I didn't edit the deadzone though, but it still feels unnatural as a whole.

Try setting it for the slider, feel very intiutive for me. Slider forward is forward, slider back is reverse.

Get a refinery. The more bins, the better. It is all automatic now as long as there are empty bins

Get a collector control module. Make sure it is size three. 3A is best, drones from it last 12 minutes and you can have two at once. You can have another module and another two drones at once, but launch them from a different fire group (you can't launch two at the same time)

If possible, put on a prospector module. It can be a size 1, they tell you what a rock has and may also boost yield

Get as much cargo space you can. Go to the munitions screen and buy "limpets", enough to fill a little more than half your cargo space.

go to the Frey system, fourth world. It has a pristine metallic ring and is not far from 63 G. Capricorni

Oh wait, did you equip mining lasers? gently caress. Luckily there is a station that sells them 62 ls away. Go there and get some, refuel, etc

Back at Frey 4, head to the inner-most ring. Set up your fire groups so you can launch a prospector, mining lasers, etc. you will need some lasers for killin' unless you got friends at your back. I slap on a KWS so you can scan pirates- yeah, go back to the station. And learn to read all instructions before starting things.

Okay, back at Frey 4, inner ring, here we go: fire a prospector. Ignore any failure messages, surprise, it is bugged. If your cargo scoop is open, it will briefly close it to program and launch the limpet (drone). Switch groups and get your collectors out. Oh boy!

Once launched, the prospector is selectable and if you are smarter than you look, will actually hit the rock. It will tell you what types of elements are in it, how much, and how much left until the rock is depleted. Shop around and look for gold, platinum, palladium, osmium, and jesus christ yes, painite. Plenty of other metals and minerals here to grab but try to make sure you prioritize any of those five.

Get somewhat close. Fire mining lasers into rock. Make sure cargo scoop is open. Now the fun part - watch your refinery and cargo hold slowly fill up! When depleted, move on and go back two steps and repeat.

Hold full? Take dat pure profit to a high tech or a refinery. I suggest Xihe which is a high tech refinery. Now check the bulletin board for mining missions. If you have the minerals take and complete for not only massive increases of money, but reputation and eventually rank missions as well!

When you get tired of gaming the bulletin board (missions reroll regularly) sell your other minerals and metals at the market and head back out! Hi-ho!

How do you handle the pirate NPCs that will inevitably harass you?

Do you have to do this in a RES or can you just crash anywhere into a pristine ring and go to work?

Does a higher difficulty RES equate to better yields?

I outfitted a mining Clipper so I generally have no problems. An Asp can also pull this off nicely. Smaller miners can just run straight up and out of the ring - no need to be a hero. Conversely, hire a Frog to fly with you and watch your back. Wing up!

You can crash anywhere in a ring but pay attention to the system map and check if the world has multiple wings. They are listed from inside out.

Regardless where you mine, pirates and or security might show up anyway. RES zones may or may not have sweeter yields but a pristine metallic ring like Frey 4 already has impressive rocks especially when prospected first.

You don't ever have to jump out of the area to "reset" an area. I usually fly towards the planet and constantly get good results. Don't feel obligated to mine anything just because you prospected it either, always priority valuable metals and minerals

I tried the new mining today and it is super chill and a nice break from combat. I'll bet mining is going to look amazing in VR, with the asteroids everywhere and your collectors zipping around and returning to you.

Sold for $1.2M on the commodity market (there were no mining missions available and I'm too lazy to reroll). Not as fast as Vulture RES murder time, but it was fun!

I went cheap with it, so my refinery only had 4 spaces. It wasn't bad as long as I stayed on top of venting junk resources, but I'll definitely grab one with ~7 bins at some point. Thanks to all who've posted mining guides!

My sample size is a whopping "one," but I crashed into a random section of ring and I was the only ship around. I doubt NPC pirates fly into random areas like that. Dunno about the RES yields, but I had no problem finding rocks with PPPGO in my random ring area. About every other one I prospected had at least one PPPGO and several had 2-3. If there if a difference, then I doubt it's worth to have pirates swarming around and disrupting your chill-mode space mining.

The significant bits:

5D Limpet Controller - that's 3 simultaneous collector limpets, with a 12 minute duration
[...]
Various scanners - you can actually not buy these if you choose, they won't help you mine, but having them means you can do your own surveying

As someone who's never done any scanning of anything, would you mind explaining what the benefit of surveying is? I didn't bother with the scanners, so instead of a 5D I got two smaller limpet controllers, which still gave me 3 at once and let me slap another 32T onto that 5 slot, but I can work scanners into them if there's some nice benefit I'm missing.

I have other people telling me it boosts the yield of the prospected rock multiple times. I believe it, i usually stop half way and let my collectors catch up.

They are a steady drain on your limpets which is why i recommend hauling a little more than half your cargo space as blank limpets.

I happen to have the scanners because I'm a semi-serious Explorer (Pioneer). The various scanners are used only for gathering information on un-surveyed systems. You won't discover the most distant planets from a sun without an Advanced Scanner, and you won't get information about the composition of a Gas Giant's rings without a Detailed Surface Scanner. If you intend to mine in established systems, you don't need either of them. I like having them so I can scan and discover new systems, while I'm en route to wherever. If you use that space for more capacity between return trips, your mining excursions will be more efficient.

Does anyone have any tips for working up ranks on the Federal side of things? I'd like to work towards putting myself into a Federal Corvette when they get put in the game, but most of the "Guides" I've seen around are dated or heavy mic breathing you tube videos about people guessing at mechanics.

I sided with Hudson for the cash from bounties for now so as not to put my Fed rank in the toilet until I get the ship, then its defection time so I can actually play with human beings.

Semi-related: I've been trying to get in a wing with a friend of mine and we simply cannot meet up in space. Everytime either of us drops on the other's wing beacon it just dumps us into empty space. We've tried logging out, refreshing the instances, etc. What's the deal with this janky poo poo? We're on literally opposite sides of the earth, is that going to be a problem?

I've been raising my fed rank by mining and then reloading the BB for mining missions. Went from recruit to petty officer tonight.
Some systems only have donation missions on their BBs - if you can find one of those then you can just pay to increase your rank.

Multiplayer is peer-to-peer, so there's probably a latency cutoff which prevents you from meeting up.
