What is the benefit of health savings accounts over something like medicare anyway? I don't know much about HSAs, but from what I understand, you take a portion of your own money, put it into this account, and then use whatever money you saved up in that account to pay for your medical bills. This seems pretty pointless to me because if it's your own money, why would you need to put it into an account to begin with? Can't you just pay your medical bills when you need to since, again, it's your own money to begin with? The only benefit from an HSA is that the money you save is not taxed. But even then, it's not THAT much of a huge saving, unlike say with medicare, where you get many times what you pay into it. Mr Interweb fucked around with this message at 22:52 on Oct 25, 2015 |

I know the joke is that doctors are idiots about anything not exactly in their field of expertise, but you'd think "planning around getting a horrible medical condition isn't something you can do" would be within their knowledge.

Do they think the $2000 from a health savings account is enough to cover health insurance premiums for a year, or do they actually believe $2000 can come close to covering yearly medical expenses for someone in an accident or with actual medical conditions? It's so obvious that they haven't seen a medical or insurance bill in decades and just picked a nice round number out of thin air. It's just like that ridiculous personal budget McDonald's put out a while ago that implied you can live well off of minimum wage as long as you have no childcare expenses, insanely cheap health insurance, a second job, and you don't need to heat your home or buy food. I'm assuming the "health care savings account" isn't going to get the negotiated prices either. So the medication I am currently paying $5 for is actually something like $300. They will go through that two grand in a month paying actual street price on medicine.

No. Carson openly admits it's not enough. That's why there's a way to take money from your family's accounts to help pay for your care.

Conservative democrats will always exist. They're called "democrats with fiscally conservative stances". Conservative voters didnt get the politicians to hold stances they want by going "welp, we expunged the Red Donkeys, guess we're Conservative Enough now!", we shouldn't do just that because blue dogs are gone.

Also Carson's plan (along with his hsa) is to repeal Obamacare. So that means you'll have the privilege, as someone who would have been covered under Medicare, to buy insurance out of your own pocket without any of the protections under Obamacare!

It's a drug called Humira and Entocort/Budesonide. Both are used for the treatment of Crohn's Disease. The Humira is once a week injections and the Entocort is 1 tablet a day. I think Entocort costs like 11 dollars a tablet. For a while I was at 3 tablets a day. So my prescription was around I think 1800 dollars a month. That's just two medications. I have other medications. Weird looking at the drug prices apparently my Entocort is 434 dollars a month but named Entocort is cheaper than a Generic. Maybe I'll get my money back. We're getting away with Imuran only right now but with the genetics test and flare ups it's clear we're going to be moving to Humira + other stuff soon. I'm sorry that you/your family's flare ups are that bad.

My wife slipped down some stairs which required $45,000 dollars in surgery ($2k after insurance which we pay $13k/year for), I'm sure in Ben Carson's America she would have died of cholera or something since we couldn't afford a surgeon that used sterile technique. Are all his policies this loving stupid?

I like the idea that whole plan comes from a factoid that medicare costs are $2000 per capita. Which completely ignores who is getting medicare benefits or the costs of administering the HSAs (or how they will collect interest, or the role of insurance companies...)
