Even the assorted buffs they keep tossing at torpedoes has opportunity costs for rep powers and consoles and such, which means they're basically useless picks. Nobody's doing a piece on Derek Smart because he actually pays for his games himself. Or who the gently caress knows how he keeps coming up with the money. Chris Roberts on the other hand is doing a good job ruining his reputation all by himself and he got what, 90 million now? Look what you made me do Chris Roberts. I'm actually siding with Doctor Derek "Desktop Commander" Smart.

So I found an interesting bug (?) with the terran taskforce space set. It is applying to itself, so it fires more torpedoes when the extra torpedoes hit. Which means if you're fighting an invincible enemy you just keep firing.. forever. Or at least until you fly out of range. Tuskin38 fucked around with this message at 21:51 on Oct 2, 2015 |

Out of curiosity does any one know how the rights to produce a game like this work out? Like, since ARC is running a current MMO with the Star Trek license, does that block any other company from doing it as well? I was talking about it with a friend and its just such a shame that this game is your only option for a Star Trek ship game right now.
|
# ? Oct 3, 2015 00:16 |

Rights are usually exclusive, yes, though usually only in certain areas. EA for example has pretty much exclusive rights to any sort of Star Wars game, but Perfect World/Cryptic only has MMO rights to Star Trek and it's possible another company could release a different type of Trek game. This is furthered muddled by Trek's rights being split between CBS (TV show) and Paramount (Movies), and there's other further issues if you want to use EU-sourced material since the creator may or may not have some rights to it as well. Basically media licensing is a baroque clusterfuck. Asimo fucked around with this message at 01:10 on Oct 3, 2015 |

Cryptic/Perfect World have the rights to the Prime Timeline in the MMO space. Off the top of my head, there's that awful cover-shooter from JJTrek that was released a few years back, and there's Star Trek Gems (a bad match-three game) and Star Trek Trexels (a bad Tiny Tower kind of knockoff) on mobile devices right now. There's also Star Trek Timelines coming to web and mobile at some point in the indeterminate future. In fact, I think at one point someone said Cryptic explicitly does not have rights to release a Star Trek app for mobile devices, which is why there's no Gateway, even though it would make perfect sense. Well, that and I doubt Cryptic has the skills on-staff necessary for a passable mobile application. Really, STO is just one of the many marvelously bad Star Trek games that have been released over the past two decades. Wizard of the Deep fucked around with this message at 01:14 on Oct 3, 2015 |
