Next real update is gonna be big.

1) Big battle against the Sand Dragon. First real boss battle of the game.

2) Not one, but TWO new party members. You can thank me later for spending my money on the both of them.

3) The biggest change, I have a new recording setup! I lost the hard drive and USB connector to my previous hard drive, and it has disappeared to lands unknown. Last week I decided to replace things from the ground up. New recording device (the Elgato GameCapture HD), new hard drive, and new USB connector. What's new about it? Pseudo-1080p recordings! It's still technically recording at 720, but it looks so much better (and my old device recorded at 720). There's a lot more color, for one thing. One thing I kinda didn't like about my old hardware was the colors tended to be pretty dull, which does not suit a colorful series like Atelier, not at all.

Still, AverMedia GameCapture HD, you done good. I've been using that since before the Arland thread got posted, and it has recorded hundreds of hours of anime RPGs and stabby games. Here's to you (2012-2015). You traveled to three countries and served me well. I could still use you, but your age is done.

Music:

Sandy Sea -Cave-
Sometimes you want to change the tempo a little to fit different instruments, but you can't! It's hard to find a fitting composition and style for these arrangements. (Achiwa)

Sandy Sea -Trading Post-
This completes this group of compositions. I look forward to seeing just what kind of impression they make in the finished game! (Achiwa)

Flame
This character theme aims to depict the mismatch between Homura's small, cute stature, and his attempts to seem big. (Achiwa)

Attractive Beach Queen
I wanted to make at least 1 novelty track for comical situations... And got this. It's supposed to be ska plus The Ventures... But I think fans of both will want to beat me up for saying that. (Achiwa)

Those Who Challenge the Twilight
This was used along with Asano's track in a preview video. Yet another arrangement of the opening. I didn't want to hold anything back, considering I was borrowing someone else's melody. (Yanagawa)

The first preview video, actually. This track, along with another song to be heard later in the game, was used in that video. This is one of my favorites on the OST, but it only plays over that one scene where Lotte and Stera go to the Union about the dragon.

Bonus Bonus

As promised, artistic exerpts from the Atelier: Dusk series artbooks. All of them are really high-quality and colorful, and I'm glad I bought them.

Atelier Ayesha artbook 1

Atelier Ayesha artbook 2

Atelier Ayesha artbook 3

Atelier Ayesha artbook 4

The most interesting bits from the book. Also, in the meantime between now and the next update, take a look at number 2. What would be your favorite alternate character designs from Ayesha for the main cast?

Ayesha: since she has so many, I'll choose 3. On the second row, I'd be cool with the third one from the left, and on page 83, first Ayesha from the left on the first row who looks like Nio. Final Ayesha would be the first Ayesha on the next row down.

Wilbell: hood instead of a hat might be interesting, but the small green-haired Wilbell I'd actually prefer over the final product. Call me a weirdo.

Regina: if I had to choose (and it's my challenge), blonde Regina would be alright.

Linca: just like Ayesha, she has a ton of concept arts, and I'll choose 3. Green-clothed Linca with the green hat would be awesome, but I'm also partial to the Linca second from the right in the second row. Next row, I guess number 6. Maid Linca I'm sure was just Hidari spitballing.

Juris: not a whole lot of variation, but I'll roll with Wild Man Juris, first from the left in the second row.

Keith: lot of strange stuff here, but let's see. I'll pick two alternates. I'll choose Cape Keith (third from the right in the second row). But I'll cheat a bit and look at alternate colors of his final outfit. G would be my favorite among that group. Also check out Internet Dude Keith at the bottom there with the fedora and scarf.

Nio: I really like Nio's final outfit, and I'm not real partial on any of the rough designs, but I guess I'd go with first from the right in the second row.

Marion: getting into the DLC characters now. Marion's final design I like a lot more than any of the concepts, but gun to my head, I'd go with A in the first row.

Odelia: first Odelia design on that page by a mile. Also bonus look at what a male Odelia would look like.

Harry: said I'd only go with the playable cast, but I'd be a drat fool not to point out Ben Franklin Harry at his section.

There is a lot of neat stuff that's hidden under Japanese that'd I'd just love to translate before I submit the archive request, including artist commentary over the event CGs. Another example would be Nio's Diary at the end of the book. I assume it's complete fluff, but it would be neat to see what manner of fluff it is.

Literally the best song on the OST, and my most listened to track. It's just so good.

Part XI: The Decisive Side of the Great Confrontation

Music: Stop the Sand Dragon

This is as close as we can get the ship. Dad is going to take the ship around these rocks, but we have to be ready to meet him.

Uh.... I thought we were going to fight the dragon on the ship?

Right, but the Corporation's ships are going to be going around the rocks to draw the dragon toward us. Once the dragon is in position, that's when we attack.

So why aren't we going on the ship?

Teo is the only person who needs to be on the ship. In case things go badly, we need to know how to retreat from the dragon.

Oh. That makes more sense, and there might be some nice materials around here, but we can't get more supplies unless we return to Stellard.

Right. Let's not exhaust ourselves fighting these monsters.

Hey Shallie, what are you doing there?

Oh... I saw some hunters talking about digging valuable things out of the ground, so I thought I might give it a try.

Valuable things, huh...?

Music: Stella -2-

Music: Sweep -2-

Let's work together and crush these monsters!

How's that!?

(Ship ruins? Maybe...)

I can feel the Sand Dragon around here...

Let's be careful everyone!

The Sand Dragon should be just ahead...

Alright everyone, the plan is set! No turning back!

Hurricane

Alright! Let's get going!

Music: Flying Clouds, Drifting Haze

Uwawa... It's so big!

Don't worry, we can do this!

Dad! Is the ship going to be okay!?

It'll be fine! Focus on the dragon!

Water hurts it a lot! We have to break its defenses and hit it hard!

I'll support everyone with my pilebunker. Focus your attacks and defeat the dragon!

Ugh, what is it doing!? Hold on!

The ship will hold, but this is gonna hurt! Everyone, hang on to something!

Shallie! Jurie!

Don't worry, it's going to be fine.

That was embarrassing...

Looks like it dug itself into the rocks so long so many have attached to its back. It's amazing this ship can take so much.

Sorry, I need a break.

I've got this. Here I come!

I didn't know it could be this tough... Ugh, we're going to need to defeat this thing soon.

I told you, I won't let you get hurt.

I know it's hard, everyone, but let's just keep it up! It looks weak!

That's it! Kortes, finish it!

I'm on it!

Alright!

We did it!

I can't believe it...

We...

Defeated a dragon...

Yeah!! We did it!

We really won...?

Is it really over?

Whoa. Like legendary heroes. This power.

Miss! We are victorious!

Yes! Thank you, Teo.

That was easier than I thought it would be. I wonder if Solle and Escha have something to do with it...

We should ask them later.

Yeah, I suppose. Everyone seems pretty happy at the moment.

Now then, miss, shall we head back to Stellard?

Yeah... Wow, I'm still kind of amazed we did it. How about Stellard's ships?

The Sand Dragon was lured out, just as we planned, and all of Stellard's ships got away safely. Many of them will probably make it back before we do.

Thank goodness...

Victory lap

Hey! You did it, you guys!

Hehe, you saw?

Gimme a break, I can't see that far from the harbor. One of the Corporation's smaller ships saw the battle and got back before you did. The captain headed straight to the Union and Corporation to spread the news.

Ohhh...I was kinda hoping to tell you myself.

Heh. Oh, Shallistera.

The Sand Dragon has been slain, and Stellard should be safe again.

Yes! We're so grateful! I promise that from now on, the Union will do everything it can to help Lugion Village.

Thank you so much!

This is still just the beginning.

But, we're making progress. There's no need to worry.

Kortes and Teokhuga, right? Thank you, for today. You have my gratitude. Hey, how's the ship holding up? Looks fine to me.

That Sand Dragon couldn't break this ship if it wanted to. The ship has almost never been better, but it did take a few hits when the dragon threw a big chunk of stone into the side.

Jeez! But, it still looks great.

Of course. Lugion Village is famous for its shipbuilders. We can build a ship better than anyone.

Heh, that's for sure. Well then, I think a big party is in order for tonight. Everyone's invited! This is a new day for Stellard!

Sir, we've confirmed the death of the Sand Dragon. The fleet should be arriving back in Stellard soon.

Hmm... Any losses?

None.

Seems I underestimated Shallie. So we succeeded in defending Stellard..

Yes.

I'm sure Raoul is going to bring this up for a while. Still, there's no arguing with results like this. It may even be time to think about *that*.

...

Music: Miru iro no Hoshi

Admit it Miruca, you were scared.

Jurie...

Hey, why do you have to say that to her? I know Miruca better than you do, and trust me, she wasn't scared.

Hey, there's no shame in admitting it. It was scary, even though I knew we could do it.

I wasn't scared. I'm just tired from the adventure. Maybe I'm not...

You've got what it takes to be a great hunter like me, maybe even better with your knowledge of Imbuing.

Hm...

(At least the Union will be fine with people like this working for it.)

Hey Solle, why don't you share some of those with us?

No. These are sweets only I enjoy, and you'd have to ask the Homunculi. They made them.

... They do look good...

So then I was like "Logy!" but he mixed it in anyway. The explosion made a huge mess all over the atelier, and it took us days to clean it. Mr. Grumman was so upset... I'm so glad I could get away for a little and stay at my house in the orchard.

That Logy... You know, after traveling with me, you would think he would appreciate magic more.

Oh, he always said he never trusted anything he couldn't test or experiment with. You know him...

Yeah, I know that kind of guy. But after seeing things like this...

You'd think even a guy like Logy could understand!

Ah! How do you do that?

Hehe, the secrets of a great witch.

And. Like that. I defeated. Dragon!

Shiny...

Well yeah, I mean, now that the Sand Dragon is defeated, the Union has some big expansion plans.

Are you thinking of sending members to the ruins to the east? Not many people have been there.

I still have to discuss it with a few people, but there's a definite chance.

And how about the new members of the Union? I've seen their ship before, but the owner wasn't there.

Her name is Shallistera. Seems she goes out a lot on adventures.

Someone that young, coming all this way... She's pretty amazing.

Amazing, huh? Yeah, I can see that.

Yes, the young miss is an inspiration to the entire village. Neither of you probably realize how many people are counting her. She's assuming an incredible task, and she's performed it well.

She is impressive, but don't you think you and Kortes should do more for her? She's already got so much on her plate, hardly seems fair to make her do all that.

Believe me, we put too much pressure on her, but neither I or Kortes can do alchemy at all. She's the only one with great talent for it in our clan.

Just like Colseit, huh Escha?

Well, not exactly, but it's pretty close.

Um...can I have one?

No. I need all of these for energy. You're still young, so you should have plenty of energy.

Not enough to deal with Shal every day.

Hm. Good point. Very well, you may have a couple.

Oh, Homura. What brings you here?

Sharing. Sweets. Important. Part of. Friendship.

I suppose so...

Why do you think Solle gets along with the homunculi so much?

Well, you may not know it, but Solle is an incredible maker of sweets. Some of his treats are just delicious, and I guess the Homhoms can just look past his scary face. Come on! Maybe we can get some his sweets, too.

Everyone looks so happy!

Stellard really came together today. It's unusual to see a night with such joyous celebration.

Yeah... I'm so happy...!

It was all thanks to you, Shallie. Even Raoul mentioned it.

No, it's thanks to everyone on the hunting team, and those who were helping us.

I still can't believe how amazing it is... You came from so far away, yet you helped fight a dragon when people asked. That's not a common trait...

I guess not. But I wouldn't have any regrets, even if I failed.

Why?

Well, I've spent a lot of time up until now following along. Because I'm the chief's daughter, because I can use alchemy, and be the next chief... Everything I needed to do was already planned out for me, and I never knew any better. That dragon fight was the first thing I decided to do on my own. I made my own choice, and it went well. What a relief!

I see... (So she's the complete opposite of me, huh...) So what are you going to do now?

We still haven't found anything to help with the drought in the village... I'll keep looking around for a fix. Because of today, it seems like Raoul is going to start helping... And we can all move forward!

