Man, I'd forgotten all about that book. The only redeeming bit of it was Xizor's (??) death. He spent the whole book bragging about how important he was to the working of the empire, blah blah blah. Darth Vader didn't really give a poo poo about Xizor at all, until Xizor mildly inconvenienced him. Then Vader killed the dude because he could, with trivial ease.

And then wannabe Han Solo died. The book redeemed itself pretty well.

Shadows of the Empire was a "multimedia event", the idea being that the only way to get the "whole picture" was to buy/play/read everything cross various media.
The only other comparable "event" thing I can think of was the Clone Wars stuff that came out between Ep2 and 3, and came out in roughly "real time" since the gap between the movies was 3 years and the Clone Wars spanned 3 years. It was a neat idea in concept, where a novel that came out 3 weeks after a given comic book was literally supposed to have occurred 3 weeks later, etc.

I guess The Force Unleashed was a sorta similar "multimedia event", but nowhere near the scope of Shadows or Clone Wars.

Oh. I'm glad I knew nothing about this multimedia venture.

Dash Rendar, and "canonically" he didn't die.

It's been a really long time since I read Shadows of the Empire or played the videogame. The best part about the game is it laid the groundwork for the really great Rogue Squadron games.

I used to be like that, I made it a point to buy every Star Wars comic, novel, videogame, sourcebook, whatever, just to be "a completist". Over time it got to be too difficult/expensive to keep up with everything that was coming out - I know I bought a ton of the books following the end of the New Jedi Order (the Swarm War trilogy, and like all of that 15-book mega-event that came after that) and didn't read a single one of them because to be totally honest my interest in Star Wars was really waning. I didn't buy any of the Fate of the Jedi books because at that point I'd wised up. I just didn't care anymore, and to be honest it's kinda difficult to articulate why I cared so much in the first place.

Finally one day I was looking at all of my Star Wars poo poo and realized that I didn't care about the vast majority of it, and everything else I was never going to read again and was just taking up space. So I sold off like all of the books except for the few I cared about and I knew I'd read again (the X-wing books, the short story anthologies), all of the video games except the ones I cared about (the X-wing/TIE Fighter series, Rogue Squadron series), all of the comics except the ones I gave a poo poo about (the Rogue Squadron ones - noticing a pattern? - and the Tales of the Jedi stuff) and freed up a ton of room in my house.

And then Lucasfilm went and said everything was non-canon anyway lol
But I don't care, I re-read the X-wing comics and books because they're fun to read and I like Star Wars starfighters dogfighting and blowing poo poo up, and I'm not really bothered if it's not "The True History Of The Star Wars Galaxy" anymore or whatever.

My interest in Star Wars dwindled for a long while, even in the face of the new movie coming out and the hype train gaining speed, but I recently got hooked on the X-wing miniatures game (who would have guessed?) and having fun with that, and it's making me want to re-read the X-wing books/comics and see if I still enjoy them as much as I thought I did.

and that's a lot of words about Star Wars

Pretty much. It was solely a Lucasfilm Games project and wasn't canon to begin with, so the new owners have no reason to continue it.

The first level of Force Unleashed 1 (which was also the demo) is the only genuinely good thing that came out of any of that. Everything that comes after that gets steadily worse in a number of inventive ways to be bad. Both of them felt rather rushed, the second one far more so.

The idea of playing Star Wars Goku is awesome but they hosed up a lot of things along the way. The level design and "story" in the second one are awful and it's basically a 13-year-old's fanfic where he meets all the original series characters, who either wave at him or he kills them.

Are you counting the first level as the prologue where you play as Vader and just massacre wookiees, or the one where you attack that rebel outpost, killing stormtrooper and rebel alike?

Either way, :agreed:

Well the "first" level in my mind is the demo level, which was holy poo poo amazing. Then the rest of the game is finding ways to not let you do cool things.

The Vader level where you just slaughter all those stupid loving wookiees is also great.

FU1 still has its charms because the story is ultimate-level convoluted and weird even by EU standards.

LucasArts is long gone. Heres some news articles from google about it. It was lame.

The second step was a project called Version Two, designed to show off vehicle prototypes and other Battlefront elements that didn’t make it into First Assault. This “Version Two” grew from the remnants of a project code-named Wingman that was going to be a Wii U title modeled after the old TIE Fighter and X-Wing games. Now, it would instead be part of the Battlefront plan.

Actually it's sad the studio what made maniac mansion got shuttered but by then they had gone mad. A x wing/tie fighter revival on the loving Wii U. Retards.

TFU2 ended up coming out just as they were shuttering Lucasarts. It's fairly evident that somewhere in development the studio got completely gutted as the game has like 4 stages, one of which is used twice. At one point in the game you go to Dagobah to talk to Yoda and the entire level is getting out of your ship, walking across a small area and a cutscene with Yoda which ends with you leaving the planet.

I remember The Matrix tried this too with even less success. The first film blew people away and spontaneously generated a billion assholes in black trenchcoats and shades and made that one Nokia phone a god drat status symbol. Then Reloaded and Revolutions were teased and to get 'the whole story' you needed to watch the anime DVD (but only specific parts of it) and read the comics and play the games.

It also did that thing where every character was a super-important person without whom humanity could not have triumphed. Except they did it in reverse so instead of like in Star Wars where one-scene background characters from the movies had entire novels or comics devoted to them, the Matrix made novels and comics about people who then became one-scene background characters in the movies.

Of course then Reloaded came out and was a mish-mash of bad CGI and a plot that even Hugo Weaving hamming it up couldn't save (although the car chase does rule). Then Revolutions was released and poisoned the well so much the entire franchise now only exists as a single red pill reference used by MRAs, pick-up artists and far-right reactionaries.

Touch screen/second screen stuff sucks when it's shoehorned in just as a gimmick, but I think having the controls for power regulation as sliders and maybe shield arc settings on the touchscreen would actually be a good and motivated use of the Wii U gamepad, keeping the actual flight controls mapped to the sticks and buttons.

I want a Starwar on the Wii U.
