I'm so glad Pat didn't want to be in the LP, I really don't need someone backseat gaming me, who also doesn't care about the game their watching. He hates Earthbound, so the fact he doesn't like Undertale all that much surprises me less than zero.

However, I am hard pressed to think of a game that I came away from so thoroughly satisfied in the last five years. I don't feel the need to play more of it, and I am content with that, which is a super rare feeling for me. Often I get that aching feeling that it's over and there's no more, but with undertale, I was just happy to have experienced it. Whether the developer thinks it's deserving of high praise or not is irrelevant. It had special meaning to a lot of people.

Also the soundtrack is mind-bogglingly good, I don't know if it's possible for you to bump up the game audio in the LP for it in the future matt but it's just a joy. Every single boss theme is amazing(though one in particular I don't like on its own; in game it's great) and a lot of the normal music, exploration or otherwise, are at the very least good if not great. I've only ever bought two full priced soundtracks for games before undertale's; minecraft and ftl.

Yeah it's so strange, it's been forever since a game left me so thoroughly satisfied emotionally I just don't think I'll ever touch it again. I got kind of the same feeling when I played 'To The Moon' but that game was just an amazing story in a poo poo RPG maker skin, Undertale however was such a satisfying experience that I'm glad to have gone through, like a fond memory I don't feel the need to go back to it.

I think Earthbound is an overrated piece of crap and I enjoyed Undertale so I don't see the relationship. Not all quirky RPGs have to somehow fit the same formula.

I guess people find them both charming more than anything? What a strange post. Both Earthbound and Undertale have an extremely similar tone and atmosphere that is set by the sense of humor displayed throughout the game (i.e. quirky npc text/non-standard rpg enemy types etc.). People who like Earthbound don't because of its battle system of whatever, it all comes down to the tone and atmosphere the game presents. Undertale mirrors that and Earthbound is an extremely good comparison for Undertale insofar as there is any singular game comparison for it. Like, it should surprise no one that the creator of Undertale's only work before making the game literally was doing Earthbound ROM hacks and said in some interview that Earthbound is his most played game. The influence is everywhere, and I'm not sure who anyone could play both games and not think Undertale's creator took inspiration from Earthbound (which surprise he actually did). It has nothing to do with a striped shirt or black and white menus. For that matter, black and white menus are not some trope associate with Earthbound, its how all retro-RPGS displayed their menus, like Dragon Quest etc. e: Also anyone who legit lets public perception of games affect how much they enjoy the game are complete children. Something like Portal is no better or worse because it was well-received and spawned dumb memes or whatever. What type of person legitimately likes a game less because of its internet zeitgeist perception? That's something a crazy person does who is only playing games to talk about them on the internet instead of the intrinsic joy/fun the game itself provides you while you play it. It has its own sense of humor separate from Earthbound as well as characters and story, not to mention gameplay but that's not really a factor since both games aren't loved for it. I've just seen people writing off Undertale as being an Earthbound ripoff/clone from the constant comparisons, when the similarities are more loose than that.