Yeah! I'll help too! Let's save Lugion Village together!

Oh! Thank you, so much.

So ah, what do you want to do once you've saved the village?

Huh?

A side effect of spending so much time with Kortes is that I've developed a love for travel.

That sounds great!

But...

...Eh?

Today also showed me it can be hard to get people to accept someone they're not used to. That's why, after saving the village, I want to work to become someone even more worthy of being chief. I wouldn't want anyone to ever feel ashamed that I represent them.

Hmm...

So what's YOUR dream, Shallie?

Ehh? I, uh... My dream... Is... To fly... I guess.

To fly?

Yeah! Like... On a broom! Like my master! Does that...make sense? I mean, I know I would have to make something with alchemy, and have fun anywhere I wanted...

Hehe, that makes sense. It sounds like you.

Wha? Really?

Yes! Once you can fly, please, take me along sometime!

Oh, totally!

Is that why you're training with Wilbell? To learn how to fly?

Well, kinda... She also really helps me out, so I want to repay her.

Do you want to learn magic? It sounds like it might be kinda tough...

You think so?

Eh??

Good morning, Shallie.

Wha!! Shallie?! Oooh, right, I stayed over here last night.

Hehe, you were sleeping pretty well... Do you feel like you got some rest?

Yeah. How about you?

I feel wonderful.

What're you gonna do now?

I need to study what's going on in this world right now... What's happening to it... That seems like the next logical step to saving the village.

Alright. I'll help out. Just let me know if you need anything.

Okay... Wow! I feel like I can do anything with you!

I feel like everything will turn out just fine if it's with you, too. We can do this, together!

The distant frontier

I suppose... I've heard it's been quite a few decades since anyone last travelled there.

I'm sure the situation has changed a lot since then.

True, but I think it's worth looking at if it gives us a hint about solving the water crisis.

I suppose I could send Escha...

Wha? Me? Really?

Wait a minute, you're not sending her off on her own, are you?

Despite her appearance, Escha is quite the skilled alchemist.

Still, we can't supply food...

But you need water, and combat supplies...

I can make those too.

...Well how do you travel?

I'll give you one guess.

...Okay, do whatever you want.

Alright. I'm sorry to have to ask, but you mind investigating this?

Sure, but I want you to do all the paperwork I've got piled up...!

Absolutely not, you do that before you leave.

Aghh.

This isn't a vacation...

Hello...

Hello, Shallie!

Ah, you're here.

Thanks for the other day. I mentioned there was a good chance of victory, but I didn't realize with how little damage.

Because everyone worked together.

I guess. So what do you need?

Uh, I just thought there might be something I could help with.

We can't come up with stuff on the spot every day. We'll let you know when we decide on something.

You can practice your alchemy in the meantime!

Remember, the basics are just as important!

Solle, are you ready to make a decision about that idea?

Yes, I have. I've decided to go ahead with it.

I still say you shouldn't, but it's your call.

Oh, hello Shallies.

Hello, Mr. Solle... Are you going somewhere?

No, I actually had some business with you.

Huh, with us?

What!? You, Mr. Solle!?

...Is that so surprising?

I-I'm a little surprised too... Why did you decide this?

Escha was a little responsible for it, during the time she was working in Colseit. But the larger reason is that there are many things I cannot properly grasp by just reading reports at a desk. I'd like to actually get out and see things with my own eyes.

Mr. Solle... You really are serious.

This is my job.

Huh? I think you're just that kind of character.

Regardless, please let me know when you're departing on an investigation.

Okay, I understand.

Um...how will you fight?

The homunculi do a lot more than just reproduce the items you use outside of Stellard. They are skilled in a wide variety of skills, and I plan to use them effectively on future expeditions.

(Using...the homunculi to fight?)

Oh, by the way, Shallistera. I heard you were the one who fulfilled my request for a Stellapearl.

Yes, how was it? Did it turn out well?

The city I was in previously didn't have such a crunchy confection. It was very dynamic. It wasn't too sweet, so it's definitely not for everyone. But, I'm not one who minds either way. I'm surprised alchemy can create treats with such texture.

Uh... You don't really need to look into it that much...

Of course I need to. I'd never had it before, and I didn't want to hold anything back. The nut on top was a decent accent, too. It tasted a little different from a walnut.

U-Um...

There were a few flavors for sweets in Colseit too. They have many apples, so fruit themes were common... But I understand how to make Stellapearls now. I can make them whenever I want.

Ohh, I see... I'm glad we helped...?

Well then, see you later!

I've managed to negotiate an increase in supplies you can take out in the field. Taking more items will help you fulfill more and more jobs. So...

Yes! I'll do even more!

This is a request from my master!

You're going to take it? If you are, I'll explain it for you. The request we received is a search for magical catalysts in the region.

Magical catalysts... Like what?

From what I was told, it's called Liecester Meterorite Iron. It falls from the sky, apparently.

It falls from the sky... Does that really happen?

No idea. But there're legends about it, and it comes up in some books too. Also... Around here, there're craters all over the place where they say stars have fallen. Some are bigger than Stellard. If you hunt around there, you might find what we need. Although apparently, they look a lot like regular rocks... Anyway, good luck. Try not to disappoint our client.

Okay, I'll do my best!

You know, I think we picked up some of them when we were in the Sand Dragon's nest. Are these the rocks, Raoul?

Hey, yeah, they sure look like them. The client wanted four of them, so here you are.

Whew...

Hello, Escha.

Oh! Shallies! You came at the perfect time.

Huh? For what?

I'm actually planning to open here, but there's so much to do... Ahhh!!

Oh, are you okay?

Yeah, I'm fine, just a little tired. Anyway, do you mind lending me a hand?

Yes, of course! (I heard Escha is an excellent alchemist, but she's also so easy to talk to...)

Don't mention it...

I'll open my shop soon, so please come by again when you can!

Okay! I look forward to seeing what kind of stuff you have to offer!

Oh, Shallies! I have something else to tell you! It's really exciting!

Hello, Escha. What's...so exciting?

What's up?

Well, Solle said to take a break from the paperwork, and to help out with the investigations.

The investigations...?

Yeah, you're investigating the water sources around here, right? The original reason I was dispatched here was to help out with that.

Wait... That means!

Yup, from now on, I'll be able to go with you on your investigations. Give me a call anytime.

Wow... I'd feel really reassured if you're with us, Escha.

...Is this really reassuring?

There's so many people helping me... I have to do my best for everyone.

Now that the Sand Dragon's gone, I can travel further out to sea... I can finally search for the ghost ship.

(The ghost ship... I remember her mentioning that before...)

I'll definitely find it...!

(She seems really happy...)

Wait, ghost ship?

Yes, Jurie says she's been reading a lot of reports of mysterious ships in the Dusk Sea, including what she thinks is a ghost ship.

Well, I read a lot of things, and the topic of a large ghost ship somewhere in the Dusk Sea keeps coming up.

Ghost ship means...treasure, right?!

Well, I haven't heard of any treasure, but it's very possible. The one I've been reading about right now... There's just one passage that's bothering me... "Those who do not possess the light of truth shall wander for eternity"... Happen to know anything about it?

No, not at all...

Light... Could that mean a lamp!? No, I doubt it...

I'm sure it's describing some sort of trap in the ship... Well, if I find any more information, I'll be sure to let you two know.

That's right! I've travelled between many settlements, big and small, so I'm quite confident with my selection.

Travelling, huh... I'm sure it's difficult since it's for work, but I kind of like the idea.

Is there any reason why you don't stay in one place?

Of course that's to trick... I mean develop new markets... No, wait. It's to deliver items to fulfill the hopes and dreams of everyone everywhere! I've come to Stellard to break up the monotony of every day life with a breath of fresh air. Katla's shop is fun to browse, fun to buy from, and fun to use these products! Please, buy whatever you like!

These are some valuable items...

Oh man! I forgot! I forgot to tell my mom I was back! Sorry Shallie, I'll be right back.

Wha-?

Music: Mother's Wish

Oh, Shallie...

What's wrong, mom?

I bought something nice, but I don't have enough money...

What exactly did you buy...!?

(What...is this? ...That looks useless, no matter how I try to spin it.)

Don't worry mom, I'll give you 500 Cole to pay for it. Hahh... My money... And I'd finally saved up a decent amount...

Thank you so much! I'll be more careful next time... I'm sorry.

(Well, at least she looks happy. I can make this up with more work. I won't let something like this get me down!) Wait... Oh yeah! Mom, did you hear about the Sand Dragon?

Oh... Oh that! I'm glad to see you're safe.

(Oh brother...)

I'm sure it was really scary, but you beat a Sand Dragon! Your father would be really impressed.

Heh...well, I didn't defeat the Sand Dragon by myself... Everyone was helping me, including the other Shallie.

She's a wonderful girl. You should be glad you have such a great friend.

Yeah... I know. ...Oh right. I should do the training Master Wilbell told me to do. I already finished the assignment, but it's important to continue practicing...

Hmm, so she's still at it...

Wah, Master! When did you get here!? You should've told me sooner! Just look at these brilliant swings! I might even be able to win the world swinging championship at this rate!

...What was your goal, again?

I'm just kidding! My goal is to become a great alchemist, that won't ever change.

...Well, I will say you're unmatched when it comes to persistence.

Yes! So please, I'll putup with any training, no matter how harsh!

Huh?

Just talking to myself. More importantly...

Huh? Wha? W-what's this!?

It's a monster I created. It won't attack on its own, so it should be good practice for a fledgling alchemist.

Then does that mean...!

But you can't beat this thing if you half-rear end it. Just think of it as a test of your strength, and don't hold back.

Okay! I'll definitely win!

It's going to be hanging out near Shallistera's ship. Make sure to bring her and her friends along if you hope to beat this thing.

Wait, won't that be cheating?

This time...nah. I'll even help you if you want.

And you're sure it won't attack?

Yep. It's a creation of magic, so I can basically make anything I wanted!

Wow... Even a dragon?

Uh...yeah, definitely!

Oh, Ms. Shallistera. There was actually something I wanted to ask you.

What is it...?

I'd like you to tailor some clothing.

Clothing...?

Yes, the chairman is in need of new clothes.

This suit may be a little worn, but it's still perfectly wearable...

The sleeves are beginning to fray. I believe it would be best if you replaced it.

Hmm... I suppose if you say so, I'll indulge in a new one.

Very well then. I've written the details here for you.

I understand, I'll do my best.

Music: News

I know nothing of alchemy, so I'm not sure how she's going to make this, Ms. Linca.

Not to worry, sir, I've already talked with some alchemists here in Stellard and they've come up with a recipe to make a new suit for you.

Really? Hm... Can you make this, young lady?

Yes, everything looks good. I'll be sure to have a new suit for you soon, Mr. Perriend.

Well, both of us have a lot of work to do! Let's get going!

Excuse me. I have to put away some of the stuff we got from the Sand Dragon's nesst...

Music: The Warrior's Holiday

No idea. I don't remember saying anything strange, but I did feel out of place when I came back to the village.

...Out of place? Now that you mention it, you always had this frown on your face during festivals...

I don't think things like the Water Festival should be held when there's a water shortage.

But the Water Festival is important to show gratitude to the god of water...

Yeah, I know. That's what everyone believes. But I can't just ignore reality... Please don't tell dad.

You must be having a hard time.

The job is just too much for you.

Shallie, it's fine to look for a way to save the village. But you need to find your own happiness, too.

...Kortes.

Do you think you can find happiness here in Stellard?

I'm not sure yet. The only reason I'm here is to save the village, but I'm not sure what I'll do after that. I told Shallie what I thought of doing in the future, but to be honest, I'm just not sure what I should do. I love Stellard and Lugion, but right now, I don't think I could choose between them.

I'm sure you'll find your answer before this journey is over. It's not a decision you have to make now. Anyway, don't tell anyone about this. It'll just cause trouble again.

I understand. I have to start doing some alchemy now, so...

Shallie, is it okay if you stay here to do alchemy instead of going back home?

