Yeah, from everything I've heard from online artists who do any sort of commission, furries are always fantastic clients who are willing to pay well and often for their own weirdly specific porn. It's good money, apparently, if you are willing to suspend your sense of taste and dignity.

In the a/t furry thread it was also established that although they are likely to promise good pay, they habitually blow off payment and often try to be really overbearingly nice to the artist in order to fish for price cuts. Anyway just some cautionary tales about making furry porn.

Anyone remember Ritot, the projection watch? It was funded a year ago with ~$1.7m and they're still updating. Here's a recent picture:

quote:

Dear Friends!

We finished the next stage of our work with the prototype – soldering of components and connectors for existing Bluetooth, Touchpad, Accelerometer modules.

The process was delayed for a week because we had to wait for delivery of some components.
Now we start programming and debugging of the device. Afterwards we will start the work on the minimization, so all our components will be fitted in Ritot case.

Stay tuned.

so i'm not a software or hardware developer but when developing something where the point is for it to be wristwatch-sized, is it an issue that they're going to get all the software and hardware development basically finalized before attempting to miniaturize any of it?

I guess the software isn't going to be a lot different on smaller hardware with the same specs ?

e: not a real issue since both won't exist

Diamonds aren't the only things that are forever.
If you want to read some electronics engineers' comments on the Ritot - EEV Forum.

Also, they're selling the watches for $199, but just one part of the micro projector they plan to use costs $100 wholesale. 8,918 backers but only 1,063 rewards claimed seems kind of suspicious too.

No, that's perfectly fine. You typically develop hardware and software together to save time. The first prototypes are just built using standard components and look pretty much like the one seen. The first Intel Mac was a PC with a bit of soldering and the first iPhone was a G3 Mac.

You then go down in size using custom print and later custom chips (if needed). This is a prototype that - wrongly assuming it's not a scam - won't be ready for years.

The first Intel Mac was an off the shelf PC in the mid 90s, no special soldering needed. And a G3 Mac was the first iPhone prototype only in as much as the first Boeing 787 was a Unix workstation.

Not surprised they've started by getting it patented in various east Asian places, they're crazy for these magical roller things promising completely unrealistic benefits. Dunno if they're "Far Infrared" though, but I can only assume that makes it more magical and science-y.

Yeah, that's what I was guessing.

I mean I'm sure it would be lovely, in the same way that a neck massage and a hot water bottle is lovely. If it works. Actually, has anyone tried combining a hot water bottle and a massage roller? If not, I've got an idea for a great new Kickstarter.

This is every lovely human being ever, furry or not, for porn or not. I've read enough stories about people who do any kind of work for money on their own coming across one of those.

Nah, the same circuit can be done as a PCB or a chip and doing the latter is going to make it several factors of ten smaller inherently. Its not really uncommon to test the idea with a big sized version first.

That said, I called bullshit on the projector when it was an active campaign because projection technology that works at that angle and clarity literally doesn't exist. Miniaturizing the components is the least of their problems.

To deliver on their kickstarter like the video promised they'd have to revolutionize image projection technology to the point where they could just licence it to Apple or Xerox or whoever for millions of dollars and there'd be no reason to run a kickstarter for a dumb watch. But they definitely can't do that.

Its a whole ton of work that's just going to result in a really smeared image. (Actually they'll just never deliver)
