zoux posted:Ok, is there actually any research linking social media poo poo like facebook likes and twitter follows to any kind of electoral advantage? General rule of thumb is you see 3-5% pass through at every step So if you have 100,000 followers, 5,000 will see the post, 250 will click the link, and 12 will do the purchase/donation/whatever at the site. If you add more steps in there (like a sign up page before) you see an additional drop at each added step (hence the importance of design testing for conversion optimization, you need it secure to handle money but as open and clear as possible to reduce drops) So tl;dr version: no, social media isn't useful for direct electoral actions. It is more another mass media channel for messaging than a way to get action.

Tiler Kiwi posted:Their conduct is just the logical end result of a capitalist system. If you're not willing to crush an employees larynx with your thumbs with a demand they thank you, your shareholders will just gently caress off to reap the bloodied dividends of whatever feckless prats that are willing to believe they're great people while stomping on necks for profit. And nobody will actually care enough in the end to change anything. Similarly, when Wal-Mart raised their employee wages to $10 an hour, and then reported lower profits a few days ago, their stock took a dump and now there are Forbes and Bloomberg thinkpieces about what a disaster this is and proof that no other company should do this ever and how horrible it is for the poor workers.

NBA player Lamar Odom is in a coma fighting for his life because he took an herbal supplement with a dangerous ingredient at a brothel that interacted with some other drugs he was taking. It's an interesting story politically I think because it shows how loving titles the FDA is. You can basically sell whatever poo poo you want as an "herbal supplement" and get away with it. The FDA even knew this supplement contained the active ingredient of Viagra and urged consumers to throw it away and issued a warning, but it was still legal for sale. And you can sell homeopathic drugs in stores that do literally nothing and even have health insurance pay for them sometimes.

Arguably the racist histrionics would have been worse if he hadn't, the backlash stronger. Letting the republican party sit in its lovely diaper for everyone to see would be the 11th dimensional chess strategy, but thats probably bullshit.

"Let's disrupt Washington & create a small recession inside DC so we can have economic prosperity outside of Washington" - Jeb Bush, yesterday You know, there is just oh so much stupidity in this sentence, it astounds. The empty late stage capitalism buzzwords that are so meaningless yet he still manages to misuse. The delight in proposing devastating a city of 600,000 mostly black people (most of whom have nothing to do with the federal government) so he can advance his political agenda. Promising to create a recession when it's what his father and brother infamously did, harming generations. Treating a recession like a good thing because he and his are so insulated from the effects... Just so much stupidity as both a rhetorical choice, and that's without treating it like a policy proposal. It reminds me of the Chicago Tribune wishing for another Katrina to hit Chicago.

Politico: Jeb Cuts Back As always with this kind of story, the value isn't any fleeting bits of information, but in considering who wants this narrative out in the public. My guess is Rubio network, since it would have the same Florida people that bring out a lot of daggers here. That said, one interesting tidbit of verifiable (and this possibly accurate) nature: This loving clown dropped 4.8 million on ads in NH in the past 3 weeks, getting 60% of the political advertising. And in that time period he saw his polling average drop from 9% to 8.7% The completely unsupported statement that they are having trouble covering daily expenses I don't believe, but it being out there will piss Mr ! off and he can eat poo poo

Everyone in Washington DC knew the truth but as long as one party denies it the media wouldn't report the truth. Once McCarthy accidentally admitted it, then the media was free to say what they knew all along. It's why the worst gaffes in Washington are when you accidentally tell the truth: the media then gets to report on it as the truth instead of reporting on the controversy.