I'm here because I want to! I'm not very good at alchemy, so watching someone better would really help.

Oh, I see. But, I've still got a lot to learn. I hope I can be a great alchemist like Escha while I'm living in Stellard.

Besides, I...want to learn with you, Shallie!

Really...? Thank you so much!

Shallie, you here?

Oh, hello Jurie.

I've got some exciting news for the two of you. Come on down to the Hunter's Hangout when you're both ready.

Wow... Maybe she found some treasure?!

Wow...you two sure came down here fast. Do you have a minute to talk?

Yes, what do you need? (Hmm, Jurie seems a little different from usual.)

...Do you remember when we talked about the ghost ship?

Of course. The one packed with treasure, right?

Yeah. I didn't know where it was before... But I've heard a hunter saw something resembling it. It's in the sea south of the Eastern Sea of Smoke. Nobody's actually gone inside it yet... So... We might find, not just treasure, but also relics from the past era.

Isn't this a huge chance?

Yeah, that's why I want your help. Can you go with me?

(There could be something useful for alchemy... Even something that could save the village. And above all, I'd be helping Jurie.) Okay! Please, I'd love to accompany you.

That's the spirit. Can you take out your map? It's right...

Here.

Just south of the Sand Dragon's nest?

Yeah. The hunter that saw it was on one of the Corporation's ships. It'll be a long journey, but it shouldn't take too long if we take your ship, Shallistera.

Of course!

It's hard to explain... I suppose you just need to build trust, though it might take a while...

That'll take too long!! I want to pet and hug him RIGHT NOW!!

Don't understand. But doubt. I like. Petting. Or hugging.

Was there anything special that helped you two become friends?

I don't think so...

Trying. Solle's shiny. Changed. My life!

I do remember you being quite touched when I first offered you some sweets.

Yes. That time. Very shocked. Never forget. Also. Solle's kindness!

...It sounds like it was really cute. I wish I'd seen it...

I said. Don't make fun. Of me. Expert treasure hunter!

Fun fact about the Sand Dragon: if you waste too much time in fighting it, it'll do a move where it grabs the ship in its jaws and throws it up in the air. It doing so ends the fight, and there's a short scene where everyone gets a little rattled and decides to go back at it. So, the fight is effectively on a timer. On a total New Game, you'd at most get a couple Burst Modes before it will do this. Ice Bombs are considerably useful, since the dragon is weak to Water, and at this point, you have no moves or other bombs you can make that inflict Water damage.

Also, Wilbell's creature does not attack at all, like she says, but the catch with that fight? It has 150,000 HP on Hardcore, which is the difficulty I'm playing Stera's side on (Despair and NO HOPE are the two higher difficulties, but are basically impossible on a New Game). I am playing Lotte's side on Despair mostly, with occasional branching into NO HOPE.

Fun fact: my second playthrough of the game, I was playing Lotte on Despair the entire game. When I started up Stera's story for this LP, I forgot what the difficulty was and ended up getting a game over on the first battle. More than a little embarrassing I think.

That was a pretty cool first boss. Are they all equally cinematic or is this Gust trying to make the early game impressive before going into :effort: zone?

Yeah I was about to ask about the difficulty and his "dragon attacks the ship!" moves.

There's only three bosses you have to fight to finish the game, and all of them are pretty cool if you ask me.

HOO'S HEAD GOES ALL THE WAY AROUND?
I have a question about Wilbell. At first it seemed like Lotte thought she was an alchemist, but now in your characterisations and in the ingame text, it seems like she knows Wilbell is a witch? Did I miss where this was explained, or does the game just gloss over it?

Lotte doesn't know the difference between the two. She's under the impression Wilbell is an alchemist who can do magic.

Part XII: The Efficient Side of the Job Taking

Heeey, Shallies!

Hello, Escha.

I've finally opened my shop!

Oh!! Really?? Congratulations!

Yeah, thanks to your help, I was able to open it on time. Thank you!

Excuse me, I'd like this and this and that... And one of those, too!

Oh, welcome! Um, this, and this, and that... Um...

Oh, thanks.

Also, I'd like 3 of these and 5 of those...

Three of these and five of... Waaah!

...A-are you okay!?

Yeah, I'm fine. Thank y-...

Shallies... Could you help me with the shop for a little while...?

We'll help! Cheer up!

The customers won't attack you, please calm down!

Uh... Thank you both...

(I guess Escha panics like that too. I'm starting to feel like we've got something in common...)

Shallies, when we serve all the customers, feel free to come by my shop any time!

Wow, these recipes are really advanced...

Yes, I used many of these items when I was working as an alchemist. I don't do as much these days, so I hope you'll take me on a lot of expeditions so I can keep practicing...

Of course! You're always welcome whenever we go out of town.

Yes, I've learned a lot.

Oh, I remembered a tool passed down in our village, used to find lost items... Do you want to try making it?

Yes. If you use it, you might be able to find rare ingredients or relics.

A dowsing rod... Thanks Teo. I'll give it a try.

Oh! Finding lost items! Excuse me, I'll be right back!

Yes?

Well... I was just wondering if we had any of dad's old digging equipment in the house. I thought I saw something that might be good yesterday, but...

Mining tools? ...Wait here a minute.

Here.

It belonged to your father... He mined all kinds of things.

Huh... That's pretty cool! Yah! Haiya! ...Like this?

Sniff... You remind me of your father.

I'm happy, but that also makes me kind of sad...

The container is getting pretty full... I do feel pretty accomplished. It's hard to gather this stuff, but after seeing this, I feel like working hard again. Oh I know! I might as well fill up the container completely while I'm at it. Then I'd be prepared for anything... And I'm sure I'd feel really great!

Hm, I wonder if Shallie is going to be back soon. Where did she go?

Here's your weapon, Shallie...

Thank you, Miruca. It looks very nice!

...I thought it would match you.

Hehe, that makes me happy.

But it's also powerful, since it's for combat. So that means it might be a little heavy...

It's heavy? I wonder if I can use it properly...

You'll be fine. Good luck! By the way, Shallie, how is Shal? I hope she isn't bothering you too much.

Oh no, not at all! She's very nice to be around. She's so energetic, and so friendly... Have you been friends with Shallie for a long time?

...Yes. I met her before I moved to Central for school. I'm surprised she remembered me after I came back, but...

Oh, Shallie!

Hello! You know how you were digging in artifacts at the Sand Dragon's nest? Well, now I can help you. My father had some digging tools in the house, and now I can help you!

Really? That's great... Thank you so much.

What is it?

I usually sell rare items, but their rarity comes from not being seen often or being unknown.

Sure, that sounds about right.

That's why they need an explanation. I had an idea for notes, to make things easier to understand at a glance.

Oh, that sounds like a good idea.

But I just have no idea how to write a good sales explanation. I'd think you two would know a lot about strange items from experience, as alchemists...

Not at all!

We make a lot of things, but they aren't really for selling...

Hmm, yeah, that's true. That's a problem...

Oh, I know! Jurie might be able to help... Her writing is pretty interesting.

Yes, we should ask her.

If you're writing a description for something, what things do you need to look out for?

You need to make it truthful, and easy to understand... That's all, really. Why?

Well...

It's this clock. Apparently it was found on a shipwreck in the Dusk Sea.

Oh, this. I didn't think I'd see it again. In that case... This should do the trick.

Wow, this is really easy to understand!

I just happened to be there when this clock was excavated. You could use that, if you like it.

Thank you very much! I'm sure I"ll be able to sell it in no time.

Oh, also, I know I didn't mention this sooner, but there're some other things I want written. Maybe 20... No, 30 things.

Jurie, you help with excavations in the Dusk Sea?

Sometimes. It's not often it's safe enough to excavate some of the ship ruins, especially since the Sand Dragon became active, but now, I could be called out any time.

Wow Jurie, you do so many tasks for the Union. I can only hunt monsters and do alchemy...

It's not that special. I'm one of the senior members of the Union, so it's only natural that I take on a lot of different jobs. It gets a little boring sometimes, but I don't mind it usually.

Do you have any jobs now?

Well, since I came back from the hunt with you two, I've had a few jobs. Not much out of the ordinary.

Uh, we should probably get back now...

I think it's a lot to ask for that much...

Why don't you use Jurie's example for your other products?

I don't know if I'm a good enough writer for that. I only can sell and gather items. Can either of you help me?

Um...

I don't know if we have time for that, but if you need help, you can always ask us if you need some help, okay?

Okay, sure...

...Seriously though, you're doing pretty well now.

Really? I thought I had become a little better, too.

...You're supposed to be a little humble about it! Well, I guess it IS something you'd say.

Hello Escha, Wilbell! What were you two talking about?

Well you see, back in Colseit, Escha...

Wah! Let's not talk about that, shall we??

So you were in the city where Escha's from?

Yeah, I was just surprised how helpless little Escha from back then turned into a fairly skilled alchemist.

Uu, she's still saying it... I worked really hard, you know.

Though I guess it's true if you compare her to other alchemists, she still has a long way to go.

Hey Master, why were you in Colseit? Is that where your family's from?

My family? No. I travel around the world searching for powerful magic and fighting powerful monsters to test my power. That's why I'm here in Stellard.

Oh wow!

Wilbell, do you know other alchemists?

Yup, when you're as great as I am, you get to know lots of alchemists. You kinda start to lose count.

You say that, but you only know a few including me, right?

That's plenty!

So what are the other alchemists like? I only really know about alchemy from my homeland...

Hm, I guess... They're all really similar. Including Escha.

What? Who are you saying is similar to me?

Partner... Wait, we aren't alike at all!

Oh? You're both really helpful, and you don't give up that easily. Don't you think that's similar enough?

You know more alchemists than Escha? I kind of want to meet them...

I don't really mind, but... He doesn't joke around much. I don't think you'd have much fun talking.

Huh? I just wanted to talk about alchemy...

Oh, I see. Of course... I wonder why I got so worked up...

Hey Master, who's your friend you were talking about?

Oh, her... Well, I met her before I met Escha and her partner. She helped me when I was just starting as a magician, but she left suddenly one day and I haven't seen her since. Knowing her, she's probably still traveling around with her Nio, her sister.

Nio...she left Colseit so suddenly before Logy went back to Central.

Yeah, I remember... I have no idea where she is now.

Wow, Master has so many great experiences.

Oh, don't worry. You're still young, I'm sure you'll have plenty of stories like mine.

Are you saying you're old?

Ahaha. Anyway, leaving the 'being similar' alone, wasn't your partner called back to Central?

Oh, yes. But he came back right away, and started developing a new airship with Awin!

Alchemists really do all kinds of things, don't they?

(It sounds really fun. There's so much I still don't know about alchemy.)

Hello, Homura!

Today. Very bored.

Huh, why?

Too peaceful. Boring. Good time. For new adventure.

You're always in so much danger, Homura.

Solle. Worry too much.

Just to make this clear, I don't want to attend your funerals anymore, on top of regular rituals!

I don't. Make blunders. That often.

Um... Funerals? Anymore?

Oh, never mind that.

Anyway. Solle. Not big deal. Today. Bored. I talk. About adventures.

Huh, really!?

I wonder what happened...

...There. Fought Breaker. Defeated. With sharp blow...

Okay! Then what?

...There. Found valuable. Power source. From past era...

Solle. Reward. Not enough...

Huh, so Solle's surprisingly tight with cash...

My funds were pretty low back then...

But it's fine as long as you're paid, right?

No. Unacceptable. Low payment! Pressed Solle. Gave more... Said. To buy weapon.

Whaat!? But Solle gave you that out of consideration...

Ahahahaha! Sounds just like you, Homhom!

Not. Laughing matter! No rest. Next adventure...

Yeah?

...Defeated. Giant wolf. There. Found valuable material...

Yes, that was very helpful. I paid you market price for that one.

But... Solle. Said buy armor...

That's very important for not getting hurt...

Whaaaat!?

...Then ate. Much dessert.

...This is sounding more like Homhom's purchase record for sweets, isn't it?

Yeah... I thought so too...

How rude! Sweets. Greater than. Any treasure. Mother. Of all creation!!

