Just one paddle for shifting both up and down? That's interesting. Also i wish I had an e-brake that wasn't a button on my steering wheel that I can lose track of. I was thinking maybe there is a way to turn the h-shifter into an e-brake using a rubber band strapped around the stick and the console portion of the h-shifter (talking about a g27) to pull it out of 4th gear and then having 4th gear bound to e-brake somehow. I should and see if that is possible

Automatic Minis sort of have that, and the auto rx8 too sort of. They both have paddles on both sides of the wheel. You pull in the paddles to upshift and push it out to downshift. The Mazda wasn't exactly like that, but it was similar. Both paddles are upshift and there's a little button on the wheel next to each paddle for downshifting. The WRC cars of that era had a ring that went a couple inches behind the wheel matching the diameter of the wheel that served the same purpose. Pull in to upshift, push out to downshift. Using a ring and that pushing pulling method means no matter where your hands are and no matter which way the wheel is turned you'll always be able to shift without having to think.

As for using a shifter as an e brake, the thrustmaster shifters (th8rs and th8a) both have an "analog mode" that turns it into a single axis analog stick that you can use as an analog handbrake. It's really good because you can modulate it. Plus, the shifters are separate USB devices so you can combine them with any wheel and they work great. Using them as shifters is great too. Better by far than the Logitech or fanatec shifters. Not quite as good as the clubsport shifters though.

Is that a challenge?
A word of warning, I basically wrecked the sequential mode of my G25 shifter using it as the handbrake in RBR back in the day to the point that it now jumps 2 or 3 gears at a time if I try to use it as a shifter.

That ring shifter seems really nice to have.

In other news I think I am getting a pretty good handle on the Escort Mk II. Placed first in a 6 stage rally, and on the first stage of a new rally on wales I was 8.7 sec faster than the closest person.

Just tossing in a reminder as I finished my runs for the Dirtygoons: a little less than 20 hours remain before it flips over to the next event (Wales, Group A) if anyone didn't get it in yet and wanted to.

Kind of hope the patch drops tomorrow so we don't have a mix of old and new car physics for the event since the Group A's are getting updated with it.

Followup: finished out the next Event in said Master's Championship and pretty easily snagged first with 4/5 upgrades (still down ~30 HP I believe). So I guess it's probably just an exceptionally lovely car without upgrades; not too surprising since it's stupid heavy and low on HP without any upgrades (think it's 2900+ lbs with ~230 HP to start). Just grabbed the Focus and it's 2954 lbs, 234 HP; I'm sure this'll be kind of rough the first few events as well.

More advice-y answer: Group B's have way more power than necessary and, as such, you probably spend less time with it floored (more so when upgraded... without upgrades you'll be much slower and spend more time on the gas) than any other class or else find yourself crashing into something very hard. That said, I doubt you should be not getting beyond third since Group B's have five (six?) gears and every rally (not necessarily every stage) has one or more places to open it up such that you should be at or near redlining in top gear (or should probably be tweaking your gear ratios).* In general: if you're never touching top gear, then you probably should adjust your gearing; on Wales, Greece, and Monaco your workhorse gears tend to be in the 2~4 range though (varies on car, of course) since they have fewer high speed straights and many lower speed corner sections.

* For example: I felt the E30 for last week's goon rally had stupidly bad default gearing for Greece due to way too big of a gap between 2nd and 3rd (putting you at awfully low RPMs unless you waited until the bitter end of revs to upshift) and 5th was beyond what you could reach on even the longest straights (pretty much only used 5th on steep downhill segments) so I found myself having a much better time after pulling the ratios for 3rd/4th/5th lower.

Did some times on Bidno Moorland and Kreuzungsring Reverse in the Impreza and Focus, and ended up with less than 2 seconds difference, but at the same time the Impreza felt much faster than when I first drove it, so maybe custom events do something to the cars? Or maybe the AI is just brutal in that class.

Also, using the handbrake in group B is cheating :colbert:

Custom Events use fully upgraded versions of the cars. Initially it had the fully unupgraded versions, but the community pointed out that was bad and pointless since a lot of people only use Custom Events to test cars before buying them (aka they want to see how it is fully upgraded) and they changed it.

