There's also a difference between "the fights in this show are good, which makes for exciting action sequences" and "war and murder are unironically good and cool things IRL." :v:

That is really the approach I take with war fiction that is trying to be somewhat serious. Even in real life, I find tanks and warships and airplanes fascinating but I don't want to get caught up in all the "awesome!" mentality and ignore what these weapons were built for. It's also why I find most of Black library's 40k War porn uncomfortable because it is stripped of the irony that permeates the setting and just settles on bloodshed.

A question wrt Origin Part 2: how is the english dub? Is Kirk Thornton still mumbling as he tries to sound like a hardass?

I think taking it on a show by show basis is probably the best course of action. Mobile Suit Gundam's politics towards war are quite different than Gundam SEED's for example. I would argue they're much better too, and is one of the reasons I don't care for SEED as it exists in a very cynical post 9/11 approach to violence and intervention. Gundam, as well as all military sci-fi in general, exists under the banner of American military hegemony. In a Japanese context, the worst stuff tends to run the gamut from being dreadfully naive to outright pining for the days where their military could go out and kill a lot of people.

I generally dislike military fighting machines of all sorts, fictional or otherwise, because it helps reinforce certain narratives that our defense industry would love to keep going. It's all usually based on a buncha horseshit too, as one could see if you've ever read any thread glorifying the A-10 on these forums or elsewhere.

On the flip side, this interview with Tomino has an interesting quote about the 1/1 Odaiba statue in that he regards the big gaudy thing as a standard to peace because of its "toy colors". Now that's an interesting thought, as the last 2 decades of UC have very much tried to put the robots into a more "realistic" mode, or rather something that isn't a standard to any sort of peace but instead a piece of commodity fetishism that helps to make people think the JSDF should be remodeled into something a bit more aggressive or that the F-35 is not a tremendous waste of money, resources, and lives.

they actually have never tried very hard to offer character goods which is lame because there's a huge untapped market for it, they just wanna sell to the toy robot crowd more

i disagree, in the gundam shows i like i feel like it's generally pretty even between the visuals and the writing. sometimes i watch more for the visuals than the writing (gundam build fighters, unicorn)

the good gundam are turn a and war in the pocket

Sharkopath
May 27, 2009

war in the pocket is entirely a character drama exploring a single dude and his relationship with a kid that looks up to him and you could excise the setting entirely and the story would be the same, and that universality is to its benefit

i watched like 10 episodes of turn a before finally conceding that it wasn't for me and stopping

not that it really matters unless you want to get into the semantic difference between "a good show" and "a show that i enjoy"

tbh the only reason i stuck out with turn a for 5 hours was because i liked the robots and setting a lot

I wanna say they did some of that for SEED since it attracted a crowd that'd be into that? Might be misrembering tho

But they haven't tried since then, definitely a missed opportunity there

They pushed character merch really hard for the SEED shows and it sold like gangbusters. They tried to bottle lightning again with 00 and do the same thing except it didn't do nearly as well; it wasn't coincidental that 00's endings were Pretty Boy Gundam Meister Fashion Catwalk followed by Pretty Boy Gundam Meisters Hanging Out On A Beach Giving Each Other Haircuts.

i dont think actively planning around characters you can sell is the right mindset either because there's no real actual path to predict what makes a character popular, lots of the time people latch onto minor characters because of some small facet that they identify with.

its better to just write a bunch of cool characters and see what happens.

I agree with you, actually. I'm just saying that they most definitely have pushed character merch based around Gundam shows as a major part of their merchandising before.

For weird merch: You can get pens with Char and Amuro torsos on the top that salute to pop the writing bit out. There's a Haro with waggly ears, a Zaku head with a panning monoeye and a Z'Gok claw that opens up too. I think the dumbest thing I've seen is a LaPlace Box memo holder.

Years ago when I ordered a robot damashii I got a Zeta mechanical pencil which is one year older than I am as a free bonus. I guess we just don't get to see a lot of the child-centric non-kit merch.

Oh good. I like Thornton as a voice actor, generally, but I prefer when he's given the chance to emote rather than his moody characters. He's great as Gato in 0083 but I never liked him in Samurai Champloo. The first Origin film he's half good (when he's shouting and staring down Kycellia Zabi) and half annoying (when he's in disguise at the nightclub)

That reminds me.

In the Plot to Assassinate Gihren manga, don't they have a store selling Zeon model kits, with one of the best sellers being Zaku I models carrying gas grenades, primed and ready to murder civilians?

Because that seems like the kind of store that would have a colony drop tablet stand.

No it's the opposite. Almost no one buys the gas grenade one, so they use trying to buy it as a secret code. I think at least, I could be misremembering.

MSG and its "spiritual successor" have clear ideas of war but what about Wing and 00, the other two most alike Gundams? You said show by show basis, after all. I never could understand what 00 was getting at, especially since CB's terrorism ended up working perfectly.

Until Season 2 anyway....

He was also Tamahome in Fushigi Yuugi.

Sadly I don't think he liked being a voice-actor much and was just using it as a springboard into the business. Snake seems to have been the exception.
