[Quote]we have a lot of individual systems on ships that blow everything else away, but as a whole, yeah, a lot of it is stuff designed in the 70s and built in the decades since. Top down overhaul of the design would be nice but is infeasible because now by the time we built it on a large scale it would be massively outdated. Moore's Law has had some very interesting unintended consequences for military procurement.

This is notable because serving in the army was only opened to homosexuals in 2011, and Mr Fanning is an openly gay man.

He has been acting undersecretary of the army for a few months and did secretary and undersecretary of the Air Force previously, so he is pretty qualified

Obama should sign the "Defund Planned Parenthood Act" or a budget that includes it and then issue a signing statement that its clearly an unconstititutional bill of attainder so that provision is not enforceable. :troll:

This is the text of the bill:

quote:

A BILL
To provide for a moratorium on Federal funding to Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,
SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.

This Act may be cited as the `Defund Planned Parenthood Act of 2015'.
SEC. 2. MORATORIUM ON FEDERAL FUNDING TO PLANNED PARENTHOOD FEDERATION OF AMERICA, INC.

(a) In General- For the one-year period beginning on the date of the enactment of this Act, subject to subsection (b), no funds authorized or appropriated by Federal law may be made available for any purpose to Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc., or any affiliate or clinic of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc., unless such entities certify that Planned Parenthood Federation of America affiliates and clinics will not perform, and will not provide any funds to any other entity that performs, an abortion during such period.
(b) Exception- Subsection (a) shall not apply to an abortion--
(1) if the pregnancy is the result of an act of rape or incest; or
(2) in the case where a woman suffers from a physical disorder, physical injury, or physical illness that would, as certified by a physician, place the woman in danger of death unless an abortion is performed, including a life-endangering physical condition caused by or arising from the pregnancy itself.
(c) Repayment- The Secretary of Health and Human Services and the Secretary of Agriculture shall seek repayment of any Federal assistance received by Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc., or any affiliate or clinic of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc., if it violates the terms of the certification required by subsection (a) during the period specified in subsection (a).

If the republicans weren't idiots they'd have made it apply to all organizations that provide abortions but republicans don't know how to govern so :allears:

Lets be clear about one thing, there is no branch of the US military that requires new funding or that is weak. With a 600+ billion budget, about as much as the next 7 or 8 countries combined, the US military is doing just fine.

Nintendo Kid posted:

Is it really though? Like, seriously? It kinda seems like we have more than enough to have 2/3 of it go up in smoke tomorrow and still be able to fight off the world without any new ship designs.

I mean building replacement ships just for the sake of keeping the shipyards employing people is a decent enough thing, but it's not all that neccesary.

The funding is horrifically misallocated though. The sequester cuts for example all hit operations stuff because funding for equipment and the like is already set by congress. This means that while we might have shiny equipment people aren't being trained in using it effectively.

The ships are getting old, most of them were launched in the 70's and 80's, and we need to start replacing them with newer ships and new designs. The sub fleet is in the most critical need of regeneration, but everything is going to need to be replaced in the next 20 years or so.

Also, a congressman that nobody cares about is boycotting Pope Francis's visit to Washington next week and calling his colleagues to do the same.

Media reports indicate His Holiness instead intends to focus the brunt of his speech on climate change--a climate that has been changing since first created in Genesis. More troubling is the fact that this climate change talk has adopted all of the socialist talking points, wrapped false science and ideology into “climate justice” and is being presented to guilt people into leftist policies. If the Pope stuck to standard Christian theology, I would be the first in line. If the Pope spoke out with moral authority against violent Islam, I would be there cheering him on. If the Pope urged the Western nations to rescue persecuted Christians in the Middle East, I would back him wholeheartedly. But when the Pope chooses to act and talk like a leftist politician, then he can expect to be treated like one.

It's not like they're all as they were in the 70s and 80s though. They've all been basically continuously upgraded and refitted with newer systems and weapons. Yeah there's only so much you can do with an old hull before you need to start over, but even those "old" ships are quite advanced.

Yes, but given the lead times on the combination of defense procurement and shipbuilding, you start designing now so you can replace the ships from the 70s and 80s in the 20s and 30s.

Even a ship launched in the late 70's or early 80's is pushing 35-40 years old right now, and like it's been said while the electronics have been continuously upgraded the hulls are still 35-40 years old and salt water is really, really loving corrosive to metal.

The other problem is that republicans see military procurement as the only viable jobs program which the defense industry has exploited to the fullest.

Oh, I get it. Ship I'm on was launched in 1978 and even with an extensive refit in 2009, it's showing its age. My point was just that they're quite as out of date as their ages would suggest, not that they're not due for replacement soon.

With proper corrosion measures there should not be any hull damage no matter how long its been at sea.