And this is why I started paying Homura in both money and sweets.

Solle. Overprotective. Hunters strong.

But you've been able to purchase some proper equipment, and you're injured far less now because of it.

Well. That might. Be true.

I'm starting to get jealous! Oh, that looks really good! Hey, where did you get that?

This? I didn't get it anywhere, I made it myself.

You made that!? Awesome! I didn't know you could make something like this...

So stingy! I am pretty impressed, though, that stuff isn't easy to do.

You always seem so busy with work, I'm surprised you have time to do something like this...

Well, it's also a form of stress relief for me. Measuring the exact amount of ingredients, mixing them in order... Watching them slowly bake... That's when I'm most relaxed.

That sounds like a lot of work...

Well, everyone has their own tastes. I'm not trying to persuade you to cook or anything, don't worry.

It looks so perfect... You must've had a lot of pent up stress...

Work is always a battle against stress.

Hmm... I don't think I've ever felt stressed, honestly.

That's because you don't have much responsibility yet.

Well now THAT makes me stressed out...!

Then we have something in common, since I had planned on eating these sweets in peace.

Oh. Sorry for bothering you...!

(Or maybe Solle is just an exception.)

That's not an issue. Now then, shouldn't you two be getting back to work? I believe Raoul had some work for you.

Oh, hey. How's your work going? I'm counting on you guys to become top contributors.

Just leave it to us! We'll be up there in no time. Like, on the level of Jurie.

Jurie... She's such an adult, and so wonderful... I really do want to be like her.

A wonderful adult...? Well, you aren't wrong... But there're some surprisingly interesting things about her too.

Interesting...?

I can't really tell you myself. If you're interested, you should ask her directly.

I wonder what it is... I'm curious.

Then let's go and ask her!

Shallies. When. Next adventure?

Hm, it has been a little while...

Yeah. We should probably do some investigations. Sorry Homhom, we have to talk to Jurie. We'll get ready for an adventure right after that, okay?

I wait. Now. Go.

Are you doing anything interesting, Jurie!?

...Why that little... I should shut him up...

...Jurie?

Oh, right... The other day, he saw what I wrote in my notebook... That's probably what he was talking about...

Notebook?

It's work related. It's about where I go and what I do... But he was really interested for some reason.

I don't mind... But it really is just my boring work transcripts. I did include a few choice opinions too, though.

Hm, let's see...

I wonder what Jurie writes about...

See, it's nothing.

...I felt like I'd actually traveled to the places you did.

I usually get sleepy when I read, but I just couldn't stop... You have real writing talent, Jurie!

Thanks. I've never show this to anyone else before, but... If you really think so... Maybe I'll try writing something else... If you don't mind me asking, what did you like about the writing?

Hm... The writing was so real. The way you describe creatures, and the land itself is really memorable. Even the way you describe what creatures eat, and the kind of places they live really makes you feel like you're in that place when you read.

Yeah! And the way you talk about what someone who was there might be feeling is really amazing!

You two like it that much...? I'll keep that in mind.

Oh, we were planning on going on an adventure soon. Can you be ready soon?

Oh, sure. I'll just be waiting at the harbor. See you.

Hey Shallie, I have to go home to get some stuff. Can we meet up at the harbor?

Okay! See you soon.

What is it, mom? You seem really happy.

Ufufu... Tadah! Snacks for you.

I'm just happy that you're happy!

But seriously, where'd this all come from? There's so much...

You've been working really hard lately, so I used my savings to give you a big surprise...

...What?

There's no point holding onto all that money. You need to use it for things like this!

...Sure, but what happens if we run into hard times later on? And you're always going on about how we have no money!

We're fine! There won't be a problem if you keep up the work at this rate. Don't worry!

...Ah jeez...

Did you need something, dear?

Oh, yeah, I need to pick up the digging tool dad left. Ah! Here we go. See ya later mom!

Take care. Be back for dinner!

We've gotten some reports of powerful slags in the ruins to the north. Might be worth it to take those out.

Alright, let's set a course.

Is that one of the powerful slags?

I believe so. It certainly looks different from the others.

Let's be careful, everyone!

Slag king

Music: Scorpio

Well, that certainly wasn't difficult as I thought it would be.

Wow, Mr. Solle, you were amazing!

I've been studying how to fight for a long time, but it is an interesting experience to actually do it.

(But you didn't do much fighting...)

I'm just glad I was able to help. I've faced some powerful slags before, but you can never be too careful.

Do you two know of the abandoned factory to the north?

Yeah, I've been there before. It has some nice industrial ingredients.

That's good. I've heard reports the next mysterious slag is up there. Let's get going.

Here, everyone! Let me show you what I can do!

That was...harder than I thought. But look!

Just a stone?

Jeez! It's way more valuable than a stone!

Let's focus, everyone. The slag is around here.

Here. It comes!

These slags aren't as strong as I thought they would be...

The slag population of this area has grown out of control recently, so coming here was a good idea. At least we can leave it to the regular hunting teams to take care of excessive slag populations.

Since our job here is done, why not head to the Eastern Sea of Smoke? We can start work on making a path to the ghost ship.

I see, so this is the kind of place a Sand Dragon lives in.

If we're lucky, we could find some dragon parts. Those kinds of materials are rare, so let's keep our eyes open.

The horde

Great battle. This.

Whew, that was exhausting!

These are...dragon scales?

Wow...these would make incredible ingredients!

Uh, hey guys, the Basket is getting a little heavy, and we need some supplies. Maybe we should go back to Stellard?

Oh, no... I'm just happy to help. But what were those used for? I could tell they held a lot of power...

Curious, are we? Very well, leave it to Wilbell to teach you. They're catalysts for drawing out power. You use stuff like that during synthesis too, right? Catalysts that contain a lot of natural power like those allow you to gain even greater power.

Just what I would expect from Master Wilbell!

This will be useful for synthesis, too!

Hey Shallie, I'm going to go back to my house. My mom has been buying a lot of stuff lately, and I just wanted to check on her, so...

Oh, of course! I'll probably go to Miruca's workshop.

Okay, see you later!

(I can hear something, but... What's this...?)

All you do is work, every day... You should do the things you to more...

There's not really anything I want to do...

I'll earn the money. You should do things you enjoy...

...I don't want your money. Sorry, but I can't concentrate... Do you mind leaving?

(...I should probably go, too...)

Jurie...! I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to listen in or anything...!

...Don't worry about it. Hmm, that must have seemed strange to you.

Um, I'm sorry if this is rude, but is there a problem between you and Miruca...?

There's no specific reason why... She's just been like this ever since she came back from Central... For some reason she's distancing herself... I don't think we could even have an argument in this headspace...

Has it always been like this?

Hm... Well, ever since she back from Central. Compared to Central, Stellard is a poor town. I think Miruca was looked down on in Central because of where she came from. It's also true Miruca has never been the most social girl, but it was nothing like this before her trip.

When you mentioned earning money, does that mean...

I want to let her go study in Central again... But she seems to think I'm just bothering her... ..Don't mention this to Miruca.

Okay... (But is this really okay...?)

Don't look so troubled by it, Shallistera. This is something me and her have to work together.

...

...Welcome home, Shallie.

What's wrong, mom? You seem kind of down...

I foudn something wonderful and bought it, but...

W-what did you buy this time...!?

(...Oh no, mom is definitely getting scammed by someone!)

I really wanted it... I'm sorry, Shallie...

You know we don't have much money, right?

But it was so wonderful...

Ugh, I guess I can't help it... This is the last time!

Thank you! I won't do it again... I'm sorry.

(Uu... I worked so hard to save that money... I guess I should just write it off as a mom tax or something...)

Thank you again Shallie... I'm so glad I have such a wonderful daughter... Shallie, can you go visit Miruca? It seems like it's been such a long time since you talked with her by yourself...

Oh, yeah... I should see her soon...

Whoa! You made it!

Were you doubting me?

No, I was just surprised seeing it in person... You really are amazing, Miruca.

Not really.

Yes really. I'm sure your friends back in Central thought the same thing!

...There aren't very many people in the capital who give sincere compliments.

Huh? What does that mean?

Pretty much everyone over there was like that.

Oh... I'm sorry I mentioned it...

It's not your fault, you don't need to apologize.

Hey, Miruca! Could you teach me how to Imbue too?

Huh...?

Then we could create something awesome. Together!

...You won't complain half way into it?

No way! Let's work together!

I guess it's pretty good work for your first time, but...

*pant* *pant* *pant*

You don't really have the stamina for this... Is it really that exhausting to you, Shal?

I don't know how YOU do it, Miruca...! You don't like to be outside of town much, but you can do this work so easily.

I guess it's something you just learn. Anyway, I'm going to close the shop for today.

Oh! See you tomorrow then! (I should get back and check if mom has bought anything new... I hope not.)

Shallie, um...

...Did you buy something again?

Uu... You're pretty sharp!...

So what is it this time...

WHAAAAT!? What's with this price!? What on earth did you buy!?

Mom, why would you buy something like this!?

It just looked like something interesting, but... I guess it was too expensive... I just got carried away...

...Hey mom, who sold you this thing?

Um, it was a travelling merchant girl with a shop on the street...

(I knew it was her!) ...Did you buy everything up until now from her!?

Shallie, I'm so, so sorry!

...I'm going to go have a word with her!

Huh? W-what is it? Your beauty if wasted with such a scary look on your face.

Stop tricking my mom into buying your junk!

What? I don't have a single piece of "junk" here! Are you mistaking me for someone else?

This, and that, and that. Every single thing here isn't decent quality in the least!!

But my customers seem happy... That's because they decided they're worthwhile items.

You're the one who tricked them into believing that!

M-my shop is perfectly legitimiate!

Oh really? If you're so legitimate, then why don't you show some good faith?

Huh? Good faith... What do you mean...?

Wh-what are you doing...!?

Just helping myself to some of your money so I can trust you as an honest merchant!

P-please, give me a break! I'd go out of business!!

If you're a legitimate business, losing the trust of your customers is worse. Or are you saying I'm wrong?

Uu... I got it, I got it already! I don't want to accept this, but I'll make an exception just for you, Shallie!

(Oh brother... Well, at least Katla knows not to rip-off my mom anymore. Wait...where's Shallie?)

We've also received reports there're unusually large numbers of monsters here in the forests. We would be doing a favor to everyone in Stellard is we reduced their numbers a bit.

Is there any reason why the growth of monsters has been so large lately?

Nothing we can determine, but there're still a lot of investigations to cover in the Stellard area. There's no telling how many more things we have yet to discover.

I can't see any more monsters around here.

Indeed. It certainly seems we've solved the population crisis around here.

Woah! I never noticed there were fish here before. (Hm? Uhhhh...? Maybe I could catch some and make a bit of money...? Though I don't think I can just jump in the water...)

Absolutely not.

Hahahaaa... I kind of expected it...

As you should! Fish are valuable, and catching them is out of the question.

I thought so. I got it.

But, only in the water here.

...Huh? What do you mean?

Well, it wouldn't be a problem if you did it outside of town.

Why didn't you say that sooner?! Alright, thank you!

What would you even use fish for? Aside from eating, that is.

Alchemy, of course! Who knows what kind of valuable materials fish can have in their bellies? And maybe... I could use the fish, too!

(He was better off not asking...)

Oh, Shallie, are you looking for something?

Mom, do we have a fishing pole?

Oh, we do. Your father had one... Wait just a minute.

Here you go.

Hehe! Now you can fish without having to buy bait!

Oh, nice! You really get it, mom.

Oh, Shallie! We missed you.

Yeah, I needed to help my mom with some things. It's kinda embarrassing, but...

Oh, that's fine. What are you making?

Bait!

Yay! Done with the bait. I hope it's good enough to catch something!

That was low of you, Katla :(

Man the different Variable Strikes are so cool. In Mana Khemia you only had one, since only the main character could do them. Being able to do them with any character combo is hella sweet.

Oh yeah, and the big pink slag? I forgot I had the difficult set on Despair (yes, again), but I still managed to win. Hell yeah.