Tried the Focus and its' first challenge is, finally after all this time, the full 12 stages of Finland which I haven't done yet (just a stage here or there in Dailies mostly). I couldn't get past the first one between the Co-Driver calls being too quiet (being fixed next patch), too early (being fixed next patch), and, most notably, the dashboard reflection in the windshield (which I'd read was bad in the bugs for Flying Finland when I went to report the Custom Championship reward bug) in the Focus is loving absurd. The previous times I'd driven it in online Dailies, all of them were cloudy and it didn't seem so bad. The first stage of my Finland is sunny and I'm literally blinded for entire straightaways driving into the sun as shown below:
The view out the front of the car for sometimes 10+ seconds on some parts of the stage:

The car turned so you can see how bright it is out the side window (aka what it'd look like in every other car):

So, uh, hopefully that one gets fixed in the patch too or I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to change my preferences to allow hoodcam again (:sadwave: 5% bonus and preferable camera location) to finish the rally because driving blind is not cool.*

Driving blind aside, the Focus does seem more perky unupgraded than the Impreza did and it being a hatchback, while costing style points, is much better for negotiating at high speeds without the rear end end catching anything harmful.

Do the wipers actually do anything outside of rainy stages and the pits in Wales? I've noticed my windscreen getting muddy occasionally, but I'm usually too busy looking at the road to notice any difference after the wipers give a quick swipe.

*RINGS THE UPDATE BELL*

MODERN MASTERS IS OUT

As always, Codemasters are slow getting the changelog out so await further information. However it's a 6.5Gb patch so expect the usual hefty dose of fixes, changes and content.

E: Here's the changelog you get in game. Apparently putting this on the blog or Dirt forums was too hard. ANYWAY.

quote:

BIG STUFF
- The R4 class! Subaru Impreza STi Spec C R4 and Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X
- Expanded 2000s class! Ford Focus RS Rally 2007 and Citroen C4 Rally
- V2 handling given to Group A and B
- Adjustable seats!
- Damaged parts run a higher risk of failure if they're not repaired fully

SMALL STUFF
- Stage distance and elevation change are now shown in the menus and loading screens. Hey look
- You can now change wiper and headlight control to manual
- On-screen timer added for the last minute of rallycross races
- You can change preferences in online lobbies and service areas
- Grid order and assists can be changed by the host for online rallycross
- THE VISUAL STEERING WHEEL WILL NOW MATCH YOURS!! Set the wheel setting to "wheel only" in your profile preferences.

I did a quick video driving the new Impreza in Germany to show off the new visual wheel.

I'm moving basically every seat in every car forwards a lot. The default height is fine for me but every car it's set way too far back by default.

Also worth remembering, they're not doing a full FFB update until every car has the V2 handling. So cars with the V2 handling (now everything except F2, Group B RWD and Hillclimb) are going to feel pretty weak in default FFB until that gets done. There'll probably be an update to Impact at some point to fix that in the meantime but worth bearing in mind before complaining about weak FFB in those cars.

I love the new handling but its such a huge downside that you can get air on so many bumps and the FFB is weak. (sometimes its almost like your nose generates lift in the air) I really hope they prioritize getting that fixed.

New cars are interesting. The straight line traction on the c4 is pretty cool, you can basically floor it in first and second without wheel spin. Haven't tried the R4 WRX but the EVOX is SUPER friendly and calm, which could be nice for the learning curve.

The current implementation of FFB is pretty great, IMO. I've noticed that when the suspension is heavily compressed, the steering becomes heavier. It really provides a great sensation of wrestling cars through ruts and corners.

VW Polo, Citroen DS3, Ford Fiesta RS and Hyundai i20 are what Wikipedia lists as the 2015 WRC cars, so the Fiesta we have in game is still running rallies but Mini dropped out after 2013. Of the actual Modern Masters cars, the R4 class is WRC2, aka the WRC feeder system. So they're intended to be a stepping stone to the full WRC cars. Then of the 2 new 2000s cars the C4 is what Loeb drove to 4 WRC drivers titles, and the Focus RS is what broke Citroen's manufacturers streak in 2006-7. It is cool how those cars have some historical significance.

Given only 2 drivers have won the WRC drivers championship since 2004 (9 years running for Loeb basically killed it) I don't blame people for paying no attention to real world rallying.
