic google searches also told me that smoking is way down, but I'm seeing it everywhere - but you're right, I might just be subliminally looking for it to confirm a theory I had or something.

We think it's a shame that it's currently sitting in its case in a drawer. What's an attractive way to display the slide rule as part of the decor? My first idea was hanging it on hooks on the wall, but that seems a bit spartan, even for an engineer's home. Ideas?

I'd probably go with a shadow box of some sort. OctoberBlues' idea sounds great, too.

I'd probably also set the slide rule to something important to your grandfather, if there's any particular neat proofs or whatever you can show easily with a slide rule. I think e is particularly graceful on a slide rule but its been a long, long time since I've played with one.

Yes. You probably shouldn't have deleted all the data though, as if that was the first console you downloaded any games on, it would have a permanent licnese for them , and you could have included them in your listing while advertising it. EG if you bought say Super Meat Boy off XBLA and that was the first 360 you ever downloaded it to, that 360 would have Super Meat Boy for the next owner to play even with your profile gone.

WTF?
A few weeks back, my parents had a get-together and so used paper plates. At some of the places around the table, the sections of some plates appear to have left some sort of mark on the table. Is there anything they can use to repair this, short of refinishing the whole thing?

It's a little hard to see them, but there's two in this image; they're a little lighter than the rest of the table.

Believe it or not, this is one area where 4chan might be useful. The /hr/ board (high resolution) should have plenty of images of sufficient size that you can crop them to your specifications. Plus it's generally not full of porn, though they do absolutely love long threads of celebrity pictures, for some reason.

Not sure if there is an art questions thread or anything. I picked this up at a yardsale yesterday (I really just wanted the frame). The signature is "E Hesse" but I can't find anything about the artist. Mostly stuff about Eva Hesse who I don't think was alive when this portrait was made.

Any art history majors who may have heard of this artist?

Im glad someone mentioned the shadow box idea. There are a lot of cheap lovely looking shadow boxes available and finding a good one along with putting some serious thought into its layout will make all the difference in it looking amazing or utter poo poo.

I have a jug of white sangria in the fridge that just turned two weeks old. It smells fine. It looks fine. I was told a week ago that it was getting better with age.

I guess my question is, can it *hurt* me? The fruit looks fine, and it's been soaking in some pretty strong alcohol for a fortnight.

I'm fine with trying it and finding out if it tastes good or bad, but I'm just curious if something like this could have actually gone south to the point of food poisoning, considering there's fruit in there.

My question is about horror stories for DnD, I'd like to read something that is genuinely scary so I can crib ideas from it. Does anyone recommend anything? Or a place to look?

Also, how to set a mood with music, decorations, etc.

Consider reading /listening to transcripts of horror focused RPGs like Call of Cthulhu, and then modifying them to use d&d mechanics and monsters instead

As someone who has artists in the family, I'd suggest asking around local artist groups or something. Plenty of people sell paintings who aren't even nearly famous enough for random internet people to recognise their names, art history majors or not.

It's unlikely, alcohol has really strong antibacterial properties. 99% of the bacteria that were present in the fruit were most likely killed by being dunked in Sangria. And after two weeks, I doubt that anything that survived the initial bacterial deci-decimation has evolved enough to cause you're body too much trouble.

That's looks like a gecko. They're probably at the top of the list of wild animals you want to find in your house.

They mostly eat bugs, and they are perfectly harmless to humans. They're not venomous, they don't sting, and I've never heard of anyone being bitten by one. If you found one in your bathroom, then that's basically free pest control. They eat ants, roaches, silverfish, spiders, termites and whatever else might show up in your bathroom.

I've got one in my bathroom. Sometimes it has trouble climbing out of the sink, so I put down a paper towel so it can climb out.

I want to run a cable from one room to another, and it needs to cross in front of a door. My plan is just to run it up one side of the door and down the other (so no one trips on it). Given that I'm renting and therefore can't screw hooks into the wall or anything, how can I stick it up there? I've got Blu-Tack holding it there at the moment, but it looks like it might fall down pretty easily.

These things. I have no idea what they're called, but your hardware store should have them. Pictured is both one in-use (has been sitting there for five years doing exactly what you need) and an unused specimen.

Could be a person has some anxiety issue. Could be it's easier for the cashier to ask one person: "Anything else? No? Ok you total is...." than it is to flip back and forth and double check and etc.

What's the future of cars, will it be petrol diesel still for another 30 years or will batteries, hybrids or hydrogen fuel cells be a thing? What will happen with bigger thigns like 18wheelers, those already have very big fuel tanks so maybe they can't carry a large enough battery pack?

When will self-driving cars be available on the used car market?

I don't know how soon self-driving cars will be available for anything more than the occasional road test, but I imagine hybrids and electrics will expand. The UK is testing road lanes that charge electric vehicles as they drive so those could potentially be huge.

Regular gas isn't going anywhere for a while, though, not with how powerful the oil industry is and how widespread oil-consuming vehicles and machines are.

Oh, and big vehicles can certainly be alt-fuel. My city replaced their metro buses with hybrid diesel-electric, they just have big lumps on the roof that I assume is a battery.

Semi-related, If I sell something on craigslist and give someone my address, if they're < 25 they will pull up in front of my house and text or call. If I ignore the call, they will text and call again, sit there for a few minutes, and drive away rather than knock on the door at my house that we have already arranged to meet at for a specific transaction at a specific time.

I think some (young) people do so much texting that IRL human contact is just unthinkable.