I had to re-record that fight because of some pretty severe audio de-sync (as well as the big horde fight), and after the fight I was wondering why it was much harder on the re-record than it was on the first attempt.

So, because I got my first Ultimate Attack off-camera and a new Burst Mode mechanic is going to pop up in this next update, in this attempt to keep this moribund thread at least clinging to the respirator post, I shall talk about Burst Mode a bit. Three important things.

1. If you watched either battle video from the last update, at the start of the match you'll have, in encounters like that, an unavoidable debuff to your guys or a buff to the enemy (permanent poison, or blindness, or a boost to the enemy's strength / defense, or, worst of all, inability to recover HP or revive from KO). The only way to cancel this out is by activating Burst Mode, where those effects are nullified as long as Burst is going. This is very important for difficult matches and something you should always keep in mind, especially for difficult encounters.

2. Ultimate attacks work quite a bit differently than in Escha. In Escha, each character once they passed the level 30 threshold had their own super meter and it went up based on any action taken in the battle. Once the fight ended, all of these meters were reset in the interest of balance. Shallie, however, each character shares the ultimate gauge once a single one of your characters gets over the level 30 line (everyone should be getting theirs at more or less the same time). Only support actions taken in Burst Mode will increase the ultimate gauge, and anyone can use their Ultimate Attack once it gets to 100%. Another difference is the Ultimate Gauge carries over in-between battles. Unfortunately, you can't do anything awesome like chaining Ultimate Attacks in this game.

3. Field Bursts, to be gained after an event in this coming update. What are these? Well, you may have noticed in a few battle videos where the attack percentage would put me into Burst Mode, but I order a support attack anyway. This is because even after you cross 100%, you can add to that number during a support attack. Bigger number (maximum is 150%) means longer Burst Mode. Once you get Field Bursts, every 10% you get above 100% (excepting 140% and 150%, which just means longer Burst Modes), means you get to activate a new Field Burst. Field Bursts are basically incredibly helpful buffs to your team during Burst Mode. Only characters in your back row get to activate their Field Burst, which is something important to keep in mind when you're going into Burst Mode. For our cast...

Stera - 15% buff to offense and defense. Very helpful.

Kortes - Burst Mode time is 25% longer. Because your Burst Gauge only goes down in Burst Mode (basically any action taken, other than getting attacked or swapping characters out, decreases it). Incredibly helpful, especially when combined with...

Jurie - enemies take 25% more damage, and they slowly lose health each turn. Always helps, especially when you combine it with a long combo and you just keep increasing damage with a longer Burst Mode.

Lotte - 33% of maximum MP becomes automatic healing, and increases maximum HP. Purely defensive, but not a bad one at all, at least in the mid-game (Chapter 5-8). Healing items need to be powerful to fight powerful bosses, so that automatic healing is negligible.

Miruca - game says "Increases stats proportional the number of time cards for faster movement". The "faster movement" bit is what confuses me, since it doesn't seem to increase speed at all. In any case, even though Miruca's whole gimmick is activating a whole lot of time cards from shooting things into air and having them crash back down, this one isn't too useful from my experience. I don't know if item time cards count for this, though.

Wilbell - another defensive one. Increases HP / MP recovery for characters on the bench, and automatic recovery from KO. You may have noticed it a few times, but when a character is KO'd their turn is not automatically skipped. You have a choice to skip their turn, or swap them out for another character, who can either be downed or not. With automatic KO recovery, when a character's turn comes up, they automatically get revived. Note: this does NOT apply to KO'd characters you swap in. Not an overly useful one.

Homura - chance for another turn even after moving, like our friend Gio from threads past. Not as broken as Gio's move (Homura even had a move called Chaos Blade that acts similarly to Gio's move, with a much lower chance of success. Wasn't Gio a total badass in Meruru? He was a monster), but it's the same idea. Not very useful, since the chance seems pretty low, and I hate leaving tough battles up to chance, which is where this buff would really shine in a tough, close battle.

Keithgriff. I mean, honestly, he was in the OP along with all the other playable characters, so it's not a huge spoiler - significantly increases defense. This is HUGE increase to defense, and, it's been a while, but it either nullifies or significantly reduces the effect of negative status effects altogether. Unspeakably useful. If you got a 150% Burst Mode with Kortes, Jurie, and this party member, you have a huge chance to do a ton of damage, and reduce incoming damage, even from very high-level enemies. This Field Burst, along with this party member's other considerable advantages, make this party member second only to Stera and Lotte in usefulness (the alchemists, as always, have first priority because of items).

Escha - considerably increases the power of all items, offensive and defensive. Maybe not as useful if you don't have a lot of powerful items, but once you start developing superweapons in Chapter 10, you can double the power of an already enormously powerful item.

Solle - provides a significant chance to survive a mortal blow (this applies to all party members), as well as providing a buff to critical hits. Kind of a weird double play, one offensive and one defensive buff, but it's not too shabby.

Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum sonatur.
With the tweaks that they made to the combat, do you think it flows better? I dont have a PS3 so I've never been able to play them, just follow along.
And the spoiled character is actually a surprise to me, (and no I have no idea how I missed it) I just hope they are as powerful they always are in "plot scene" mode!

That's actually an interesting twist. Mana Khemia honestly didn't do much with its Burst mechanics, other than give you a higher chance to get crits and do more damage with attacks. You mostly did it as a self-imposed challenge to see how long you can stay in Burst, since the game keeps track of that. Higher combo numbers in burst would result in better SP rewards at the end of battles (they're sorta like CP from FFXIII).

What? It seemed like
a good idea at the time.

Atelier Iris 3 had some major mechanical advantages to being in Burst, but nothing like this. (That's partly due to AI3 having a set party of three members, where 2 of them could change classes and the other one was completely static.)

Also, Mana Khemia's Roxis had some of my favorite timecard fuckery / meta-mechanical skills I've seen in any game. How does Miruca stack up?

The most time card fuckery Miruca can do is one of her moves has a pretty good chance of at least somewhat delaying the enemy's turn. Messing around with turn orders seems to be more Escha's thing, and for her, only with support attacks.

I actually didn't know what determined the number of field bursts you get when you enter Burst mode, so thanks for that write up.

Job offer

Huh?

Shallie!

Shallie!

G'morning. Do you need Perriend for anything?

Yes, actually... Linca called for me earlier...

She did?

It sounded like they had something to ask me...

Hmm.

Why are you here?

Well, we did beat the Sand Dragon, so I thought Perriend might have a bigger job for me.

I'm sure Linca will be able to find something for you.

I hope so... Anyway, let's go see.

Good morning... I see Shallotte is here as well. I heard about your participation in the battle with the Sand Dragon the other day.

Oh jeez, that's embarrassing...

The chairman is grateful that you helped us defend the city.

Well thank you, too! What was it you wanted to ask me?

The chairman wants to speak with you directly about that... He'll be back shortly. Do you mind waiting?

Not at all.

Er, Linca? Do you have any bigger jobs I could do?

Bigger job? How does hauling industrial refuse sound to you? There're some pretty big things to move.

Uhhmm, that's not quite what I meant by "big"...

I see...

Oh, I'm sorry for making you wait. Apologies.

Uhm? Oh, uh, that's okay...

There's something I'd like to request of you... Or rather, your ship.

And what would that be?

Do you know of the continent to the east?

Yes, but, that's about it... I don't know anything ABOUT it.

That's not too surprising. It's been a few decades since the travel routes there stopped. However, since you dispatched the Sand Dragon, we may be able to open trade routes again. It's still rough around the edges, and probably dangerous, but someone with your skill might learn something.

Whoa! Exploring unknown lands is a HUGE job!

Um, thank you for the offer, Perriend, but I still have to save my village...

Yes, I know. Linca.

The continent to the east is told to be less affected by the Dusk than Stellard.

If the Dusk isn't influencing that area, there could be a solution to our drought problem there.

Really?!

The documents are very old, so we can't be positive, but if there's a chance...? It may be worth looking into.

I'll do it! I'll go! I'll travel to the eastern continent.

Ah. I'm most grateful. I've let the Union know as well. Ask Raoul if you want details.

Okay!

Uhhmm, is it okay if I go with you to Raoul's place?

Yes, of course.

Nice! Let's get going!

To the eastern continent

Hey, Shallie and... Shallie.

Shallie and Shallie, hehe...

What? You've got the same name...

I don't really mind, but...

I'm back...!

Escha! Welcome.

Ohh, I'm so tired... Harry and Reyfer dragged me all over the place...

So those two came along, too...? I don't see them, though...

They didn't want to leave and said "We'll stay here!", so I left them.

Seriously?

I'd be more worried if it was just Harry, but I guess as long as Reyfer is with him, they'll be fine.

Uh, what are you talking about?

Oh! Hey, Shallies! I actually just came back from the eastern continent.

Really? The eastern continent...

It sounds like youc an go now that the dragon is gone. Did you look into it already?

You're pretty quick to pick up on these things...

Central knows the continent exists, but it's still a mostly unexplored land.

That's why I wanted to see what it was like over there.

So what did you see?

it's just like you said, there're much fewer signs of drought there. There were flowers everywhere...

Mmm... What else?

Well, I didn't really check if anything was edible, but a lot of stuff looked really tasty!

...That's good, thank you. Please get some rest, Escha.

Wait, what?

Ugh, in other words, we still hardly know anything.

Mmm...!

It's strange to hear you raise your voice like that... What's wrong?

I came because Perriend asked me to investigate the eastern continent.

The... Chairman...?

Yes! He said there could be a way to stop the droughts!

...drat old man.

Me too! I'll go with her!

Calm down, you two. I don't plan on sending anyone else over there for now.

Nooo... Really? Why?

The route is pretty long, and the entire thing is yet to be secured. We can't start the investigations without a supply route.

Could maybe I go first? My village is threatened by a drought!

No. It's too dangerous.

Escha went there on her own! We'll be fine! We beat a Sand Dragon!

Don't overestimate yourself. Do you think you can beat that thing alone? Especially you, Shallotte. You don't have people following you or a ship or the ability to take care of yourself. You need to have both feet on the ground before you start running.

...I...

...

...

Shallie...

I'll go.

Jurie...

I heard everything.

They were shouting pretty loudly.

You can't tell a treasure hunter not to explore.

I don't want to stop you... Unlike these two.

No, them too. If they need something and it's on the eastern continent, they need to go.

I'm not saying they can't go, they just need to wait. Everyone from the Union is still tired from fighting the dragon. They'll have their assignment once the route is secure. Just... Wait for now.

I'll go with them.

Please, Raoul. Kortes and Teo will be with us, too.

Really? That's still not enough...

Solle. Eastern continent. Go now, yes?

Yes, Homura, the route is open. Though it is dangerous.

Dangerous adventure. I welcome it. Hurry. Ready ship.

Still not enough?

Just do what you want.

Yay! Thank you, all!

Heh. Sounds fun.

Well then, here is your official mission. But, I cannot guarantee your safety, since the route isn't secured... Crossing beyond the Eastern Sea of Smoke, follow the wear of the land to a settlement called Faav Village.

Faav Village?

Yes. It's the only place on the eastern continent that we've had contact with. You can meet up with the people I know.

Okay!

Escha, Solle, what about you two?

Although I think my time would be better spent here, investigating the eastern continent sounds interesting. And for you, Raoul, I would be able to keep an eye on them.

I just back so... I guess I could help out a little in showing everyone around. I'm not sure how much I'd help, though...

Well... I guess it could turn out well, if everyone stays safe. Still, I know I've said it already, but don't push yourselves too hard... Or get hurt. Especially you, Shallie!

...

Sheesh...

That was a bit much...

She was getting carried away by the Sand Dragon incident. That's when you're in the most danger. There's no one around to tell her any different. If no one else will say it, I have to say it msyelf.

She'll be fine. Jurie and Homura will be with her.

Leave to me. Solle. But reward be. Lots of shiny.

Shallie... (I should speak with her before we leave...) Well, if there's nothing else...

We should get ready. I've just got a few things to get, Shallie, and I'll be headed to your ship.

Escha, Homura and I will get ready from here.

