It was the best I could find, sorry. Everywhere else the phone preview was too dark. The colours were much better IRL.

Simply Simon posted:Kale, cabbage, who cares...still, lemme look it up if kale is actually a German delicacy. I know this is from a couple pages back, but I wonder if this is a translation issue or something, because kale and cabbage are really, really different. FTR, this is kale. It has curly leaves and is tough and somewhat bitter. It makes good chips and is sometimes eaten in salad: This is cabbage. It's tender and bland, and is used raw in coleslaw, turned into sauerkraut, used to make cabbage rolls stuffed with sausage and/or rice, or served cooked with butter. It has little in common with kale except that they are distantly related green leafy vegetables.

For the record, lightly pickled vegetables like cabbage and carrots are awesome. I went to a Turkish restaurant nearby that had pickled vegetables like that as a side dish and they were great.

Kale is apparently more of a northern German thing (but definitely a...thing) and I might never have tried it myself, while cabbage is a southern German one (see: Sauerkraut). Whichever one, there are jokes about it being something you can't get into children, the smell while cooking will make your house unlivable, it's poor people food... So the kale hype was really funny to me. Excuse me for not making a clearer distinction .

They're all cultivars of Brassica oleracea. that is fascinating, especially since similar things have been done with most of the other members of the Brassica family, like Brassica Rapa, which is grown as Turnips, Napa Cabbage, and Rapini/Cime Di Rape/Broccoletti/Broccoli Raab(have had this a lot, it's a favorite of my step-dad and many of his family members, takes a little getting used to, but it's really good when prepared properly, especially in pasta)

I'm utterly confused at that suggestion and somewhat disgusted, but apparently it's a big thing where she's from in Nebraska. I don't know if I could bring myself to try it. It's just two things I can't put together in my head and thinking they would taste good, like toothpaste and OJ. Speaking from experience, this is a pretty caustic combination. I didn't have them at the same time, but I ate a couple of big cinnamon rolls and then made some chili burritos an hour later or so, and lemme tell you only do this if you wanna sound like a foghorn for the rest of the day.

It wasn't that you eat it together or anything like that, you just eat chili then eat a cinnamon roll for dessert. (in Iowa anyway) It's not bad.

My father grew up in Illinois and they used to get half a peanut-butter sandwich with chili, but like, you dip it in the chili. It gets you weird looks here in Texas, but peanuts and red meat go together pretty good (it's still a disgusting thing to do).

That sounds pretty tasty, as long as you use peanut butter that isn't too sweet.

I've had to teach myself what good food is like. Growing up, that was the peak of the week. We also had spaghetti sometimes, but loose corn was mixed with the super sweet spaghetti sauce. I still like corn in spaghetti sauce. Judge me.

I just got back from a holiday in Waikiki and I must say - Loco Moco is amazing. Also I found this restaurant/bar called Charthouse that has a pupu menu item that consists of marinated and grilled SPAM and rice with a hot sauce. I didn't take a photo because I hate seeing that kind of poo poo in restaurants but I think my partner took a pic. If find the photo I will post in here. It was pure bliss. EDIT: When I cook a steak I spread Vegemite on it while cooking. Not joking. Humphreys has a new favorite as of 10:24 on Oct 17, 2015 |

Australian Pizza Hut is currently doing a hot dog stuffed crust. So of course, I got one. Trip report - instead of being able to demolish my usual full pizza, I managed all of half of it. Around the dogs, there's uncooked crust. The hot dogs are bland and out of the ordinary. They give you a thing each of squeeze mustard and tomato sauce (Aussies know the one) so of course I squirted them on the pizza. Ultimately, the crust just makes it harder to eat. 7/10

Yeah you were trolled. Most of the time I spent in bars in Hawaii and when the locals discovered I was an Aussie, i spent a lot of time explaining that NO you do not spread it thick. You butter your toast then Vegemite for color if that makes sense (as little as possible). The rest of the bar talk was that we all dont give a poo poo about Jared Hayne.
