I'm using Secret Methods to trick Netflix into thinking I'm in the US, but I'm not sure if it's working. Can one of you Americans tell me if the show about a cop turned cabbie, Hack, is still on there? I'd ask in TVIV but I didn't find a thread about Netflix.

Nope. Hackers is still there though. Maybe you should watch that and learn how to hack the planet better.

For real. Movies "good" enough that a significant number of straight people want to see them are usually made by straight people for straight people, and they're almost always bullshit gay tragedies. Booooriiiiing.

Master of None is better than I expected. The first episode was rough, but it gets much better. Not a lot of laugh out loud moments (aside from one H. Jon Benjamin moment where I may have woken my wife up), but solid. I watched 8 episodes last night.

Netflix suggested I watch that new Aziz Ansari show. Is it anything like his stand-up routines? If so, I'm gonna give it a pass.Lurdiak posted:I'm using Secret Methods to trick Netflix into thinking I'm in the US, but I'm not sure if it's working. As far as I know that one's only available in the US.

It covers some of the same topics like dating in the modern world, and his persona in the show is closer to that of his later standup than it is to his character in Parks and Recreation. I feel like Master of None has interesting things to say sometimes, but is a little on the nose about it, and the acting from most of the main cast just seems off.

I finally got around to watching Reality and really liked it. It's maybe my favorite of all Dupieux's movies. If you don't already like his stuff it's not going to change your mind, but if you do you're in for a treat, because it's basically his 8 1/2.

I can recommend Last Shift if you're looking for a decent horror movie. Don't let the corny Netflix placard fool you. It doesn't do anything particularly original, but it's reasonably well-executed. The plot is almost elegantly simple and it has this Assault on Precinct 13 vibe that really works. Watch it alone in the dark at 3 in the morning for maximum effect.

I watched The Beast because of this thread, and I don't know how I feel. I didn't hate it, didn't like it. I watched part of Immoral Tales to see if I would enjoy the director's other work. I only watched the first story, and while I liked it, I'm confused as to why this director is held in such a high regard? He's like a Ken Russell movie that goes straight to the weird rape.

Just watched Human Centipede 3. I'm still not totally sure how I feel about it. About the one good thing I can say about it is that it feels like Tom Six made exactly the movie he wanted to make. Hats off to him for sticking to his vision I guess. It's an ok choice for a movie to throw on if you just want to watch a completely trash movie with some interesting gore that doesn't take itself too seriously. I don't recommend watching it sober, or at all in fact.

Seconding The Last Shift recommendation. Genuinely creepy film and contrary to the other guys, I thought the ending was effective and appropriate, if predictable.

It's complete trash, but it's pretty fun trash compared to the joyless slog that was 2. It's pretty much entirely comedy and even the gore is more laughably absurd than cringe inducing. It's a decent note for this terrible series to end on all things considered. Honestly, it's worth a watch if you like bad movies just for how earnestly and unabashedly awful it is.

coyo7e posted:I tried watching Last Shift but got bored and turned it off about a third through, pretty sure I know where it was going and didn't want to spend another hour to get there. Probably doesn't help that I watched that Scottish flick about the lady cop the other night, and it was way more memorable. Let us Prey, right? I'll probably check that out soon so I'm glad to hear it's a good watch. While I did appreciate that the effects team from The Thing prequel actually got to showcase their talents for Harbinger Down, what captivated me about the original The Thing was the tension and paranoia that pervades every aspect of the film and informs every action the characters take. Those aspects seemed to either be totally absent or artificially inserted into the plot through the introduction of a fully equipped Soviet sleeper agent... on an American crabbing vessel. It is an excellent creature feature though and that along with the setting made me feel right at home.

There were some cool ideas in Let Us Prey, like the insane precinct captain who's right on the edge of his final psychotic break but the acting, writing, and pacing of the movie were not good at all. Not a lot happens for most of the movie and then when poo poo does happen the payoff isn't worth the wait.

Yes, that one scene actually was really cool and hammy and fun and it almost made the movie worth it for me. Now watch The Traveler. The dark, brooding, imposing stranger, played by Val Kilmer, wears a thick, black turtleneck to hide his thick, flappy, turkeyneck. I miss handsome Val.

Rageaholic Monkey posted:Really? Because I found it to be a joyless slog in comparison to 2. You found 2 less terrible than 3? At least 3 tried to have some fun with it even if it failed pretty miserably. 2 is a bit more technically competent in that it isn't filmed like some lovely soap opera but that's about the single good point I can think of in that depressing, boring pile of poo poo. I got at least a couple of amused chuckles out of how bizzare 3 could get with it's shotgun approach to offensive content.
