DOUBLE DAMAGE GAMES WAS FOUNDED IN 2014 BY TRAVIS BALDREE AND ERICH SCHAEFER.
Travis and Erich previously co-founded Runic Games, where we made Torchlight and Torchlight 2.

Before that, Travis created Fate in 2005 and was project and engineering lead on Mythos, before it was torn out of our hands in the Flagship Studios debacle of 2008. Erich was co-creator and lead designer of Diablo and Diablo II, then went on to lead Hellgate: London (blah blah Flagship debacle).

So we’ve been making big action-RPGs with big teams for a long, long time now.

Double Damage and Rebel Galaxy is a huge, well-needed, change of pace. It’s just us two. Not to detract from the excellent art and music contractors we are working with, but DDG is just us. We wanted to make smaller, quicker games (though I doubt people will find Rebel Galaxy to be small), in a way not accountable to investors or suits, and not responsible for managing big teams. We’ve had great, exciting careers so far, but Double Damage is the funnest time we’ve developing a game in… forever? We hope you’ll enjoy playing it!

Interesting is the implication that they managed to knock together this game in just a year (give or take), which is an incredible rate of production even accounting for the size of the game.

Things could be going better

Game is very good, but man mission rewards are a bit wonky. 1000 credits for clearing out an enemy base but 31k for diving into a besieged base to deliver something? Sure why not.

Still trying to get the hang of upgrade paths right now. Hitting the point where I have to raise a lot of money to upgrade my ship class so hopefully I can moderate that with just better turrets and stuff

sizuka2

Lurking. Always lurking.
Weapons get ~50% better per upgrade, cost goes up ~300%.

Defenses get balanced around that, so the price change is similar but the effectiveness upgrade is larger. Always max shields/deflectors/hull when available.

There's a sweet spot early on: get a fast ship (starter, or barracuda), get merchant's guild cargo extenders and a null-grav booster. That'll let you run basically any dead drop or delivery mission, especially if you pick up the merchant guild subsystem that cuts the time you're slowed by leeches in half.

By the time you're up against end-game dreadnaughts, this won't have enough dps even if you're at tier six on everything.

For dps... basically, the cheapest way to increase this is to max your broadside armament and get a ship with a lot of broadside ports. The merc guild offers some subsystems which increase range and decrease cycle time/charge time on the broadside, and those are cheap ways to boost it. N.b.: charging boosts accuracy, not damage. With a fully charged broadside, you can swat gunships or fighters; vs. dreadnaughts you just need to wait for the reload, not the charge.

Upgrade the turrets last in priority (unless you're deliberately going for a smaller ship with max-grade everything), though letting them lag 1-3 levels behind your ship's shields is plenty.

Upgrading broadsides costs about as much as upgrading a single turret, but with 10-20 broadside ports, delivers massively more damage than that single turret. (At low broadside port numbers, >5, the turret's constant automatic fire is a more reasonable trade.)

Wait until you get to the later systems, and start getting paid 1m credits for a dead drop mission.

I feel like one of the faster ways to progress is just to ignore your weapons, get a very fast ship, and do merchant guild missions. Go up to harder systems as quickly as you can upgrade your defensive gear and afterburners.

Beat it, bought a dreadnaught in celebration. Looking at my played time, I spent more than half of it in the first system. The veneer of space gameplay sort of rubs off after that first system high, as you figure out missions pay out better than any sort of self driven gameplay like trading or bounty hunting. Which is still a pretty space gamey thing, come to think of it.

Also destroyers seem like a trap class because it doesn't get enough firepower to back up its slowness relative to frigates. Dreadnaught firepower is hilarious but not really compelling enough to want to grind out Mk6 everything.

I dunno, the Arcturus never felt like it was lacking in ability to kill things.

But yes dreadnaught ships are total hilarity, even fighting huge swarms of enemy capital ships because you're unkillable and two shot basically everything in the game that isn't at least as big as you with just mk6 broadsides and mostly mk4/5 everything else.

Delivery missions spawn blockades as you may have noticed, culminating in surrounding the station with hostiles you aren't necessarily meant to deal with beyond blowing past on your way in and out. Like the whole appeal of corvettes and frigates is you can decide "nope, don't care" and just ignore stuff.

Oh yeah, I was always able to get INTO them. Regardless of why there are a bunch of ships around it.

Then I get a bit stupid and try to clear them out as a courtesy, which goes well up until enough remaining ships gather close enough to spawncamp the gently caress out of me. Which gets compounded by spitting be back out with an empty deflector and empty booster bar most of the time (you'd think paying for repairs would top those off as a courtesy :v:)

At the very least, I know it's my own fault for not just saying gently caress it and leaving in the first place :downs: But never fun getting a death by NPC spawncamping, even if your own idiocy lead to that situation.

The extra firepower was noticeable against corvettes and frigates, but the lower speed and maneuverability and bigger hitbox meant paying that much more attention to other destroyers or dreadnaughts to avoid getting caught flat footed in view of their broadsides, where a frigate (especially the Sturville) can decide "nah, I'm over there now" mid broadside from a bigger enemy. Maybe more of a testament to the Sturville and the quick boost than a detriment to destroyers in general.

The one obvious thing I wish they'd done is make the cargo extenders so they don't just make ship cargo holds trivial. Basically do two tiers of items, some with flat bonuses (in a range up to +12 or maybe +15) and then a second line with % boosts based on your ship's cargo space, like +50% up to +100%.

Try docking in a station and looking at the mission log to see if it shows up there? If you can't get them back you should post on the steam forums and attach your savegame file, I'm sure the devs would want to know about anything that blocks storyline progress.

zedprime posted:

The Sturville is hella good, but then again if your comparison is the Sturville you should be looking at the Minotaur which is better than the other destroyers, in the same way that the Sturville is better than all the other frigates. Mercs OP.

Otherwise I mostly agree that destroyers aren't great: the arcturus is slow, the manticore is under-gunned and dumb looking. I haven't used the Damocles, but the statline is only average and when fighting against pirates using those I've noticed they're quite large.

Yeah i shot them an email and they replied within 10 mins and its sorted now.

Turns out if you go through the gate to charon and turn straight back around the mission doesn't trigger properly and you get no mission indication on the map or log until you go back through the gate to charon and it picks back up.

I'm off the opinion that the priority upgrades in the game are actually defensive ones. Extra shields, armor, and deflectors go a very long way to letting you punch above your weight and keep repair bills at a minimum. The other thing that helps when fighting destroyers and the like when you're still in lower end ships is to abuse your speed and get behind them. Their options are incredibly limited if you hang out by their thrusters and just unload.
