Forest Thief Pud posted:Actually, the way Ernest works is that you a) have to have Opera in the party and b) you have to do a bunch of side-events that relate to Opera and Ernest before going to Hoffman Ruins which you're required to go to because of plot reasons, and then he shows up as a boss after you fight the story boss of the dungeon. Ernest and Opera can then go leave the planet together if you don't convince them to stay, so at least that's a decent enough ending. Yeah, but you can avoid that room with the story boss. So if you're a completionist and want Opera but not Ernest in your party, just do the side-events and then make sure to walk past the room with the extra boss on your way out.

Vp2 is universally liked, it's just graded against another good game backed by nostalgia. The one common complaint is the lack of cutscene on the spirits, but that's not what the plot's about.

Valkyrie Profile 2 is great. I like VP1 more but VP2 is excellent. I actually imported VP2 when it first came out and liked it enough I bought the US version as soon as it was out.

corn in the bible posted:valkyrie profile 2 can do 1080i I had to look this up and it sounds like it just upscales from 480p and only works on the JP version of the game. Probably better off trying to emulate it at this point if you want it in HD. As far as the game itself goes, I'll be "that guy" and say I liked VP2 a lot better than 1. The format of VP1 was much more interesting and unique, Lenneth is a way cooler protagonist of course, and a lot of the sprite work in VP1 was fantastic. But basically everything other than that, especially combat, I liked much better about VP2. One real poo poo part of VP2 is, I believe Chapter 3, which is like 3-4 times longer than every other chapter in the game, and virtually nothing happens in the story during it until the end. Just a lot of 'go to this dungeon, now go to this dungeon', really drags. The other poo poo part is that characters join and leave your party permanently all the time and the game has a whole lot of permanent stat booster items you are encouraged to get and use. Spoiler for end of the game: Even the main character Alicia leaves the party right before the final boss. So just on the offhand you had been dumping all your stat boosters into her or something, sorry get hosed. Rufus is the only character that stays with you the entire game, but he does leave the party briefly for a few bossfights near the end of the game.

corn in the bible posted:A pstv is hella cheap, though it won't run ys celceta because of various bullshit reasons Yeah, I thought about one, but I'd pretty much just be getting something to play on at work, so the Vita is a better choice. That being said, I have yet to play a Tales game that really grabbed me, so it sounds like I'd pretty much be getting it for PSN games, remote play, and Persona 4 (and maybe Disgaea 4). I may need to mull it over more...

Golden Goat posted:Okay i'm gonna need starting tips for VP2 You're sort of expected to "Release" your Einherjar throughout the game, which gives them up in exchange for permanent stat buff items you can give to the other characters you decide to keep. The items you get are based on their gear (not including accessories), so IIRC you just need to gain 5 levels of them and then beyond that they don't matter. This is mostly a min-maxy mechanic, you can completely ignore it on your first playthrough if you want. You'll need to get into it if you go for harder difficulties or the bonus post-game dungeon. Story characters come and go all the time. Don't spend any permanent stat-up items on anyone other than Rufus, or maybe as Einherjar that is particularly good. Pick a few Einherjar you really like and keep them. They're reliable party fillers and many of them are quite good. Feel free to Release any unnecessary ones. In battle you can split your party into multiple groups. Don't forget this because it's really useful. The game isn't like VP1 in that you need to follow a confusing series of decisions to get the 'real' ending. There's one very minor bonus ending bit that's easy to get if you want though. Honestly other than that I think it's pretty easy to pick up, don't really need to know much going in for your first playthrough. There's a poem you might want to read in some houses in the first two chapters for a goodie later on, but it's not critical.

Stats don't really matter much for most of the game. It's mostly about equipment bonus stacking and skills. The tutorial does a good job explaining everything, but generally the most active thing you'll do is switch up your attacks because they are very context-sensitive (size, weight, armor, etc).

The only two things I disliked about Vp2 were how Einjerhar were random to an extent and how some of the companions were handled.

Use Phyress Elemental attacks are more or less universally better than non-elemental attacks, since the elemental portion is bonus magic damage on top of the physical damage. Weapons with elements then add additional magical damage, in a way that stacks.

Probably better off trying to emulate it at this point if you want it in HD. IIRC, this does work on the US version (and also for Radiata Stories and Star Ocean: Till the End of Time) because I remember holding down some buttons each time (triangle and something) I booted it to enable progressive scan (480p), and then switch to widescreen within the game. Definitely not 720p/1080i though. I want to say the only PS2 game that can do that was Gran Turismo 4. Fake edit: I am completely and utterly wrong. Check this awesome list for all PS2 resolution outliers. Real edit: I wish VP2/RS/SO3 would come up on the PS Store so I could open my wallet for them again. PS2's out of commission and emulation isn't really an option due to my refusal to move the PC to the living room. I preferred VP2 over 1 because there wasn't this lingering "hey the world ends in x days, so quit loving around and move forward already." and I could just sit and grind materials for hours, and by golly I sure did. It was a great incentive to screw around with combos and stuff and getting some of those rewards for hitting poo poo in mid-air or whatever made me feel so warm and happy inside. xov fucked around with this message at 21:40 on Sep 18, 2015 |

it's not like they have the shadow hearts devs working on pachinko machines. Nautilus got dissolved completely by Aruze. it's dead. All the employees went on to work at feelplus (lost odyssey and infinite undiscovery) and then feelplus got rolled into Marvelous (uh, Fate/Extra?)

If you want people really high up in the chain, the director/writer of Shadow Hearts 1 and 2 worked on some PSP rpgs that never left japan. Big RIP. The guy behind Koudelka went back to just composing games. He's worked on Soul Calibur, the Shining series, and touhou remix albums. The director of Shadow Hearts 3 worked on Lost Odyssey, too. and the character designer for all 3 games draws PreCure fanart on pixiv, which is the happiest ending of all, really.
