That was such a loving Panthers game.

Ron Rivera and Sean McDermott went in with the most vanilla poo poo he could think of. They couldn't even outskill anyone because Kuechly was out and Charles Johnson blew out his hamstring. Blindsite touched on this, but the coaching strategy of the Panthers since John Fox was hired has been to let other teams make mistakes. They just let Luke McCown dink and dunk the poo poo out of them for 27 completions. They play a style on offense that allows the bare minimum room for error, and you saw the problems with it today. The defense is beat up and playing vanilla the entire time and they still need a miracle interception from Josh Norman to beat a backup QB in their home stadium. Hell, a slightly better throw and that's the go ahead Touchdown.

The Panthers are a mash unit on defense now to compliment the other side of the ball. Johnson is dead, Davis had a shoulder stinger (which means he got a concussion and managed to get off the field), Luke is stuck in the protocol, Tillman and Harper are both wearing orthopedic cleats, etc. This team REALLY needs the drat bye, and is primed for an upset next week against Tampa Bay.

On offense, it's the usual. The offensive line was great, and Cam did the rest. Obviously he's not going to get any awards because he doesn't have the gaudy numbers and the narrative is always going to be against him (as I posted earlier) but no one in the league is doing more with less right now. We're in a situation where on critical third downs at the end of the game, we're having to call pass plays to Brentson Bersin who of course slips, just like he did last year in the game losing interception against the Seahawks in the playoffs. Good gently caress that Benjamin injury hurts.

I'm trying to just enjoy this start and not look ahead but good god this team needs some free agents, and finally we can afford them.

I remember when Chad Johnson was young he would alway talk about how Steve Smith Sr was the veteran he looked up to. Like, in 2004. He had nearly 200 yards today as a receiver. Jesus. Christ.

I get the feeling a small chunk of that budget is going to go to keeping norman, but yeah if we can get another receiver with Benjamin coming back the team's offense should be something next year, even if Shula finds a way to stick around (hint: he will).

That Johnson injury is going to be a killer. Goddamn there's some firepower with Star, Johnson and Luke being on the sideline. Makes me wish the team would turn Shaq loose with some blitzes. At least McDermott is a good coordinator and can dial up some decent schemes when required. I think the lack of adjustments on the fly today was a bit of a shame because it was obvious what the saints were going to do every goddamn down, attack that middle section.

If we can get through Tampa, even if Star, Johnson and Luke are held out, which wouldn't be easy, but is doable. The team should be in good shape come week 6. I guess we wait till wednesday to see what the report says on Luke and Johnson. If they're down for that 4 weeks we get colts, seattle and green bay we'll probably be 500 heading into week 10. I fully expect to drop two of those games (GB and SEA), but if the defensive line can get healthy I like our chances of beating the colts.

Tanny certainly does seem unwilling to just take over a game so I do know what you're saying.

Delhomme had 319 passing yard. 218 were to Smith.

Just looked up the box score, sure helped that Rexy went 17/41 for 191 yards and a pick, that's some peak Rex Grossman poo poo right there.
