The group I play with generally have our Stormvermin game on point, but we still struggle with rogres. In general we can play the block ddr game with the ogre, but it takes ages to take them down. Is there any specific weapon type that is best at killing them? Armour Piercing? Fire bombs? I like that they are a threat but clever play can deal with them. I also like it when you have an elf shooting at one and you see it's face become a pincushion.

most effective thing i've seen so far is for someone with a potion sharing trinket to quaff a strength potion near the group and then have everyone lob bombs at it

Potions potions potions. If strength just mash fast attacks on elf/witch doctor, although rapier charged attack is aces with either potion. If bright mage just unload everything and max out your heat bar then go hit it. I haven't had problems on hard with rogres at all if two people use pots.

Playing on nightmare, we generally use all our bombs as a staggered opening salvo against the ogre. Each hit will stagger him for a moment, giving any wizard, witch hunter, or elf more time to use up their ammo/heat before he can close in. Once he's actively engaged everybody downs what potions they have left (strength potions should be downed beforehand to buff the bombs) and goes to town. Most classes will generally do best by just spamming their quick attack, since you don't need armour piercing and the bump in raw damage between quick and heavy is often not significant enough to make up for the time spent charging it up. Another important thing is that everybody should be using their melee weapons first and foremost. They generally do more damage, allow you defend yourself immediately if the ogre switches targets to you, and perhaps most importantly you won't be stuck uselessly running after a retreating ogre because it's charging after that goddamn elf who's shooting it from across the battlefield. Whoever is the target should always try to lead it back to the rest of the group, and to position themselves in such a way that a hit won't make them fly very far.

Also having one guy float around to try and intercept chaff so the others don't get perforated is pretty important. With a witch hunter carrying pistols they can be well worth the risk when it's specifically targeting another player. Once it switches to the WH, he's got to get a guard up, and with that damage it will switch.

The difference between expert jump throwing and just running with the sack is nowhere near the gulf in ability to bash rats. It's the thing they suck least at (assuming they can follow arrows and not throw the grain off the map).

Did they do something to the spawnrates lately? Just helped a friend with a few normal missions for the campaign and every single short/silver mission we did had Wheat & Chaff levels of spawns. Two to four stormvermin per pack, three to four specials and a never ending horde. We literally didn't get a single moment of silence as the soundtrack blared the horde music non stop as rats kept spawning during the entire run of Waterside.

So why IS the elf in Ubersriek anyway? I figure the WH and BW are together to a trial hearing, the soldier is coming home from a tour of duty and I think the dwarf is in the same regiment as him? To me, the elf is just here and she's smug about a lot of things and then she dies and nobody cares when she does

WH and Soldier are bringing in BW iirc. Elf is there because magic and killing things do something. Dwarf, no reason given so far. The BW actually asks the dwarf why he's there - but the WH breaks in and tells them to shut the hell up. I think that covers it

Bardin is in Ubersreik because he has a treasure map to a lost Dwarven Hold with massive treasure, however the map is written in ancient Dwarf runes that almost no one can understand, but he's heard a rumor that an antique shop in the Dwarf Quarter of Ubersreik has a book with these same style of runes, and might provide a starting point for translation. At some point during the Skaven attack, he manages to find the time to investigate the store, it was torched by the rats. :smith:

The Elf is in Ubersreik because she has some kind of uncertain curse and she maybe has visions of the future. Killing Skaven seems to factor into this curse (possibly a way to break it). Sienna comments that every time she kills a skaven, she absorbs magic from her surroundings (but isn't certain what happens if she kills a non skaven) and also comments at one point that Kerrilian is counting her kills. The Elf also gets very angrily insistent that Bardin leave some kills for her as one of her "fellow playing is on a killing spree" comments.

The Dwarf is looking for some old dwarf hold, and the elf can see the future and she's been preparing snarky insults for years now and isn't going to miss out on saying them.

Solider is hired by the WH to escort his prisoner. Dwarf is at the city to buy a book that he thinks might help him read a treasure map and hopefully find backing for the expedition to find said treasure.

No idea why the elf is around but she is some kind of cursed exile and that's pretty much her whole backstory...

Soldier is actually not really there to help the WH escort the Wizard. The WH doesn't even need to be escorting her, he's doing it because he's a gentleman (underneath the cranky old man). The reason the Solider is there is he request leave to see his family and it was denied, and WH used his extraordinary powers to requisition him, so Solider could see his family as they passed through Ubersriek.

Yeah, the characterization of the cast is really great. Even Kerrilian, if you assume she's supposed to be an insufferable edgy-teenager Elf equivalent.

Kruber: "Have you travelled far, Elf?"
Elf: "I have walked through kingdoms of shadow and legend your language has no name for."
(beat)
Sienna: "She means 'yes' I think."

She desperately tries to act aloof and mysterious and they just don't give a drat. :allears:

That said, gently caress the Elf, because she has one of those "idle conversation during quiet bits" moments with Bardin (who seems extremely relaxed for a Dwarf) where she starts taunting him about a Wood Elf ambush on a group of Dwarves and pisses him off to the point where he demands she fight him.