I am. Always. Ready!

This might be more dangerous than the Sand Dragon, Shallie. Don't ever get careless out there. We have no idea what to expect.

Truth

Oh, master...

Mm? Are you ok? You sound depressed...

Nah... So, why are you here?

I heard about the survey team heading east. Do you know anything about the route they're taking?

Oh, actually, yeah. Just a little. Are you interested in the eastern continent?

Yep.

What I remember is, after crossing the Eastern Sea of Smoke, you follow the terrain to a settlement...

Oh hmm, that sounds tough... Ugh, but I still need to go...

Are you looking for something? It seemed like that when we first met, too...

What's with that face?

Seriously?

Sorry I didn't tell you sooner... Though I have spent a lot of time with alchemists, so I know a good amount. That's why I can still teach you alchemy for a little while longer. I can help you out until you're ready to go off on your own.

You're still my master. That won't change!

Thanks... So, part of my training is forming contracts with spirits. I wanted to look for one in the east.

Oh, well... Do you want to go there together?

Huh?

I'm going there with Shallie and the others, so, you could come too... If you want...

What!! YOU were the survey team? You should've told me sooner!

Whaa?

Come on! We need to hurry!

The people

I'm the one who wants to go there.

Oh, you are?

There were a few people, including Solle, saying there could be a way to solve the drought over there.

They probably just said that to get you to work harder.

Wait a minute, I thought you looked up to Raoul, Kortes.

What? Really?

Back when he was a treasure hunter, at least. Now he's just a lousy politician, probably just as bad as Perriend.

It could be that Raoul wants to go to the eastern continent himself.

Mmm, I doubt it.

He might be young, but he's only acting as president of the Union out of necessity. Perriend is too busy dealing with the rich folk to deal with the poor. Raoul can't just ignore them...

You don't know anything about that city, dad. You can't just say things like that.

You're the one who doesn't understand, Kortes.

What?

I saw a ton of people pass by every day while I was repairing the ship.

Knowing your way around isn't the only thing you need to learn about a city.

Knowing the city, huh...

Teo, what kind of place is the eastern continent?

They used to have trade routes with Lugion Village and the surrounding settlements.

I didn't know that...

Oh yeah... That reminds me, I remember hearing about a legend earlier...

Really?

But, uh, I can't remember it at the moment...

You always forget the most important parts...

I'm sorry...

Al...?

I heard you're going to the eastern continent?

Well that was quick...

Well, you know, my father is pretty enthusiastic about studying the eastern continent... Though I can't go.

Being rich must be SO tough.

Wait. You two already know each other?

Not like I can help running into him at the Corporation. His requests can be a pain sometimes.

I always wondered what you felt...

Anyway, did you need something? We're getting ready to leave, so we have a lot to do!

Oh yeah! So, if you find any information about the automatons while you're there, let me know.

Automatons? Are you wasting more money?

...Is he always like this?

Yeah, pretty much.

So if you actually find one, bring it back!

...Let's go.

Yeah... So uh, you seemed a little down earlier. Are you okay?

Eh? Oh uh, yeah, actually, I feel better after talking.

Oh, that's good! Let's go!

Okay!

The horizon of dreams

Oh, Shallie...

Sorry for making you wait! Let's get going! To the east!

Ah, are you okay?

What? You mean what Raoul said? Eh, don't worry about it, I'm fine.

Oh, that's good.

What's more important is that we're heading east, which means we're going to have to cross the sea, right?

Yes, Kortes and Teo are getting things ready. Will Wilbell and Miruca be coming?

Heck yeah! Were...Solle and Escha coming?

Yes. Solle said he's probably going to be busy with work, and Escha is still tired from her last trip, but I'm sure they'll be well enough by the time we make it to Faav Village.

So everyone's coming... Alrighty! Let's find the cause of the drought!

Yeah!!

Music: Koinegaufune

We're setting off!

I can't believe how vast the Dusk Sea is... Every time I see it, it amazes me how it manages to go on and on.

I don't think anyone can even see all of the Dusk Sea. From Stellard you can get an amazing look at it, but it's only when you're on a ship like this can you really understand how big it. Even if I traveled for my entire life, I don't think I could see it all. Especially if it keeps growing.

But that's why we're here, right? To stop the spread.

Of course.

So you're a witch, right?

Well, yes, but I'm still kind of inexperienced...

With the kind of power you have, I'm not sure if I believe that. How do you become a witch? Do you have to practice for a long time?

Hm, well... Why are you so interested?

I had a little talk with Shallistera one day, and I was thinking I might write a book while traveling and working with the Union and Shallie. It's going to be a book about the different kinds of people I've met while traveling the Dusk Sea. A witch would make a great entry in the book, don't you think?

That does sound pretty interesting. Well, it all starts with...

Oh...are we still traveling?

We haven't reached the Sand Dragon's nest yet! It's going to be a while.

Ugh...why is the Dusk Sea so big? I want to go inside...

Aww! Still, isn't it nice just to look up in the sky and just see everything you can?

I guess... But I think I'd still rather be working in my atelier. I can see the sky from Stellard, you know.

It's not the same!

Shallie! What do you want to eat tonight?

Hm, well, meat, and fish, and a lot of sweets! Do you have those?

Yes, of course!

Hang on, I'll come down and see what we have!

Watch your step! Ah!

Ah...haha, I'm okay...

You really should be more careful Shallie.

I know... I'm sorry. Oh! Everyone, turn around!

The rainbow of light...

It's a sign of good fortune, Miss Shallistera.

Landfall

No. But continent. Very close.

You've been to the east before, Homhom?

No.

Then how do you know?

Just saw map. Earlier.

Oh, huh.

Hello.

Eh?

I didn't think we'd have visitors again... I guess the Sand Dragon really was defeated!

..."Again"?

This used to be a trade hub for Stellard. And recently, we've had a lot more people coming from the west... Is trade starting up again?

Ah, we only came here to investigate the eastern continent.

But if everything works out, you might be able to start trading again!

That's good news!

We're looking for a place called Faav Village. Is it close by?

Yes, just beyond the Crystal Valley, in fact. But you should know, there's dangerous animals and Slags living there.

Ugh...

Shallie. Okay... Leave it to me.

Oh, also, two people I didn't recognize took off for the Crystal Valley the other day. I wonder how they're doing.

Two people...?

This is just a small trading point, but you're welcome to what you can find.

There's definitely going to be some new materials, this far from Stellard. Let's look around a lot.

(Huh? I thought I saw a fish just now... It looked huge...)

Yeah, it's probably the head honch-fish of that pond.

...Honch-fish.

It's a huge and splended fish, so everyone tries to catch it... But nobody's ever succeeded.

So if someone managed to catch it, they'd be a hero?

Huh? Uh... I guess, kind of?

Well then, I can't just sit still...!

Shallie, catch up!

Ugh, crap! Sorry!

Rules of Nature

That monster up there could make things difficult if people are going to travel through here. Let's take care of it.

This monster is pretty strong against magical attacks...

We're going to need to be extra aggressive with this one. Looks like it's recovering its wounds.

Music: FJ: Initiategram

Whew... I didn't think I could do it.

Shallie...what was that?

A secret technique of our clan. I've been practicing it for a long time, but I finally managed to do it. I'm so glad...

What beautiful flowers... I hope we see amazing things like this everywhere on the eastern continent...

The Crystal Valley is just north of here.

Music: Crystal Dance

We can't get to where we need to go without passing through here. We have to go. Right?

Yep!

...Alright then, let's go.

Let's make sure to gather a lot here!

If we're going to be investigating large areas like this, we need a way to mark our movements carefully. Do you see that crystal over there?

Yeah, of course.

If you find similar objects like that, distinctive parts of the area where you can guide yourself around, you won't get lost around here. Keep an eye out for those in the future.

There are a lot of enemies around here...

It looks like the path splits off in three directions.

I never thought I would see slags like this again. There used to be a lot of them around Colseit, but I guess they've come here, too.

We're going to have to fight one. Which one do you want to fight, Shallie?

Hmm...

Crystal clash

Exciting!

This is our chance!

Yeah! We're the best!

Oh no...

What is it?

Me and Logy found Slag remains a lot like this, and we ended up having to fight it. I was...kinda responsible, though.

Ah, I remember that report... Well, at least you were successful. Still, it doesn't look dangerous at the moment. We should probably leave it alone.

Finally...looks like the end of the valley is ahead. Homura, how far from the Crystal Valley is Faav Village?

Have to. Pass. Through. Small tunnel. But close.

Great, more of these. Let's take it out.

Armor killer

I'm glad the strength of my people can help all of my friends...

I'm going to defeat this monster.

That was not difficult.

The mysterious east

Music: Red Light

Hmm, interesting...

It really does exist!

The culture doesn't seem that different from Stellard, but the atmosphere is totally distinct, even from Central...

It sure is. How does it compare to your village, Shallie?

My village is pretty small... But, this is the second time I've come to an unknown town. The world really is...

Hahaha, that's what I was going to say.

Hehe! I guess we're thinking the same thing!

Well we shouldn't just stand around! Let's go in.

Whattt!? You like saying "Barrel" too!?

Huh? Oh, yes... I just like saying "Barrel!"

Barrel!

BAR-REL!!!

Dramatic encounters

And we came all this way...

Huh?

Them. I know!

Music: Seeker's Tango

Hello hello! I'm Harry Olson, and I explore the world in search of knowledge.

And I'm Reyfer. I'm not one for bragging, but I'm a pretty adept treasure hunter.

Hello. Reyfer.

Well, if it isn't Homura. Quite a coincidence meeting in a place like this.

Reyfer. You forget. Our work. No coincidences.

What, really?

Treasure hunters don't blindly blunder into random ruins. We wouldn't last very long if we did, if you get my drift.

Only amateurs. Search random places. We study much. Before going. That's why. Always a reason. Treasure hunter appears.

That means...

Yes, you're pretty smart, you know. Have you happened to have heard of a Solle Grumman?

Ah, Solle? Yes! I know him!

We met each other during one of my great adventures from the past... Hmm, maybe this can be part of my book...

Wait, you're a writer?

Wait a minute, you don't know what a fabulous writer I am? How unfortunate. I'll have to find you some copies when we return to Stellard!

Uhm... Thanks? Are you here because Solle asked you to come?

Yeah. We came as a scouting group since we heard the route to the continent's reopening. We wanted to be first.

Wait a minute... Could you two be the people Escha was talking about...?

Yeah, she decided to go back first. It's actually quite common to send professional treasure hunters to check out ruins before an investigation. More often than not, there're hidden dangers about.

There's something great just waiting for us on this continent! Grand relics of past civilizations! The automaton worshiped here as a goddess must have a ton of lost knowledge!

Automaton as... A goddess? That's right, the people in town mentioned a goddess...

There wasn't much in the town itself, though. Kinda disappointing.

I see.

We should take a look around town, too.

Alright, sounds like a good idea.

Is this... A person??

Oh, that's an automaton.

Automaton... A doll that looks just like a human? I didn't realize you know about things like this!

I encountered a few near Stellard before, but I didn't really know much about them... Al asked for things like this, but, I don't think we can take it, huh...

Al...? Oh, Perriend's son, right? I think this is what they were calling their goddess... They'd probably get upset if we took it.

...Yeah, probably.

So...I guess we didn't find out anything.

Sure looks like it... We should get back to the ship.

Wait up, ladies!

Oh, Harry. Hello.

What is it?

Our meeting must be fate! I have some good information for you for a nominal cost!

We're actually pretty low on cash...

Don't be so tasteless, Reyfer. When it comes to turning a crisis into an opportunity, the Harry Company is the best in the business!

Anyway, let us know if you're interested. It'd really help us out. Me and Harry collect all sorts of rare items. Harry sells 'em, but I help collect 'em. Speak to him if you need something.

Gathered here are some of the rarest items of the eastern continent! Why, I bet you've never seen most of these ingredients! And my prices are very reasonable, as you can see!

Thank you, Mr. Harry.

These do look pretty interesting...

