President Obama just nominated Eric Fanning to be Secretary of the Army This is notable because serving in the army was only opened to homosexuals in 2011, and Mr Fanning is an openly gay man. He has been acting undersecretary of the army for a few months and did secretary and undersecretary of the Air Force previously, so he is pretty qualified

Obama should sign the "Defund Planned Parenthood Act" or a budget that includes it and then issue a signing statement that its clearly an unconstititutional bill of attainder so that provision is not enforceable. This is the text of the bill: quote:A BILL If the republicans weren't idiots they'd have made it apply to all organizations that provide abortions but republicans don't know how to govern so

I remember reading something a while back about Republican armed services committees manipulating the Navy budget to limit things like disaster relief, is there any truth to that? Even though the Fiorina stuff is bullshit you can at least use ships for humanitarian aid, anti-piracy and other non-combat roles.

Zeroisanumber posted:The Navy is in need of quite a bit of recapitalization, but that means developing and deploying new ships, not just adding numbers. The US navy is the largest and most modern navy in the world. Sure, some ships are getting old, but they are still more advanced than what most countries around the world have. Lets be clear about one thing, there is no branch of the US military that requires new funding or that is weak. With a 600+ billion budget, about as much as the next 7 or 8 countries combined, the US military is doing just fine. Nintendo Kid posted:Is it really though? Like, seriously? It kinda seems like we have more than enough to have 2/3 of it go up in smoke tomorrow and still be able to fight off the world without any new ship designs. What he said.

Rubio's campaign manager punched a Rand Paul staffer in the face. Police are getting involved and a video of the incident has emerged[/url].quote:Last night I went to a bar on Mackinac Island for the GOP Mackinac Conference. I ran into a guy named Rich Beeson, who frankly I didn't even know who it was at first because he isn't relevant in our political world. Anyway, he is Marco Rubio's national campaign manager. He literally physically assaulted me by punching me in the face. The state police are looking for him. I have it on video, from multiple angles. This will play out in the national media in the next few hours. Also, a congressman that nobody cares about is boycotting Pope Francis's visit to Washington next week and calling his colleagues to do the same. quote:Media reports indicate His Holiness instead intends to focus the brunt of his speech on climate change--a climate that has been changing since first created in Genesis. More troubling is the fact that this climate change talk has adopted all of the socialist talking points, wrapped false science and ideology into “climate justice” and is being presented to guilt people into leftist policies. If the Pope stuck to standard Christian theology, I would be the first in line. If the Pope spoke out with moral authority against violent Islam, I would be there cheering him on. If the Pope urged the Western nations to rescue persecuted Christians in the Middle East, I would back him wholeheartedly. But when the Pope chooses to act and talk like a leftist politician, then he can expect to be treated like one.

It's not like they're all as they were in the 70s and 80s though. They've all been basically continuously upgraded and refitted with newer systems and weapons. Yeah there's only so much you can do with an old hull before you need to start over, but even those "old" ships are quite advanced.

Yes, but given the lead times on the combination of defense procurement and shipbuilding, you start designing now so you can replace the ships from the 70s and 80s in the 20s and 30s.

Even a ship launched in the late 70's or early 80's is pushing 35-40 years old right now, and like it's been said while the electronics have been continuously upgraded the hulls are still 35-40 years old and salt water is really, really loving corrosive to metal. The other problem is that republicans see military procurement as the only viable jobs program which the defense industry has exploited to the fullest.

Oh, I get it. Ship I'm on was launched in 1978 and even with an extensive refit in 2009, it's showing its age. My point was just that they're quite as out of date as their ages would suggest, not that they're not due for replacement soon.
