My wife and I rented it awhile back at Redbox when Comcast went out because some dipshit in our addition put in new landscaping, cut the line and killed cable on one side of the street for 3-4 days. There are a lot worse ways to spend an hour and a half, but it isn't nearly as entertaining as Taken. Especially when we did a double-feature with Kingsmen: The Secret Service which is a pretty fun watch.

A friend made me see Taken 3 in the theater. One of the worst movies I've seen in a long time at a basic level, not even in a fun way. There was a whole chase sequence where none of us knew (or cared) who was in which car.

Taken 3 is PG-13, which is all that needs to be said. The entire reason why Taken was so successful was because it was such a violent thrill ride. Taken 2 was especially bad because it was shot for R and then edited down to PG-13, so the final fight is nonsensically edited so that the big baddie is basically face-palmed to death.

Looked into it, it was indeed PG-13. Still nowhere near an R.

I remember seeing the first taken and thinking it was the dopest poo poo, then I saw that it was edited down for the US and I was insulted by proxy we should all be allowed to witness that murder parade in its full glory

It's actually kind of mind-boggling how bad the Taken sequels are. You wouldn't think it'd be that hard of a concept to get right.

The first Taken is extremely simple, and nobody's saying its Die Hard or anything, but its a formula you'd think could be recreated fairly easily. The nosedive in quality really is almost impressive, it takes a lot of mistakes in different areas to gently caress-up that badly, and they did it twice!

I have seen The Devil's Advocate before and I'm sure we've discussed it already but I unironically enjoy it. Everyone is hamming it up especially Pacino (does he even have a different acting style?), and I dare say that even though he is doing an accent and he is still Keanu, I think it is Keanu Reeves' best acting. Also I never noticed the insanely bad green screen work in the party scene where Keanu goes outside to talk to the redhead woman. Goddamn it is jarring and odd.

Coaaab posted:As someone who isn't at all familiar with the subject, what criticisms do you have of gay cinema? Trite, formulaic, usually poorly acted, and almost always only about white people. If your only exposure to gay people was through American gay cinema, you would think homosexuality was something only very attractive young white guys do. The plots break down to either A) A coming out story B) A romantic comedy or C) something about a noble, suffering AIDS victim. Usually it's some amalgamation of the three. Even if its much the same plot, it doesn't doom a movie. But the problem is "gay audience" isn't a demographic that makes for blockbusters, so the budgets are usually minuscule, and the filming/scripts/acting usually reflect that, so they end up looking just this side of a film student's project. And I realize there are exceptions, and I know that the majority of movies are dreck, regardless of genre. But if you take the worst mainstream romantic comedies/coming of age movies and compare them to their gay equivalents, it's like an Orson Welles/Uwe Bolle faceoff.