Crisis

Yes, the Dusk hasn't affected this place much yet... But I'm sure we'll find a clue to help save Lugion Village if we keep looking!

Shallie!

Huh?

Escha! What are you doing here?

Raoul sent me. He said to call you back.

What? He did??

Call us back?

There's something unusual happening with the city's water supply, and it's become a huge problem.

What?! The water supply...!

There aren't enough people around to help, so he wanted you to hurry back!!

Alright, we'll head back now!

Hey, wait for me!

The Dusk is finally showing its effects... What can we do...?

Why now...? We haven't investigated enough yet...

I know... But this issue could affect your village, too, Shallie.

...My village is already in crisis. We've just managed to get by, for now. The best way of solving both our problems and the problem in Stellard is to investigate the Dusk...

But what we really need to know is what's happening in the city. We have to find something new... Right?

...I don't know.

I hope we get back soon...

This is as fast as the ship will go. We'll get there soon enough.

Yeah... I guess...

Distance

Raoul! What happened to the water supply?

Don't worry, we've just finished implementing emergency measures.

Emergency measures?

An alchemist looked at the water supply control equipment, so, we're getting by for now.

They were just passing through. They were a bit problematic, though, so I didn't want to ask them anything...

Problematic? Um...what did this alchemist look like?

He was wearing a dark coat, glasses, had short white hair, and was tall.

Wait, could that have been...

Don't worry, it's not important right now. The point is that we've bought some time.

What should we do?

It looks like Central is finally starting their investigation, so you two should just hang out on standby for now.

Okie dokey.

We can't help that. But... Seeing as they have emergency measures, there probably wasn't a need to rush back...

...

HOO'S HEAD GOES ALL THE WAY AROUND?
Aww, poor Lotte. Raoul can be kind of a dick to her, sometimes.

Were the slag remains you found just an in-game callback to Escha&Logy, or will they have some significance?

Late in the game, that slag comes alive to attack you if you get close. It's one of the late (as in Chapter 10) super bosses that pop up in various parts of the map.

This is the part of the game where I got distracted by other stuff, so everything else will be new and exciting!

Have you said if you'll be detailing some of the late game supercrafting you'll be doing? Seeing how you made souped up items was always cool.

Sylphid

I will try my best. As far as creating super items, we're still really early in the game (the only place I think you can get halfway decent properties is from that pink Breaker slag in the Land of the Dead). The best way, in my experience, of getting the best properties is farming one of the late-game super bosses over and over again.

After that it's getting Traditional Soul (PP +50, with a cap on PP at 99), on as many synthesis ingredients as possible, and finding the right combinations for attack items. We're still a long way from super items, but once you realize how much benefit you can get out of Chain Bonuses, getting the best Effects and Properties is a breeze. You can only really exploit those with items that have 4 alchemy skill slots, which I don't have a whole lot of at the moment.

Yes, I've learned a lot.

TEO01 Oh, I remembered a tool passed down in our village, used to find lost items... Do you want to try making it?

TEO01 Yes. If you use it, you might be able to find rare ingredients or relics.

A dowsing rod... Thanks Teo. I'll give it a try.

Oh! Finding lost items! Excuse me, I'll be right back!

Found something that needs a fix.

Part XIV: The Ghostly Side of the Ship Graveyard

A serious adult?

Yes, they found an emergency fix.

That's good.

Yes. ...Although, we didn't find a way to save the village... Though the fact there was a fix for the water in this own could be a big hint for us.

What makes you say that?

If we ask the alchemist who fixed the water equipment, we might learn something useful that could help!

We might be getting ahead of ourselves.

We don't even know if there's equipment like that near Lugion Village, or if it's causing the problems.

That's true... But...

There's no use overthinking it. You need your rest, you know.

Kortes is right. You've been working nonstop since we got to Stellard.

I don't know what would happen if you came back to the village with a permanent frown on your face.

Hm... Miss Shallistera, why is your friend not here?

You mean Shallie? She said she wanted to let her mom know she came back safe first.

I see. In that case, why don't you get some rest? You must be exhausted.

I will. Good night, Teo and Kortes.

Music: Good Night

A family's burden

Shallie... Coming home so suddenly... Isn't fair... Now... You've found out...

What're you talking about? Mom! Mom...? Mom! Oh no...!

(Doctors say she just needs some rest, but I know they're not telling me the truth... I don't know what to do! Is there anyone who could help...?!)

I have no idea what kind of illness she could have... Do you know anything, Raoul?

Sorry, I don't know anything. The best I can do is introduce you to a doctor I know.

Oh no...

This might not be the fastest solution, but you could ask the chairman...

Perriend...?

Your mother used to work for him, he might know something.

But will he even listen to me?

You don't have time to ask questions like that! Get going!

Okay!

Shallotte, what's wrong? You look pale.

My mom, her name is Nady... She used to work for Perriend, and...

Nady was my superior. I know her quite well.

Really?!

What about Nady?

She collapsed today, but the doctor doesn't seem to know what's wrong...

Perriend...!

You said she collapsed?

Yes...

I see...

Do you know anything, maybe?

I did speak to her after your father's accident. She was already ill with an incurable disease at that point.

Incurable disease? My mom was sick?

An affliction of the heart. Usually she was unaffected if she avoided strain, but its progress changes everything. There's still no way of curing it.

No... Then what's going to happen to my mom?

If she's sleeping, you should just let her be until she wakes up on her own... I'll do what I can to help.

Perriend...

If anything happens, don't hesitate to let me know.

Okay. Thank you so much.

I would have liked to see her lend her talent to the Corporation one more time.

Oh, I was just thinking. Now that we've defeated the Sand Dragon, maybe our reputation will change...

... ...Yes.

Yes? That's it?

I was thinking. The Sand Dragon was just living here, right...? I feel kind of sorry for it...

Hmm, now that I think about it...

Normally, it wouldn't do anything unless it was provoked...

...That might be true, but it did attack our ship.

...Yeah. Still... Don't you feel anything about killing the dragon?

It was a fearsome opponent. I think we should be proud we defeated it.

Proud...?

Yes. As a clan of hunters, defeating a powerful beast like a dragon is an honor. Actually, there's a few clans I know of that have hunted dragons. The reason they're so rare today is because of great hunters like them. I'm proud to follow in their footsteps. But beyond that, I'm glad we got rid of something that was causing harm to people.

I guess... I think you're too happy about this... You're even using it as a mark of prestige as a hunter...

So you're saying when someone encounters a dragon, they should just let themselves get eaten?

No... But...

If you could reason with it, there would be more options. But, in this case, it was kill or be killed.

That sounds about right... If only there was another way, though...

I wonder if there really wasn't...

I can't think of anything... And honestly, there was nothing we could do. There's no point in dwelling on it.

A new day! I'm feeling good today, yeah!

(Shallie seems like she's in a really good mood... I wonder why?)

Perfect timing! I have plenty of new items, so please take a look.

Really!? Well, you do have some stuff I haven't seen before...

...Whoa! Hey, look at that!

Hey, Katla! How much is that!?

What's this? You seem interested. This doll is actually a very rare item, you know? Heh heh heh, I see... How about this much?

Fifty...thousand...Cole!? Whoa! That's way too much! It's a lot of money, but it's also true that automatons are really rare...

I guess we can't help it... I got it, we'll buy it at that price.

Shallie?! Can you really pay that?

My family has some savings... I guess I can just keep working with you to work it off... Ugh.

Wait, you're really buying it!? You saw the price, right?

I don't really want to pay that much for it, but we'll take it.

Grr... It seems I underestimated alchemists. If they're making that much money, I could have charged more...

What's that? You say something?

No, just talking to myself. Anyway, thank you for your purchase! But... Is this really okay? I'm starting to feel a little guilty... Please, take these too! It's on the house.

It is a really nice item...

Shallie, is it really okay to spend that much money on something you won't use?

Eh hehe...probably not, but maybe Albert can help me and mom in the future? He'll get all of Perriend's money some day, so...

Hm... You always have such wonderful things at your shop, Escha...

Ehehe... Really?

Oh, Linca. Welcome!

Hello. I've come to buy some things. Let's see...

Thank you very much! ...Phew.

What's wrong, Escha?

I know this is bad, but... When she looks that similar, it's hard to get used to her being different.

Looks similar...?

Yeah, like Linca back in my home town.

Oh, you're both from the same place?

No... There's just a Linca in my home city who looks the same and has the same name.

Huh? I'm sorry, I don't think I understood that. Am I just dumb...?

To be honest, I don't really understand it either.

I've heard a saying that there's always 3 people who look the same as you somewhere in the world...

Or maybe... They're twins?

Hmm... She did say she had sisters... But that shouldn't make them look THAT similar...

Ms. Linca's sisters... We should ask her next time!

It's really dark under your eyes...

It's because of what's going on... We don't have enough employees, yet the work just keeps increasing. To be honest, I feel awful.

Oh...

This might be a little out of left field... But why does government work always involve such useless procedures? I feel like just tearing it all up!

How can you joke with such a straight face...!

I'm not kidding, this is really how I feel.

That's even scarier!

That reminds me...

I understand her feelings more than ever, now.

Oh I know, Solle! Try thinking about sweets! I'm sure you'll feel a lot better!

And now I'm even more stressed out because the sweets I made didn't turn out the way I wanted! Just thinking about it makes me shake...

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to!

Take some deep breaths, Solle...

Solle. Here! Do your best. Survive!

Om... Escha made this... They're always just a little too sweet... I'll just have to clean up this paperwork to show her how it's done...

Looks like Solle cheered up.

I helped!

Actually, I had something for you two. Just a moment... Ah yes. I have good news for you. I've received a message from Central... They have high regards for your investigations.

Whoa, that's awesome!

Thanks to you, the budget allotted to our branch will be greatly increased.

That's good... It sounds like our hard work is paying off!

Central's accepted us... Doesn't that mean we're pretty amazing!?

Personally, I think they took too long to acknowledge your accomplishments.

Huh...?

They'll likely assign you more important investigations in the future. Prepare yourselves for the worst.

Could that have been...

His way of complimenting us...?

We did it!!

With an increased budget, you'll be able to retrieve more materials in the field and return them to your workshop. This budget is on a provisional basis, as long as you continue to deliver results that they approve of.

So basically, just don't get lazy?

We can do that! Let's see what Raoul is offering today...

A lot of survey teams are headed toward the Dusk Sea, but there's a number of monsters there that could make things difficult. If you could reduce their numbers, that would be a big help.

Yes, it's right here.

Oh... Sorry.

No worries. Please take your time.

Okay... No, wait, that's all for today.

Oh... That's too bad. Please come back again.

Heeey, Master Wilbell!

Oh, so you're here too.

Um... Wilbell, do you have a hard time around Ms. Rosemia?

Huh!? W-why would you say that!?

I'm sorry if I'm mistaken, but... After watching you just now...

Oh! I kind of thought so too! You seemed kind of...scared!

...Hahh. I didn't realize it was so obvious...

So we were right!?

There's nothing wrong with Rosemia herself, but... She seems a lot like the Grand Master.

Grand Master... If I recall, she was Master Wilbell's master... She's a super powerful magician, right?

Right. She looks and speaks really gently... But she's actually SUPER strict. Rosemia reminds me of her, and that makes me really nervous.

(So even Wilbell can get scared... Oh! Miruca wanted to come by the ship today! I totally forgot!) Um, Shallie, Wilbell, I'm sorry, but I have to go back to the ship now. Can you two wait here? We'll be headed to the Dusk Sea after I get back.

Sure we can. I've still got a lot to teach you, Shallie.

Alright!

...I heard about your mom, Shallie. I'm so sorry.

Thanks master. I only wish I could do more. I'm...gonna go talk to Perriend about mom. I didn't know she worked for the Corporation for so long.

Good idea. I'll be here when you're ready.

Oh, Shallie. Why are you hesitating like that?

Um... I heard that my mom worked for you. But it seems kind of hard to believe...

Nady's decision to resign was quite sudden...

Um... What was my mom like when she worked here? Was she still kind of airheaded?

S-Seriously... I mean really!?

She had the courage of a warrior, yet she was extremely attentive to detail...

