For me it's more that she's surrounded by heavyweights but never once gets lost. Her character is merely reminiscent of Marge Gunderson but that's where it ends. Martin Freeman and Billy Bob pull similar tricks but are already very acclaimed actors.

i actually wasn't crazy about Tolman's performance but i loved just about everybody else. i thought it was Billy Bob's best work in a while.

I'd put Freeman's performance right up there with Tolman, the two of them were the driving force of the show. Thornton just felt like he was playing a slightly tweaked version of characters he's done his whole career. He was very good and added a lot to the season but I didn't feel like I was seeing something new.

I'm more talking about the way he says his lines, his presence, his "aura" in general. It wasn't all that different from the usual Billy Bob performance. I really liked it too though, I'm just saying a few other performances stood out more.

Sir Kodiak posted:The Red Dragon season was interesting in this regard since you have the other adaptations to compare it to. They just assume you'll understand that Hannibal know's people secrets, that Hannibal can make a phone call to anyone he wants while locked in a psychiatric institution, etc. without having to bother with the mechanics. I appreciated a lot of their take on Red Dragon but after two seasons of original plotlines where serial killers with body counts in the double digits are a weekly occurrence it was kind of silly that all of a sudden a guy killing one family got so much attention because the source material demanded it. But yes, Fargo is fantastic. Probably some of the best television of last year and after season 2 of True Detective crashed and burned so spectacularly I'm only looking forward to season 2 of Fargo more.

dreadnought posted:Anyone else seen Exporting Raymond? It's a documentary about the creators of Everybody Loves Raymond trying to create a Russian version of the show. It definitely doesn't hesitate to pile on the cheese and platitudes about *~culture~*, but it's also really funny at times and hits some pretty interesting points about how comedy translates between cultures. If nothing else, you should enjoy it if you like behind the scenes docs. Yeah, I watched this. It was pleasant enough, but the guy is REALLY not funny. Like, he is exactly as unfunny as Everybody Loves Raymond, which stands to reason. I found the Russians to be hilarious, however. It's too bad that the guy just fundamentally doesn't get what it is to be Russian.

There's a level of craft and care there that is extremely rare in television (especially network television.) Full disclosure I loved Hannibal. I didn't enjoy Hannibal at all, and I think the people behind it have a much higher opinion of it than it deserves. It was well produced, though, and it's a good thing that such creative shows are still getting made. Tv (and film, for that matter) producers should learn that aiming for one particular audience, rather than every living person with a telly, isn't a bad thing.

The Punk Singer starts out promising, but holy poo poo it goes downhill fast. I don't think I've ever seen such a bunch of totally humorless dorks in one place. There were even some regulars in there I am a fan of, but seeing them acting totally somber all the time over basically nothing was pretty groan worthy. The buildup to what made her stop performing is priceless though. After years of doctors telling her that basically she was just imagining poo poo, she finally gets a proper diagnosis chronic lyme disease! because of course it is. The entire tone of the film is just weird as gently caress. It's like everyone is talking about a dead icon, as opposed to a semi well known indie front woman who took a break from music for a few years and also stars in the film. I sort of like Bikini Kill/Le Tigre but that was just embarrassing to watch. She seems like an absolute buzzkill to be around.

I'm assuming most of you have, but everyone should watch Romeo + Juliet before it expires if you haven't. It's such a product of its time, and often feels incredibly dated, but it's a deliriously fun circus of a film that's sincerely one of the best Shakespeare adaptions ever made. Also, purely IMHO, the only great film Baz Luhrman has made to date.

Anybody who's a fan of movies with titles that perfectly describe their contents should check out Immoral Tales. It's new to Netflix or else I just noticed it. You will like it if you are a fan of Valerie's Week of Wonders, lingering shots of lips and scenery, incest, priest incest, etc. It's an anthology of four stories, two of which are totally immersive in visuals, two of which in soundtrack, and one's bad.