Ms. Nady was the one who taught me how to work as a secretary.

R-Really...!? I-I can't even imagine...

Shallie, you should come visit more often. I'd like to hear more about how Nady is doing.

...Okay! (I guess Mr. Perriend isn't just a scary old guy...)

My village is pretty small, so there weren't many girls around my age. That's why I'm really glad to have met as many people as I did after coming here... I'm so glad you're spending time with me.

...I don't think I'm really that interesting of a person...

That's not true! I always have a good time during our talks, Miruca.

Nobody's ever said that to me before...

Really? Well... Maybe it just seemed obvious to them.

That reminds me, I tried synthesizing something the other day, but it didn't go so well... Could you take a look?

Here... The quantity here is wrong. Want to give it a try now? We have the ingredients. I'll watch.

Really? Maybe I'll take you up on that offer... Hehe, although I get nervous thinking about someone watching...

Yeah, I think so too.

I notice you're stirring a little quickly... Slow it down a little.

Yes...

And make sure you add that liquid in the right proportion...

Oh yeah... I always make so many mistakes when I'm alone... Miruca, this might take me a little while to finish. You don't need to be here for the whole thing. When I finish adding the ingredients, it will take a while for the final material to come out.

I see... Well, I'll be going back to my shop. Goodbye.

(Hm... I should ask her to come along to the Dusk Sea before I leave... And I'm making a gift for her, so I have to be extra careful. Here goes...)

Welcome... Have a seat.

Thank you! Um, this is a gift...

...Did you make these yourself?

I didn't know what else to bring...

Hm, sweets... They're all irregular shapes and sizes... But that makes it seem very heartfelt and thoughtful... Were you making these in the atelier?

Haha, yes. I was trying to make something nice for you, but wasn't sure how to make things like this with alchemy. They didn't turn out how I like, but...

...These would be really relaxing to have with tea. Thanks.

I'm glad you like them...

(Hahh... I always feel really calm and comfortable around Miruca...) Did I interrupt you?

No... I was getting pretty bored, so I probably would've run off if you hadn't come by. You always show up right before I'm about to ditch work. It's perfect.

That's good...

...Yeah.

(I'm glad I can help Miruca relax by coming here...) Miruca, would you like to come with me and Shallie to the Dusk Sea? We have a lot of hunting requests, so it would be a big help if you were there.

Of course. Um, where's Shal?

Wilbell said she had more training for Shallie, and that's when I left.

I see. Let's get going.

Music: Blurring Sand

So this expanse used to be an ocean...

...Yeah, this is weird.

...What is?

There's nothing around here.

Isn't that because of the Dusk?

That's not what I mean... I don't feel the power of spirits around here. If it used to be an ocean, I should be able to sense the power of spirits that were here... This is a strange place...

...

Well... We can worry about it later. We should just complete our assignments here.

Travel the world... That could be fun.

I want... To write a book. Something kids could read.

A book, huh... That's a pretty simple dream.

What about you?

After this journey is over, I want to reconsider my life... Hahaha...

(Maybe I should think about what I'll do after all this... Shallie asked me the same question, but I don't think I've ever really thought about it. Hm.)

Oh, hello Rose!

Are you working...?

Yes, you could say that... But I'm collecting lost items whose owners are unknown. You don't have to be so afraid.

(It's like she read my mind... What a strange person.)

I know you think my work is unusual, but isn't it sadder to have all these items left in the Dusk Sea? Their previous owners can't use them anymore, and they can be used for the living's sake. The only real difference between one who is alive and one who is dead is the fact that they have life...

Ahaha... (Whoa, does she know what I'm thinking...!?)

Those who lost their way and died, and items that lost their owners, are all equally lost in my eyes.

The people who come out here... They're mostly hunters, right?

Many people, in fact. Treasure hunters, explorers, but yes, most of the people I work with were very courageous types... ...But not all of them were the same. Some were merchants traveling between cities, others were families, others came here for research... Because of that, sometimes I find important items far more valuable than money.

I... See...

This may be a cruel land... But these items remind me that the people here have not forgotten their hearts. These items are far too priceless to sell.

(She might be strange, but... She's not a bad person...)

Were you two here for any reason?

Um, we had...some jobs we needed to complete around here. We were also looking for a ghost ship that was seen near here. Have you seen it?

No, but I feel the strong presence of the dead in this area. I would not be surprised if it was around. Now then, I'm sure we'll meet again. Farewell.

I'm not even sure where we are, but...

I can feel it. The ghost ship has to be close to here.

We're already really far from Stellard or the eastern continent. I'm not taking this ship much farther. If the ghost ship is there, fine, but just so we're clear.

I know. My source said the ship was around here. If it's not, well, I'll keep looking.

Music: Within the Feelings Left Behind

Whoa, what's with this place?

Can feel. Strong monsters around.

How curious. This region doesn't seem nearly as affected by the Dusk as I would have thought. This could be very interesting.

The ghost ship... I... I finally found it...!

You did it, Jurie!

It really seems like a place where you'd find ghosts...

It's called a "ghost ship", so it would be weirder if there weren't any. ...Anyway, let's go.

Okay!

With how obviously old this place is, the wood is bound to be weak in places. Everyone, be extra careful here, and watch for the slags. They seem to have infested this ruin, as well.

There are stairs in this back, and considering the size, this might have been the place where they ate meals. Fascinating...

Does something about that door over there feel...odd to anyone?

Always. Danger. For treasure hunters. Must be. Brave.

I agree with Homura, but something definitely feels unusual about that door. Let's be very careful, and keep your eyes open, everyone.

Huh...? I feel like I've been through here before...

No, we've definitely been here before. Wilbell, do you have any ideas?

I'm familiar with a lot of witch magic, but this doesn't feel like that at all. I wouldn't know what that was.

Hm...why don't we try going back through the door we just came out of?

Could this be where the captain lived?

Looks like you were right, Shallie. Still, it doesn't look like we can go deeper into the ship without passing through that door. I wonder how...?

Jurie, didn't your book mention something about a light and truth?

Yeah, it did... Well, whatever it is, we don't have it. There's nothing more we can do here for now. Let's head back.

You're taking all my business! My sales have been terrible! You have to do something!

Oh, how unfortunate that you're trying to blame your own misfortunes on me.

That's because it's your fault! If we both sell the same things in the same city, then business will drop for both of us!

If we sell the same things in the same way, then we should have the same sales numbers. This just means that I'm selling better merchandise for a better price. I think this just illustrates the difference in skill between us.

Rrrgh... You're selling things way too cheap! This...and this! These normally sell for double what you're asking!

Oh dear... What's wrong with selling good quality items for a reasonable price? It's far better than selling junk for a high price.

Th-That's...!

I don't think Katla can win this...

She can't really argue against that...

And who was the one saved by those unscrupulous collectors again? I recall discovering countless people just like a certain someone collapsed in the desert... I also recall treating them and saving their lives.

I-I...! Rrrgh... I'll get your customers some day! You'll regret this!

I look forward to the challenge. Please come back again.

(Ms. Rosemia... Seemed to be having fun...)

(Perriend sent me that letter...) Shallie, can I catch up with you later? My mom wanted me to do some work around the house.

Oh, yes, see you later!

(A knock?) Yes? ...Who could it be? Oh, Ms. Linca. What is it?

I apologize for coming by so suddenly, but would it be possible for you to come to the Corporation right now?

Huh? That's okay, but... (Wh-What could it be? Could this be about my mom...?)

I apologize for calling you here so suddenly.

N-No, it's okay!

How's Nady doing?

Um, she kind of spaces out a lot, but she's always taking care of me... Even though I want her to rest.

So she starts working if you leave her alone?

Yeah, that's right! ...Oh, sorry for shouting...!

Don't worry about such manners. Young people should be energetic.

There's something the chairman wished to tell you, Ms. Shallotte.

Huh? What's that...?

Your father was an alchemist who came here from another city...

...So I've heard.

I was quite irritated when he took Nady from me, and brought her to the lower city. ...That may be the reason I came to dislike the lower city... How childish of me. But that also shows just how much I relied on her as a subordinate.

I see...

When Nady decided to resign, I was still a relative novice, and I felt quite helpless as a result.

After you were born, I asked Nady a number of times if she would return, but she always refused. ...She said that she had already made her decision to leave.

Mom...

Shallie, does Nady seem happy?

...Then she must be happy.

C'mon, Mr. Perriend! That's enough talk! We still have no idea what could happen with her, she might be fine! She hasn't collapsed again!

...That's true.

...Yes, you're right. I was simply feeling nostalgic, and a little gloomy. If it's okay with you, would you mind talking like this once in a while? I'd like to look towards the future.

Huh? Of course! No problem!

Hey, you're accepting that request? I'll explain it for you. This request is for gathering Slag coins. They want quite a few of them.

Slag coins...

I'm not sure if you're aware, but a long time ago, they were used as currency around here. Just like it sounds, they're made from Slag fragments. There's actually a fair amount of work put into the details. Still... Not many people know about them. Nobody uses them, either. I don't know why someone wants them... Anyway, I'm counting on you. Try not to let down the client.

Okay, I'll do my best! Wait...are these Slag Coins?

You had them already? Jeez, I wonder why YOU'RE collecting them. Maybe they're coming back? Anyway, I'll be sure to let the client know. Nice work.

Teo and Kortes both went off somewhere, so it's kind of boring without anyone to talk to...

Maybe I should go see Shallie? But, hmm, there was that time before...

Hello, Shallie!

Today at home, my mom was all like...

...Oh, hello Miruca.

Huh? Miruca?

Something like that happened before... Hmm, what should I do...

What are you worrying about, Shallie?

Oh, hello, Kortes. Well, uh... Well, there was this one time I went to go talk to Shallie, but Miruca was there, too, and her expression was kind of...

...

What should I do?

...Why don't all three of you just meet up?

But then who should I go to first? Hmm, I don't know...

Jeez, that's all you're worrying about? If you're going to go, just go! Go!!

O-okay!

Buying the automaton for 50,000 Cole doesn't affect anything else in the game, other than a couple more scenes where Katla first offers it for 20,000 Cole, and if you turn her down, eventually you'll get an event where Katla mentions that a wealthy customer buyer purchased it, and, unsurprisingly, that customer is Albert (it's just like the alchemy book Katla was hocking for a ridiculous price in Escha & Logy where Harry would eventually buy it if you didn't take Katla up on her previous offers). There's also an automaton at the Crystal Field that I just BARELY missed as Stera (you have to get super close to it, but to be fair, it is marked with a white dot on the mini-map). Why are the automatons special? That's for quite a bit later (we're talking about 4-5 updates from now).

Also, one more note before bed time for me, Wilbell's special attack is the only special attack that, even when she crosses over the level 30 lines, she won't get. Why? She gets her Super Attack from a plot event that I should be getting to within 3 updates or so (if I'm remembering the sequence of events right).

There are also a bunch of scenes that happened before the end of Chapter 6, but had to be cut in the interests of space limitations. Luckily Chapter 7's plot events are fairly short and shouldn't take up too much space so I can fit those in next time.

The automatons always remind me of an old manga that had a pair of siblings with two tone eyes. Can't remember the exact name of it, but it had the same kind of long haired, flowy dressed people in it.

I'm interested to find out what Miruca's feelings are towards Stera exactly. At first I thought she was jealous that the Shallie's got on well together, but she seems to like Stera so maybe she just wishes she could be bffs with Stera? I should really play the game myself but uni has been so busy lately and it's only going to get busier. I really appreciate your comments on the gameplay mechanics though, it helps me understand the game a bit better.

Oh cool, I was wondering since I was way too poor to buy it while I was playing. Glad that it's not some kind of permanently missable thing.

Also you missed a tag in the update:

Ahaha... (Whoa, does she know what I'm thinking...!?)[/i]

What? It seemed like
a good idea at the time.

Sounds like Rozen Maiden to me.

Seeing as the automatons are apparently welded to the ground, moving them might be a baaaaaaaaaaad idea.

Just cut around them and replant like a flower, problem solved.
